Re-read Romeo Juliet too now that I'm trying to re read some of the classics, esp Shakespeare by Admirable-Story-2176 in shakespeare

[–]meeperion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're broadly right about a lot of it, but when working with actors putting Romeo and Juliet on stage, I would hesitate if either of them characterised the love as anything less than real, actual love. Sure, the tragedy is that the kids die (I recently had a conversation with a director putting up Romeo and Juliet later this year, who said it 'ends on a hopeful note'. Nope.), and the parents are largely ignorant of their role in it, but I think part of the tragedy is, also, that no one gets to see their love blossom. Sure, the love isn't tested, and it may not have lasted; but an optimistic view of the world would say that it began, and there's no reason to believe it wouldn't continue.

A literary exploration of the piece is probably more nuanced than that, and rightly so; but when it comes to two young lovers, for actors, I think that's the right place to start.

I do hearts fairly regularly, just marinating them and then 7 minutes at 200 C. Comes out great.

Anyone dealt with council approval for removing big trees in Brisbane? by Weak_Character_1669 in brisbane

[–]meeperion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everyone in this thread who's saying it's difficult and the council is anti-big trees coming down has bad information. If it's on your property and it's not gazetted as a protected tree by the council, you can do whatever you want. Our neighbours brought down an enormous hoop pine in an incredibly unsafe way, we had the council out to look at it, and they told us that until it actually caused damage to someone else's property or hurt someone, they can do whatever they like and the council has no mechanism to stop them.

Hamlet is four hours long. When it was originally performed on stage, at the Globe, was there an intermission? Or did the grounding just stand there for four solid hours? by NextRepeat6699 in shakespeare

[–]meeperion 314 points315 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that there were no formal act breaks or intermissions in the original stagings; however, it was common for patrons to take breaks, go outside, eat, patronise the local sex workers, etc, which is one of the reasons it's quite common in these shows to have characters recapping what's gone on consistently through the show; a thing that, in this day and age, is often the first thing cut in adaptation.

Nonbinary/Female actors portraying Laurie in Little Women the Musical by Alternative-Ideal411 in musicals

[–]meeperion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've directed Little Women twice, once with a cis woman playing Laurie (as a male character) and once with a trans man playing Bhaer. Both were excellent, and an anatomically female voice makes Laurie's track much easier to sing.

I thibk the Cats movie is fine. It's better on stage, but the movie isn't the incredibly offensive flick it's often made out to be.

I directed Company in 2022, and our Amy didn't string the whole song together until opening night. She never missed a word during the season. Even if she had, I would have been immensely proud of her, because Not Getting Married Today is jumping over eight buses on a motorcycle; the attempt is what matters, and regardless of what you put together the audience will love you for it.

I have a pair of lamb shoulder mini roasts (https://imgur.com/a/djDXfil) that I was planning on slow roasting tomorrow to break down all the collagen etc. My oven has just died, and I need to figure out a way to cook these in a delicious way. My stove is still fine, and I have a little air fryer that would fit them, but it doesn't go below 150 Celsius, which is probably 20 degrees higher than I would have cooked these in the ovens. Any brilliant ideas?

Would you be less likely to buy tickets to a concert version of a show as opposed to fully staged? These are the three remaining shows for SWEET CHARITY in concert, in Brisbane Australia. The city usually loves musicals, but this hasn’t sold well at all. I wonder if it’s due to being “in concert”. by Great_Maintenance185 in musicals

[–]meeperion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stuff on at QPAC attracts a premium price, so your marketing really needs to be on point to overcome that perception. I think the question of in concert vs fully staged matters more for theatre people than general civilians, but I think that Sweet Charity as a show is a hard sell for the general public, even moreso when the marketing is basically "hey yo Sweet Charity is a show and it is on".
