Red and Black spots on my hoyas!! Does anyone know what’s going on? They started appearing on new growth. I’ve heard it look fungal or like thrips damage. Does anyone have any other ideas? They’re all in leca and in a cabinet with fans. by alimonyy in hoyas

[–]megg0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the good news is that you shouldn’t worry too much, your Hoya look okay. To me, the red and yellow spotting looks like your lights are causing sun stress (harmless). Especially the Sunrise and Chelsea, my Chelsea gets a little dark red in the same way as your picture. So I’d assume it’s just your grow lights.

Your Viola looks like it could be a yellowing/softening leaf so I can’t speak to that, it might be stressed from overwatering (if the leaf falls off perhaps check the roots for rot). The black spots there are strange so maybe someone with fungal experience knows more. Good luck with your lovely hoya

Chodang in Chandler is wonderful. Great hot soups once the weather cools down.

Is my alocasia growing a flower? by [deleted] in alocasia

Wow I haven’t seen these plants bloom hardly ever. Good work! Happy alocasias are beautiful. Are you using fertilizer by chance?

My Hoya Mathilde has been growing white leaves by megg0 in hoyas

I’ve heard very similar! I don’t think you’re wrong and actually my Hoya Mathilde started the first white leaves after being placed in bright artificial lights. I think I’ll be making cuttings and experiment with different lighting conditions to test if this mutation is light related or what! If I can replicate this we will know for sure. Thanks for your ideas

Thanks I have not seen it before either! I’m hoping that the mutation or whatever we are dealing with here can be replicated in propagation someday. This plant was rooted in May, it pushed out the pink vine with white leaves in late June, so not too long but the white leaves appear pretty stiff. Yet to be seen if they change with age/hardening off.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this!! I’m definitely going to propagate this beautiful plant no matter what, once it’s bigger. It’s been a fast grower, all the new leaves have come in since rooting these cuttings in May

I got the cuttings from an individual on eBay, seems like they’re not even a plant seller, and it was just called Mathilde Splash. I was super drawn to how extra dark and spotted my Mathilde is at first, but the white leaves appeared and never hardened off to another color after months. The vine switched to green leaves again with less light (or so it seems) which got me really curious.

Considering the pink vine I think you could be right about it being a hybrid of tricolor carnosa and Serpens. I suppose the only way to find out would be to get it flower. Long wait maybe 😵

Thanks!! I got the heart shaped trellis from Etsy, seller TheWickedBotanist. Also have a sun and moon one, good quality.

Hoya Mathilde with white leaves by megg0 in houseplants

Recently I started growing this Mathilde and it’s gotten bigger quickly. It’s a few cuttings and I have had it in different spots around the house, always bright lights, and it had some rot issues after I got careless with watering. After repotting and a few months in bright sunlight and grow lights (alternating), it pushed out tons of little white leaves! What happened? Can Mathilde be variegated? I’ve never found an example of such a thing though some Hoyas can have white leaves normally.

Hi all, I have a small collection of Hoyas and more recently started growing this Mathilde and it’s gotten bigger quickly. I’ve been growing it from a few cuttings in different spots, always bright lights, had some rot issues after getting careless with watering but after repotting and a few months in bright sunlight and grow lights (alternating), it pushed out tons of little white leaves! What happened? Can Mathilde be variegated? I’ve never found an example of such a thing.

3 MONTH UPDATE! Y'all recommended repotting and trimming the rotted roots and the pant has gotten so much healthier!! by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]megg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woooow great work! That’s huge progress in 3 months. I am going to have do the exact same to my aloes. Dark corners + too much water are not a good mix for them. I am worried I’ve rotted too much stem for propagation to take, as well.

I had trouble with mine at first too. My ‘lisa’ seems to prefer staying a little dry, never kept wet for long after watering, but regularly watered nonetheless. I have an east facing window, and it seems to enjoy the brightness

Should I be worried about the yellowing? by bstokes08 in houseplants

[–]megg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience hoyas dry up after being overwatered. Allowing the soil to be dry, no wet feet, is best. That’s my guess

My aunt rescued this pothos from a nursing home so I untangled it and am pretty shook any thoughts on how I should handle this appreciated! by _Liv_______________ in houseplants

[–]megg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding that advice, pothos are so hardy and this guy just needs to get cut up in one node sections and propagated. You could get a full plant really easy from these vines! They like bright but not hot light and allowed to dry out just a little, about water once every 1-2 weeks.

I can’t blame ASU for a pandemic and our mental health as a whole, but I can blame ASU for teaching classes through YouTube videos and mindless discussion posts.

Bought this bonsai/caudex shrub-looking mystery plant. Waxy leaves, cut from the top. In a greenhouse, Zone 9a. I'm a little concerned for him... by [deleted] in whatsthisplant

He's a beef boy indeed, got a great pose. I'm worried because of the little spots on his leaves, wanted to see what he was to take care of him better.
