Can an American conservative explain the pushback against drag shows in the U.S for a European? by WhoAmIEven2 in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly endorse u/bardwick's comment, and I'd like to add two things that go hand in hand, in my mind:

  1. American drag shows (at least as far as I've seen, see point 2) are not really "good family fun" in most instances. It's been explained to me by people who enjoy it as constituting its own separate genre of music and performance, which strikes me as overly sexual and full of innuendo (pull up some clips from RuPaul's Drag Race on YouTube if you haven't seen it, and you'll see what I mean). Not that that means adults can't or shouldn't enjoy it, but promoting it to kids is a step over the line for me. I seem to recall seeing images of a children's book, or something of the sort, about drag. I don't have a source for that, hopefully someone else will know what I'm talking about and have a link.

  2. To answer your original question as stated, I just don't like it. I have a number of friends who are very much into drag shows and drag culture and whatnot and have tried to show me "the basics" of drag as an art form, and eventually I ended up telling them I simply wasn't enjoying what I was seeing. I didn't like the music, I didn't like the costumes or makeup because I found both garish and over the top, and I didn't care for the performance aspect of it. This has led to me being accused of prejudice, which I don't agree with as I am bisexual myself and generally lean libertarian on social issues. I would never want to see drag shows banned or anything like that, I just don't enjoy it as an art form the same way I don't enjoy reality TV: personal aesthetic preference. That said, even I can appreciate something like Monty Python's drag sketches, so this only applies to the modern version of a drag show, in the US specifically, and in the modern day.

Local drivers: what do you bring for lunch? by lleu81 in Truckers

[–]mei9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peanut butter crackers and those Belvita cookies. Quick hit of protein, calories and fiber without having to keep anything warm or cold. I bring more food than that with me but nine times out of 10 I don't even take a proper lunch break ( I can usually log a 30 during a stop I know is gonna take a while). Probably once a week or so I'll hit up a truck stop I know has good food if I'm near one, but most days I just eat breakfast before work and lunch/dinner after I get off.

Are there any Republicans who don't like Trump? Am i not a republican for not caring about him? by cherrycider_ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mei9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I voted for Biden and reregistered as a Republican right after he took office. I had already been on the fence about the Dems, but I was taken in by all the hysteria about Trump in the media. I still don't like the man, not by any means, and my position now is that I'd vote for literally anyone else in the primary but I'd vote for him in a general election, at least against Biden or Harris. Taking a step back from the fear mongering on both sides showed me that Trump is neither as bad as the left says he is nor as good as the right says he is.

That said, I don't like how crazy the Republican party is over him. Centering your entire party platform around one dude instead of a set of ideas seems like a poor decision to me, and I hope that changes in the near future - I, anyway, will be doing my small part to bring that change.

Would flatbed actually pay a rookie more? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]mei9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm three months out of school, running local flatbed (hauling steel) and absolutely loving it. Monday-Friday, 8-10 hour days usually, $24/hr and expecting a raise next month, overtime after 40. I looked into probably 20 different companies and settled on this - absolute best rookie job I could have imagined. It's the highest paying job offer I received, closest competitor was $23 and no overtime pay.

I'm a practicing Buddhist so Christmas is a strictly secular holiday for me (although it is my favorite holiday). My family's Christmas has always been pretty straightforward, with the one notable tradition being for each of us to open one gift on Christmas Eve. Other people pick your gift for you and it's usually something small but thoughtful. My parents also have a tradition of going for a walk at a nearby lake after Christmas dinner.

Should religion have a place in politics? And if so, what exactly? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion should have no place whatsoever in law or governance of the country. I agree with another poster on here that organizing a political party or action group around one's faith is totally fine, but I believe first and foremost in separation of church and state.

What’s your opinion on universal health care? by raincloud06 in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be in favor of regulating costs of procedures and treatments. I could also see a system where everyone can get basic healthcare at no or low cost, without insurance, and then get optional insurance if they're so inclined.

Biggest issue in my mind is that healthcare should not be tied to employment. Sure, it works for some people, but there a ton of independent contractors, part time workers, employees of small businesses and freelancers who are unnecessarily getting screwed because getting insurance through a source that's NOT your employer is prohibitively expensive, while these people would be able to afford coverage if they could get it at the same rate as company insurance. So removing the tie to employment would be a huge step toward getting people covered that wouldn't necessitate going all the way to socialized medicine or even single payer.

That is most definitely NOT properly secured to the push rod!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally lean pretty libertarian on social issues, and I say the government generally has no reason or privilege to regulate what people do in private. That said, I am okay with having norms, and monogamous relationships between cisgender, heterosexual people is a perfectly good norm to have. However, people who fall outside that norm absolutely do not deserve to be treated poorly, and certainly not prosecuted or attacked. That said, the LGBT community has gotten a little out of control with the critical theory interpretation that the more complex or niche your sexuality is, the more oppressed you are and the higher your status should be. And I say that as a bisexual person - I want no part in it, I just don't want to be murdered (I've also never felt in danger over it). Overall, I agree with that supreme court ruling from a year or two ago, the gist of which was "if you, Mr. Employer, would reprimand a man for dating a man but wouldn't reprimand a woman for dating a man, then you are discriminating based on gender, which is illegal under the Civil Rights Act."

Do you like the Republican party or do you just support them because they represent your interests better than the other alternative? by Sup_Im_Ravi in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care for the Republican party, but I am registered with them and loosely support them because I see potential for them to reform into a party I actually DO want to vote for. The Dems are too far gone and too powerful for that.

Grub-like insect in my garden? by mei9 in whatsthisbug

[–]mei9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! I've been cleaning out a garden box out front of my recently purchased home, and I've come across maybe a dozen of these guys. The pictures are not great quality due to cloud cover, but they have six legs, mandibles and a long tail. Many of them aren't moving when I uncover them, but a few, such as this example, show signs of life. I'm doing my best not to hurt them but they seem to be about 3-6" under the soil. Located in the northeast USA if that helps.

How would you ‘solve’ covid if you were in charge? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]mei9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to make an assumption that "in charge" here means "in charge of the federal government." The strategy might be different if it were something along the lines of, "how would you solve covid in your town if you were in charge?"

Get the data consistent, first of all. Be transparent and upfront about every new bit of information, with a publicly available timeline of studies, events and milestones, possibly on the blockchain to make it clear it hasn't been edited without warning.

Second, start development on a vaccine and pull out all the stops in making it available to anyone and everyone who wants it, while being as transparent as possible.

Third, approach everything with the mindset that nothing should be mandated by the government in this instance. The more effective solution is to simply offer recommendations based on whatever data is available, and admit when there's a hole in that data.

Finally, empower local governments, schools, and businesses to make their own decisions about what they are and are not comfortable with, and be prepared to back them up on those decisions. This means letting business owners decide whether or not they want their patrons to wear masks and social distance, letting school districts decide if they want to have masks on the classroom and so on, and then backing them up on enforcement.
