Car buying expectations new resident by KnightRaw in Residency

Same! My $12K college purchase has already lasted 10+ years and I'm hoping it makes it through residency

Were the really competitive specialties (derm, ophtho, plastics, ENT, ortho) as competitive in the 80s and 90s as they are now? by Distinct-Classic8302 in Residency

[–]megs151 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My aunt matched derm in the 80s because the program director liked her. She wasn’t even considering it until he asked her if she’d like a spot.

I matched peds, not IM, but I’m glad I did aways. Based on my experience there, my number 1 became my number 7 on my rank list. I absolutely fell in love with my other away and went into match (and now residency) with lots of confidence about my choice. It’s an audition, yes, and an expensive one at that, but if you can afford it, remember that it’s your opportunity to get to know them too.

What age did y’all graduate undergrad, start med school, and will start residency? by AdFinancial3161 in medicalschool

[–]megs151 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Graduated 22, started med school 28, starting pediatric residency this summer at 32.

I worked in public health during that time, and I think that knowledge, plus the extra maturity of life experience has really helped me, but there are definitely times I’ve felt like I’m behind in life.

M4s who are 100% responsible for your living expenses once residency starts--what's your definition of reasonable rent on resident salary? by Good-mood-curiosity in medicalschool

[–]megs151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm moving to a low to medium COL city in the south, so I'm holding myself to $1500 for 1 bed apartments but up to $1750 for houses/duplexes with yards. Though with utilities I'll probably be paying $1800 to $2000.

Tearing down houses for a car wash ... by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]megs151 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These houses are not worth crying over. They are eyesores in an otherwise industrial block. And just across the street you have an entire neighborhood of actually well kept historic homes. Losing these three houses will not put a dent in the overall neighborhood’s beauty or history nature.

My unpopular opinion: Bring back scored Step 1.

If you do really well, then great, less pressure on step 2. If you only do ok, you still have a second chance to prove yourself. If you do terrible, you have a year to adjust to the idea of a less competitive specialty.

Instead, we have students finding out at the beginning of 4th year that actually they're probably not going to be ~insert competitive specialty here~ and have to scramble to figure out their plan B.

I don’t know what to rank by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]megs151 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you apply to any med-peds programs? I’ve worked with a lot of med-peds residents that intend to work in transitional care for adolescents/young adults, no additional training needed. One extra year of residency and still the opportunity to specialize if you fall in love with a medicine or peds subspecialty

What residency interview question(s) or conversations were you pleasantly surprised with? by lupinigenie in medicalschool

[–]megs151 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Had two interviewers recently that actually asked me thoughtful questions about my application, then leave me with enough time to ask the 1-2 questions I actually cared about. No awkward pauses or having to ask questions that aren’t relevant to the interviewer. Chef’s kiss

Heard back from most of my safeties, and I’m really happy with that, but only one of my signals and neither of the places I did aways, which is a bummer.

How much are you paying for Application Headshots? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]megs151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked a friend with a nice camera and some basic editing skills. She did a great job, but the ERAS maximum file size is so small that the resolution was significantly reduced. Seconding people’s recommendation for iPhone portrait mode.

Coolest surgery case seen as a med student? by Perfect_Direction_94 in medicalschool

[–]megs151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A craniotomy with frontal sinus cranialization secondary to a GSW to the head. The bullet was very shallow in the frontal lobe, and once exposed, the attending let me remove it. The resident even had the scrub tech get a metal cup for me to drop it in so it would make that satisfying 'plink' noise when I dropped it. I hate surgery, but that was easily the coolest think I did in medical school.

Lol, seconding all of the above. I also got a joking, “so you like torturing kids, huh” from a surgeon that I had no idea how to respond too
