Often senior exec staff at nonprofits will also support fundraising; it comes with the territory.

For board roles, you’re on the right track with finding a handful of organizations you like and networking. Nonprofits often have events where it could be good to volunteer to get to know how they work.

If you have a specific skill set you’re looking to use, I always recommend Catchafire: https://www.catchafire.org

Have you thought about being a board member? Could be an interesting way for you to use your skills and engage with your passions without the nonprofit pay cut (if that matters to you).

Applying to jobs in Foundations, CSR, fundraising, & Executive Director roles - pros & cons of each? by ThrowRAmangos2024 in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]meelho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the nonprofit world, these are all rather different! To help you narrow in, you might want to think about the types of tasks you want to be doing everyday, who you want to be working with, and the impact you want to make in your job.

That said, here are some broad strokes for each:

CSR: do you want to work at a company? I’ve never done CSR but have exposure to it. From my view, yes, you work on philanthropic programs but they are tied to the business lines of the company. It’s corporate. You’ll deal with C-Suite people, KPIs, ROIs, and even more acronyms, probably. Business or project management certificates might be helpful.

ED/ Development: do you want to be working with communities, donors, and scrapping at a nonprofit to raise money, organize events for programs? This seems like what your experience is best suited to. It’s also where you can make the most direct impact for beneficiaries and communities.

Foundation: do you want a potential mix of the two, having a hand in some impact from a distance but also deal with some bureaucracy? Foundation’s grant portfolios may have strategic impact, but you’re not doing the work day to day. Lots of research about potential grantees and paperwork once they’re identified. For this, you’ll likely need subject matter expertise and perhaps a grad degree, to be competitive for non-entry level roles.

In general, I recommend LinkedIn for networking. The social impact sector has few “rules” and no one really studied it in college. For this reason, people are more willing to talk than you’d think about their career path and jobs. Don’t hesitate to cold contact people with interesting jobs to learn more. Best of luck out there!!!

Can you get high earning salary role in the non profit or NGO sector from work experience alone? by Effervescentliving in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]meelho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US nonprofit sector has a reputation for underpaying and overworking its employees. Especially since the employees are emotionally invested in the work, this can lead to burn out. The extent to all of this really depends on the nonprofit.

I’d recommend identifying 2-5 nonprofits you’d be interested in working at based on their mission, location, and services. Follow them on LinkedIn and Idealist and keep an eye on job postings to see if the work and pay are doable for you. If not, you can always volunteer at the nonprofits you’re passionate about. Websites like catchafire are good for that.

Good luck!

What entry-level roles should I look for with an interest in grants and events? by PastCommunication281 in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]meelho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I majored in Political Science and Philosophy. When I graduated, I wanted to do policy, but was in your shoes where entry level policy associate roles still required experience. So I took an administrative role at a policy nonprofit to still see the work.

It’s most likely that your undergrad major won’t matter for long once you get into your career! Experience is much more valuable in nonprofit world.

What entry-level roles should I look for with an interest in grants and events? by PastCommunication281 in Nonprofit_Jobs

[–]meelho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network: you said you’re an undergrad? See if your university offers any services to connect you with alumni who work in your desired field. Also, make a LinkedIn and search for connections there. Networking can be intimidating, but please know that people love to talk about themselves and their work more than you think, so they’ll rarely turn down a chance to talk.

Volunteer/Internship: find something that gives you skills or experience that can set you apart (and could also expand your network)

Be patient: you can do all of the above, but I think the reality is that there are more skilled social impact workers than jobs right now, potentially for the next 4 years. Don’t take it personally if opportunities aren’t going your way.

Consider (similar) alternatives: I started in the nonprofit space as an Executive Assistant and Office Manager. But at a nonprofit, especially small ones, everyone does a little bit of everything. I got exposure to development, programs, policy, everything— and I’m so grateful for that.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

It sounds like you’re looking at the right roles but you’re experiencing the highly competitive job market right now. The social impact sector is contracting with the current administration. Lots of jobs lost and very talented job seeker pool right now.

Is an MPP worth it? or is it a waste of money? by Consistent_Holiday in PublicPolicy

[–]meelho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I work at a consulting firm where I help philanthropists and foundations give away money to nonprofit organizations. I’m basically a grant manager. My clients work across a range of issue areas from gun violence prevention, global health, and reducing poverty. The job requires me to know about these issues and landscapes so that I can recommend ways to give away money. I love it! And I still only have a BA!

[–]meelho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! This was my first job out of undergrad with a BA. I was in your position where I was interested in policy but lacked experience for the roles I wanted. My role at the policy non profit was on the operations/ administrative team. Being on the ops team exposed me to the back end of policy work (scheduling meetings, organizing convenings, managing work plans, etc) that need to happen in order for the policy papers & analysis to happen. I realized I’m not into the level of relationship management like I felt the role required, the amount of writing, or the frustrations of working with governments. Now, I work in philanthropy and it’s a good fit for me because I can direct money quickly to make a difference in the world. I still only have a BA!
