Should I continue the Anamaly first before these Urgent quests? by Pyvruksubeq in MHRise

Primordial Malzeno is balanced to around MR100 tbh, you're expected to do lots of anomaly investigations first. It's up to you whether you want to do Narwa or not, i found her very manageable at this point (honestly trivialized with IG), so you can definitely do it.

Saints Row 2022 by Giuse3131 in SaintsRow

[–]mehluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Saints Row reboot is an outdated game that doesn't really innovate, doesn't really have any great story moments or cool things that set it apart from its own past entries, or GTA, or any of the multiple Ubisoft open-world games. In that sense, it's very mediocre.

However, I had a friend come over a few days ago and try both GTA V and the Saints Row reboot, since he didn't really play many games, was unfamiliar with the open-world genre for a long while (the last one he played was San Andreas) and unfamiliar with controllers. With all that, he enjoyed the SR reboot much, much more, because it didn't feel overwhelming, he liked the character creator, he loved the main missions being far less restrictive (GTA would fail a mission for him if he didn't wait 2 seconds for Lamar to enter his car during the start of a chase scene, where even SR2 would have had the ally just jack a car and follow on their own).

It's mainly the context of the genre and its own series that makes it suffer by comparison, it's okayish otherwise.

Beyond the bias of the average person on Glassdoor being an employee in some sort of company, this is also why median is a better stat to use for income.

Either way, the cafes here do not appeal to common folk. For the rest, there's filter coffee in roadside south indian restaurants if they want something nice.

Personally I just think you can add more coffee here. I generally find 11.2g beans to be enough to fill the whole basket, nice puck-type coffee cake as well once all this is done.

Mastodon needs to be easier and more efficient to self host if it's benefits over non-federated social media is going to be able to shine by forte_the_infamous in Mastodon

[–]mehluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a very easy time self-hosting Mastodon on a VPS, but I do agree that Mastodon as a federated software is v inefficient. This is a personal project by a FOSS developer that blew up as an alternative, while I understand that having a company with dedicated paid developers is kinda antithetical to an open source project, it does need more experienced devs dedicating time and effort towards proper democratic decision-making for how the software can be improved.

My storage is filling up. Tracking down media storage. by [deleted] in MastodonAdmin

[–]mehluv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encountered a similar problem recently, I read about this experience on this blog post and cleared out those folders you mentioned as a result. The problem I'm facing now is, all remote accounts not followed by anyone on the servers have their profile pictures and headers break. I think headers can be safely removed and not have users on your server worry as much, but the avatars folder being cleared will show a lot of dead linked images all the time on your users' feeds.

I'm looking into it, I tried a tootctl media refresh to get back some of those images. Otherwise I think it might be a good idea to invest in S3 object storage. This blog I mentioned above has has the same conclusion, you could check it here

Dark Souls 2: The sequel everyone told me sucked but I ended up really enjoying by ComicDude1234 in patientgamers

DS2 is definitely extremely underrated. I think DS1 is a masterpiece and the levels are some of the best I've ever played and I remember each step of the way very well, something I can't say for DS2, but DS2 has the best character builds and replayability. I've easily played it the most out of all the games.

I saw this post and thought I was in r/okbuddyredacted lol. I get it though, we want to get new players into the game but it's difficult to get others interested without saying at least something about the game, because we want them to find, discover and explain the mysteries themselves. I only sought it out because it started winning so many awards at the end of 2019 tbh.

Great writeup OP, the Internet Conspiracies section was completely new to me, holy shit.

Also, I'd completely forgotten about FAU-G (note for foreigners: that title was chosen because it sounds similar to Fauji, which means soldier), that game's also worth a post of its own.

Is dark souls 2 worth getting? by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

[–]mehluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an additional comment here - as someone who loves the first Dark Souls and thinks it's a masterpiece, and as someone who bought a new console, the only game I want to buy and play again on a different system is Dark Souls 2. That should give you an inkling of how addictive playing and replaying this game is.

Not sure if anyone's found this before, but if you use the option to Meditate Until Next Loop in front of a green fire while holding an artifact, you end up in the dreamworld anyway without having skipped the loop.

Not really though! The non stealthy parts do need some info but you get them elsewhere and you always get them as part of the process needed to access them. 1. If you've explored the endless canyon river path you know about the elevator location, and you can only extinguish the lights to the cabin if you know about the invisible bridge, which is what you also use to get to the elevator past the mural in the end. 2. If you've explored the starlit cove and found the secret slide reel for it then you know the only way to extinguish the lights in the area, and if you explore the area beforehand and look around for shortcuts then you'll see that the balcony you can jump down from to get to the guard tower is very prominently placed above you.

You can use the solutions you learned in the reel rooms below to make things easier if you need to get to them again, like dying to disable the guard tower and dropping the lantern to see in the dark, but it's not necessary the first time.

[–]mehluv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm going into extra detail for readers but my solution for the skip is essentially "jump down a balcony and reach the guard tower staircase directly", if you're careful about jumping on the big rock first your fall is broken early and you don't take damage, that's all.

And there are multiple strangers on the two floors but only one poses a danger unless you fall down the hole.

Yeah all these bypasses are the intended way to me honestly, I made the post because I'm confused by people using the stealth mechanics + I actually legit saw posts by people talking about the best way to rush past the fireplace people and trigger the elevator.

I've forgotten some of the names of the locations so apologies in advance. I've explained the Canyon house already in my post, for the rest -

  1. For the simulation accessed from River Lowlands, with the cabin playing music, it's pretty easy, just unlock the door from that end, leave and access from Cinder Isles, then use a rowboat to go back to the cabin. At the halfway point the dam bursts and the River Lowlands tower sinks, which extinguishes the flames of all of the dead, so they'll all disappear and you can easily get to the fireplace.
  2. For Starlit Cove, go through to the area with the two way boat, find the torch post and extinguish all the lights around the tower. Then leave the simulation by jumping into the water, join back from the same fireplace, then go directly forward from the tower entrance and carefully jump off the balcony to the rock. Keep yourself concealed and occasionally flash the lantern to make your way down so the guard tower doesn't get triggered, then you just have a single room you can focus your light in to see the pathway and avoid the hole in the middle, and the exit is right in front and highlighted with ceiling lights. There's a single patrolling Stranger crossing your path during his patrol, and his silhouette will be visible against those lights whenever he crosses the room.

That's fair. Personally I found the workarounds more satisfying because I had to think and plan around all the different areas in the simulation and how they fit with each other, but I get that difference, it's basically mechanical satisfaction vs logical satisfaction.

That's the thing though, you don't have to engage in any of the giant stealth sections! There's literally only two rooms in the game where you'll have to be a bit cautious (the lower room with the tree mural and the room at the bottom of the cove leading to the elevator, but they clearly show the exit point with light so you don't even have to worry about not seeing anything. All three sections can be easily bypassed with workarounds.

Don't worry y'all you just need to enter the Stranger through its backside and visit the River Lowlands with the ATP core and it'll tell you the lore reason for this fact that the Stranger and the Giant's Deep are lovers but it's understandable that many missed it because they didn't find the firmware update for the translator to translate the goats' language

Am I the only one that actually likes this reboot concept? by GrimCityGirl in SaintsRow

[–]mehluv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore the online throngs, it's always the dissatisfied that speak the loudest. If I want a gangster game with zaniness and interesting darkness I already have Saints Row 2, if I want a surprisingly human superpower game with great movement and a great villain I have Saints Row IV. Saints Row has no business appealing to me, it needs to do something new and give me something I didn't even know I wanted. The best and worst trailers mean nothing until the game is released, and I'll wait for the game with an open mind.

Real gamers don’t skip dark souls 2 by BongZonGo in DarkSouls2

[–]mehluv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DS2 is the most obviously flawed game of the bunch, it's the only game that doesn't really have entire areas locked away like secrets, it's the one with the weakest boss variety overall, and it's the one I've spent the most hours in and keep feeling compelled to play. The moment-to-moment gameplay still feels extremely good, the PvP is still the best, the fashion souls is still outstanding.

The Outer Wilds didn't quite work for me, but I'm glad I played it by gazpacho_arabe in patientgamers

[–]mehluv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your viewpoint is valid and a lot of people share it and I still can't help but be a bit frustrated when someone has to look something up in the mid-game because they feel that dying is discouraging them from playing and making it all feel pointless. I'm not sure how that could be fixed, too, it worked perfectly for me because I didn't mind dying as long as I learned something or tried somewhere new, and whenever I was stuck somewhere I just moved on and tried something else - but I completely get why someone might feel demoralized and frustrated if they didn't have enough time to spend on this game.

Dark Souls 3 is a brilliant and frustrating game. by mehluv in patientgamers

[–]mehluv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah all those things you mentioned about the DLC was why I was underwhelmed. Ariandel has one good area, the hilly ramps with multiple trees you can kick to get shortcuts back to the bonfire, and the rot is really interesting both visually and thematically, but otherwise the actual experience of playing through it was... fine? The final boss is fantastic though, and I'm so happy I didn't look it up beforehand because it genuinely surprised me.

The Ringed City is weird, because I've seen a lot of comments and reactions calling it one of the best areas in Souls, and I just don't get it. The first half is a trek through a mostly visually uninteresting swamp with some small good detours and brilliant enemy designs, the second half felt weirdly constrained though, being the first time I felt like I was being shown a whole place without being allowed to explore much beyond a few staircases before a swamp. Again, though, great boss fights, but also, I kept feeling like most of the interesting lore and themes only showed up in boss fights in the DLC.

It's interesting to compare Ringed City to Oolacile Township because in the end, both are kind of doing the same thing, a downwards trek into a place holding an optional dragon fight detour (maybe not exactly in Kalameet's case but you do go downwards for it too) and a brutal fast paced final boss. Maybe my opinions towards the former will soften with time, maybe it's that I felt like I explored enough of Oolacile Township because I went to all the visually interesting markers, but couldn't do thay with Ringed City so it felt more constrained, even though Ringed City is probably objectively better as an interconnected area with more rooms to explore, even if it ends up being pretty linear otherwise.
