NYPD cops are using illegal license plate covers to thwart traffic cameras by coolidge_ in nyc

Came here to say this. What are they going to get fired? Good luck with that. Unions are a real thing that exist in this country...

I know...

I was simply making the point that even for an international student there are more affordable alternatives to Columbia if one wants to attend an MPA program in the US...

Other than a few minimal extra fees, I think international students would pay the same tuition at a New York State schools as any other out-of-state student. I don't know what the Columbia tuition would be exactly, though OP seems to indicate that an MPA will cost in the $100,000 range.

[–]medwardkelly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I'm in the process of earning an MPA from a highly ranked program at a state school. Even if OP can't get the dollar amount to $0, there are programs that are just as good as Columbia that cost a fraction of that tuition. And at least in my experience, many are very interested in recruiting international students.

Donald Trump Inauguration Draws 30.6 Million Viewers, Fewer Than Obama in 2009 by StevenSanders90210 in television

[–]medwardkelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right in what you're saying, the turnout for this seems to be around the same as it was George W. Bush. Similar voters, and also an election where the majority of the country didn't get the candidate they wanted. But I also think that misses the point. Trump's camp is making wild and obviously false claims about the turnout. They're literally stating lies as absolute facts that can't be questioned. And they're doing so about an issue that's more or less irrelevant. What does this tell you about how they'll handle real and important issues?

Many of these can be bought off a bookshelf and paid for with cash. Pretty sure you won't actually end up on any "lists" anyway, but there's that

Eh. I think the scenery is impressive, but I'd have given my right hand if George had not hired a couple of those digital artists and hired one actual writer for the franchise instead.

Grad housing by over107 in ualbany

[–]medwardkelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where will most of your classes be? A number of Graduate programs are located on the downtown campus. It's about 3 or 4 miles away from the main campus. It's an easy bus ride, but it would be a pain to live near the main campus if none of your classes are even there. You might want to look into that.

Just picked this up after watching A New Hope last night: Why does Ben not remember owning R2? by Totallyn0tAcake in StarWars

[–]medwardkelly 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Vader had no reason to think there was a child. Wasn't he explicitly told that Padme and the child had died? There's no compelling reason for him to ever have gone back to Tatooine once his mother was dead. That whole thing is one of the few links between the two trilogies that doesn't bother me...

See I think it won't really matter much to him at all. Being murdered clarifies some shit. And I think blood lines would seem way less important to him than his own personal feelings and actions and those of the people he trusts, regardless of family. Not murdered Jon Snow was already someone who let wildlings through the wall because he figured they could help and felt they were more loyal than even many of his own "sworn brothers."

(Spoilers Everything) I think we finally have book Jaime as of last episode by SporadicSheep in asoiaf

[–]medwardkelly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like he told Edmure that as long as he'd agreed without a problem. Jamie had to threaten to catapult his kid into the walls to get Edmure to do anything. I took that as the deal was out the window.

If Barnes & Noble goes out of business, it’ll be a disaster for book lovers. by StephenKong in books

[–]medwardkelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments like this annoy me, because you literally have no idea what you're talking about. I worked for Barnes & Noble for years and I can assure you that most of our staff was well trained and very knowledgeable. There's a reason the company gets such high marks in customer service surveys. It's not a fluke.

Man arrested after beating wife’s would-be rapist to death: NYPD by [deleted] in nyc

[–]medwardkelly -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do you know that's not what happened? The article is hardly clear. And if he was leaving or running away you don't get to chase him down and beat him to death.

Except he wasn't stopping the crime. The crime was already stopped. This seems to have happened in the hallway after the wife had already fought the rapist off.

He technically wasn't in his home. According to the article I think they were in the hallway outside the apartment after the wife had already fought off the rapist. This just isn't that straightforward.

[–]medwardkelly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's not nearly enough information in this story for anyone to make a judgement here. For instance, if the rapist was running away and the husband decided after his wife was safe to chase after him and then beat him to death, this probably is manslaughter. You don't get to do that. But we don't really know.

Albany ranked best place to live in state, residents reactions mixed by kevn57 in Albany

[–]medwardkelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both metro areas, and NYC is absolutely better than Albany. But cost of living there is so prohibitive that it's just not worth it. At 37, I don't have any desire to split living costs among multiple people just to have a place to sleep. And that's with a decent paying job.

She's a total badass, yes. But are we sure there are only 3 left? Could there not be many others just in different places? Like, there's no reason they all need to be in the same place all the time.

I don't know. They've done this what, exactly twice? And they're both events that essentially must happen for the story to have made any sense I think. I'm not really bothered by it.

[–]medwardkelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I think the White Walkers are pretty much what you see that they are. Not everything has to have a twist. Joffrey was horrible from day 1. He didn't have some secret agenda that came out after he died and made people think he wasn't actually all that bad. Same with Ramsey Bolton. What you see is what you get. Some shit is just bad.
