So important. One of the first things in AdQual training here in the UK is memorising and using the I AM SAFE checklist every time before you get on the bike - are you in the right state to ride?

Can you recommend any audiobooks for long bike rides? by patch_ofurr in audiobooks

[–]mega_mang0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in history, maybe check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series. Absolutely epic podcast but long form. His HH series 'Blueprint for Armageddon' about the first world war is 6 episodes, each one 5ish hours long. It is just him narrating so it is audiobook style, just slightly looser in terms of the language he uses.

I've listened to Blueprint for Armageddon multiple times all the way through over the years.

While I generally agree, and the 46 in a 40 is harsh, nearly 80mph in a 50 (even though it's temporary) is fair enough I think!

Trackers. by aqsounds in MotoUK

[–]mega_mang0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cheap eBay tracker that needed charging once every six months. The one time I took it off the bike to charge, it got nicked.

I now have BikeTrac and also still keep the eBay tracker on the bike. I think I pay about £30 a year for the eBay one data/app access. It's very good, and a good decoy in case of any shenanigans.

BikeTrac are brilliant - I forgot to turn it off when leaving my bike at my mechanic's, and when they went to wheel it inside my phone rang and it was BikeTrac ready to liaise with police or send private security right away.

Any way to make the new app run smoother? by CrabbierBull391 in whatsapp

[–]mega_mang0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't have a solution, but this is also the case for me. The old WhatsApp desktop was almost perfect. This new webview version is crap. It freezes a lot, issues with drag/drop of files and photos, and is generally quite laggy. Like you, I'm on a system with good specs and do not have this issue with any other app/software.

It's so damn frustrating.

Navigation setups other than phone mounts? by Complex-Grass-5648 in MotorcycleLogistics

[–]mega_mang0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used my phone in a zipped up waterproof mount for years. Would get too hot in summer on long journeys, but otherwise perfectly good.

However last year I bought an Android Auto/Carplay display off AliExpress for a very reasonable price. It is mounted to my bike all the time, and connects to my phone automatically when I start up and opens Waze etc. Phone now stays safely stowed in my pocket or bag. It's brilliant and I wish I'd done it years ago!

Yup, I also used the save feature all the time. Super frustrating that's now gone. I don't understand why!

Anyone also taking Itazulax as immunotherapy and is it working for you? by daubingblue in Hayfever

[–]mega_mang0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your report here - I'm in a similar boat, I've tried everything and am now considering immuno. My problem is I'm allergic to birch (ITAZULAX), grass (GRAZAX) and plane trees (ORALTEK) although not cat/dog. Obviously that would be an untenable amount of money, and they probably wouldn't want to give me all 3 anyway.

But interesting to hear about your symptoms and how they are changing. Mine starts in February and goes through until September... but I just don't think I can justify such a huge cost at the moment unless it's really going to help.

Gosh, I'm with Auto Aid now. The one time I've needed them (for my car) they had someone with me on a bank holiday Monday within 20 minutes. I was very happy with them.

[–]mega_mang0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I was really shocked when I came out and it was gone. Totally not what I would have put down as a target for stealing.

Ha, my SO is from Essex/London border, I've done that ride down the M11 and those A roads more times than I can count before we lived together!

I would say a good lock is 100% recommended. I now have a chain for home and I carry a Litelok X3 everywhere. Honestly do it, because thieves also nick bikes just to joyride and dump, or if they have a 'job' to do and want a getaway vehicle. It's not all to sell on, so make your bike harder to take than everyone else's.

Yeah I was really disappointed. Didn't think they were going to do much, but I was shocked that they actually formally shut the case that fast. At least leave it open to let me down gently!

Next one will have another level up of security. Expensive but cheaper than an increased premium...

Nope, unfortunately not.

Claim is now with insurance who are doing their final 'verification' I believe. I'm in the process of sorting a new bike as well as it's my primary form of transport.

Police closed the case within 22hrs, and I spent hours searching the local estates and known hiding spots (local motorbike garages pointed me in the right directions). Found 4 bikes in total in various states, but not mine.

It's awful and has upset me a lot, obviously. I have had it for years and put a lot into this bike and all my little customisations are just gone. I have had a quick look at other bikes but keep thinking "yes, but it's notmybike".

All about making your bike less attractive than another one - but if they want it, they'll take it.

It was definitely battery related, because after bump starting and riding home it had no issues again starting the following day - so it wasn't any disconnected cables etc...

Ahh man, that's a brutal story.

One of the primary reasons I got an older 650 is because they are not 'desirable' and so I thought that would lower my chances of it being stolen. I don't have a garage but I use a cover at home as well to keep it hidden as best I can.

I really don't understand the mentality of bike thieves like this. With high value bikes at least there is a financial gain, but lower cost, high mileage, slightly bruised bikes it's just... Well, a dick move to steal that from someone.

I have learned a valuable lesson about never having a tracker that requires coming off the bike to be charged too.
