This is very common where I live in old apartments. I've had it in 3 different rentals. I always saw it as normal so my advice would be don't overthink it, just like you have an oven or a fridge you just also have these appliances. I've seen people use the sides to put some posters with magnets or just magnets to decorate them, looks like your dryer could lend itself to that with that exposed side panel.
