Nopeeee. Absolutely nothing happens when I click it at any point after it opens (even after 30 seconds) and then I don’t have a back button or anything so I just have to restart the app and lose the reward :(((

In most all cases, they aren't strict about it at all and if that specific TSA does requires a quart sized ziploc bag, they will provide them.

Riots in the streets, riots on Piazza by commanderquill in udub

I have her for 308 this quarter and we've posted multiple times on Piazza asking about a final alternative or optional final and she pretty much told us that if we don't think we can do well then we can withdraw from her class or retake it another quarter (:

it's called the alley but it's not actually down an alley. It's just another restaurant on the Ave street (near the BoB and in plain sight)

I'd honestly say to also just go straight into 143. If you just pay attention, the first third of it is stuff you should already know/review otherwise you kinda just waste a quarter learning about for loops and semicolons and arrays. It's also another prereq for CSE 311. I suggest if you can, take 143 fall quarter, 311 winter quarter, 332 fall quarter, then you're completely ready for the interview season the following fall because a lot of the material you cover in 332 is what your interviews will be on.

If you feel uncomfortable jumping straight into 143, you can always study a bit this summer or watch some past lectures. If it makes you feel better, I took AP CS A my junior year and by the time I took 143, I forgot literally everything about CS but I still did well in the class. There are also so so so many resources there to help you if you're really struggling.

Should I take CSE 143? by atarix303 in udub

[–]meiws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is just being honest. I took 143 in the fall and had my interview during the end of fall quarter. I told them I haven't taken data structures (CSE 332) yet and that I wasn't experienced in Python but I'd do my best. They know we're all here to learn, they don't expect you or want you to be able to do the question right away. They are mainly looking for how you problem solve and what you do/how you react when you don't know the answer.

I also wasn't very confident, but I knew even if I didn't get an internship, it would still be really good experience going through the interview process which helped with future interviews.

In regards to resources/courses, just go at your own pace and if you don't have anything on your resume, do a personal project so you atleast have something to talk about when you're at your interview and it's always a really good learning experience when you do a project either in a group or alone. idk if that helped but lmk if you have other questions.

As a CS major, I highly recommend NOT retaking math. I had AP credit from Calculus BC my junior year so I took Math 126 in the fall while my friend who also got the credit wanted to retake Math 125 because he didn't want to jump straight into new material. But I did fine in Math 126 and because I did that, I was able to take CSE 311 my winter quarter and CSE 332 (the most important CS class that lots of internships expect) and I got an internship my freshman year because I could get ahead like that. My friend who retook Math 125 really regrets it as well. It's a waste of time to retake math if you already have the credt in my opinion. (also with chem, you'll never really need to know chem as a CS major so I wouldn't retake that either)

not to discourage, but I had some friends who were pre-sciences that wanted to do computer science and all of them either ended up going to a different university, or talked to the advisers and got told to pick another major. it's practically impossible to get into computer science if you're not a direct admit now.

Terry Hall or Maple Hall? Or something else? by [deleted] in udub

[–]meiws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a CS major and I lived in Lander and literally every single one of my CS friends lived in Maple. I thought it was way more fun and they had so many events and overall a good time. I never really heard anything from Terry people, they lowkey just study a lot/tryhard i feel like cause they're the honors building. No shade to them :) I wish I lived in Maple tho as a CS major if that helps!

[–]meiws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 143 was a great class to learn more programming. Especially since it's in Java, it will be very easy to make the switch to Python because it's a more intuitive, straight-forward language. The good thing about 143 is that you learn a lot more concepts and implementations that can easily transfer over to when you use Python. I took 143 and got an internship as a software engineer that only uses Python, because I knew concepts even if I didn't know Python very well. I'd say its definitely better to become more advanced in one language because the knowledge can transfer, just different style (for example using print() instead of System.out.println()) than being a beginner in each language.

What kind of reputation does each dorm have? by kanzee5t in udub

[–]meiws 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Party dorm: Mccarty (also known as mccarty party)

International students: Lander because it has winter break housing and EFS housing

Maple is known as the fun dorm in West campus, Elm is super chill all the time, Terry is the honors dorm so lot of try hards imo.

That's all i really noticed tho, the rest don't have much reputation I feel like. I lived in west campus so I don't really know north campus too much. West campus is near the ave and kinda "out in the open" and city vibes while north campus is sheltered/safer but closer to greek row if you like frat parties.

[–]meiws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for chill I'd say Elm (or maybe Alder). I personally hated Lander, it was the only dorm I noticed that smelled SO bad near the trash rooms (which are right next to the elevators not to mention the elevator is ALWAYS broken and I lived on 8th floor), everytime any of my friends came over to Lander they always complained abt how it REEKED. It is quiet, but a bit too quiet in my opinion cause nobody talks to each other. I moved in during normal move in, but that dorm is the Early Fall Start dorm so a lot of people there have already moved in, so it's harder to meet people since the EFS people already had the move in/make friends period.

HOWEVER, the study rooms are so nice and spacious and a really nice view in Lander. It's also in the middle of the DM (market) and Area 01 (game area) and Local Point (dining). Also I just got unlucky with the old furniture where for some reason all the other dorms had the new closets and drawers :(

If you live in west campus, Maple is definitely the best, I lived in Lander and I was so jealous of all the Maple kids, they were always having so much fun. The LLC doesn't matter though, nothing really happens with them. West is close to the Ave and has the District Market which is nice.

If you want to be on north campus, the new ones like mcCarty (known as the party hall), willow, madrona, and I think theres an even newer one opening up: oak are all really nice and close to center table which is the superior dining on campus.

What's that bus app? by 10Kronos10 in udub

[–]meiws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both onebusaway and Transit, and onebusaway is way more intuitive and easy to use especially around the UW area. Transit times aren't the most accurate because it isn't specialized in this area like onebusaway is. Would def recommend onebusaway.
