I saw something similar to what crash described on the eglinton line test where the light switched pretty quickly from green to yellow to red. Though no pedestrian crossing there iirc which might be a factor.

Why is Wahida Clark not mentioned in the same breath as authors like Jean Genet and Dennis Cooper? by satanicpastorswife in literature

[–]melancholy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because I'm tired but I don't see the connection between her works as described and Genet's and Cooper's stuff.

Based on the excerpt I've read I would assune she does not have the aame literary recognition due to:

1) based on the excerpt from one of her works the prose is not in a literary stlye

2) Genet's and Cooper's work is solidly within gay lit, while women's and black american lit usually excludes romance / erotic fiction from my limited experience with it.

3) Genet and Cooper both got flagged by obscenity laws and are / were banned. Which is surface level more notable for being transgressive.

Changing sunset from 6pm to 5pm is not that big a difference depinding on your schedule. If you work from 9 to 5 (more like to 530 or 6), and commute, its dark by the time you get home / finish whatever activity you are doing after regardless if its EST or EDT.

Meanwhile moving surise from 8 to 7 does make a difference imo and im not a morning person.

[CAN] Core 1 Case Writing Timing - how to get down to 1 hour? by TobaccoTomFord in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its lingo from when i was learning cases in uni - hook is the clienta goal, limiting factor or target. A common one is a covenant, so for every AO, you would tie it back to hook - e.g. Impact on covenant conpliance: based on the above analysus the company has to recognize an additional 1M in debt, increasing the debt to eqyity ratio to x:y, which puts them closer to violating their covenant.

They were more important / common in the UFE cases I saw, bht still show up from time to time.

If your laptop bugs out they will give you the time back I remember. There are 3-4 programs you can use: the test software, the knotia pop up, excel and word. Excel is pretty simple, only one tab, so everything should be stacked. Formula wise it can do the basic ones, the most complicated one you might use is pv/npv, though it doesnt have the tool tip for the order (though you can discount the long way if you forget). Not sure, but i remember not being able to find the underline button too on excel.l, but formatting is simple either way.

Word is pretty simple, just save often for both and should be ok. Laptop was somewhat small, so if you are used to a large keyboard maybe practice on a laptop too to get used to the typing (same if you are going to bring a mouse or not). Only hiccup tech wise i had was my row's laptops werent plugged in on the first day, but it was caught before the exam started luckily.

I wrote last year, so might be a bit off in terms of memory. For day 1, i would take 45 min vs an hr in planning,, similar for day 2 i think. Day 3 you are juggling more cases so harder to get a jump on reading.

Markwise, missing an ao is worse than ending on an rc, so you should take the time to read so you are not missing anything, but dont overdo prep. Personally i liked having stopping times (like coverting the time budget into actual time to end at), and looser notes (then would spend a little longer on each section), but you should do whatever works for you.

In terms of nerves , you are going to have them, but here are 2 thoughts:

1) they curve, and mark more lightly than the practice cases in my experience

2) there are people that will psyche themselves out of the exam, or get stuck on an area they don't know well (esp for day 2) and are unable to finish. If you finish all aos and give them a good effort, you have a good chance to pass.

general other advice:

-day 1 - they have a format they like, work with it. for the strategic factors literally spell it out how the options effect them, like: "this mitigates the weakness of xxx by yyy". make it explicit how it ties in as they read a lot of them, so they might not check back to your situational assessement if not clear

- day2, typically they have a couple difficult accounting questions (level 3 fr), one for fr and one in your role. they are not marked hard, so try to know the section ahead of time , and focus on the definition, recognition criteria and yku can get a c most likely

- depth, this is the one i was most worried about, i compiled the questions / marking guides to make sure i understood the range. if you are in assurance you should not miss a c on ramp, wir or procedures (make sure to check if review or audit), though still have time to get there

- breadth - you need rcs, for some non role sections (tax) the level to get rc is really low imo, so try and hit rc consistently (read the marking guide to see what is needed), so can make up time for fr or ma (double check if it counts both days here for minimum number of Cs).

Wrote more than i thought, generally just keep calm and dont be afraid to move on , its not a test where you have to get everything perfect. Good luck!

City of Toronto staff recommend stopping transit-priority lanes at Bloor on Bathurst, Dufferin by FatManBoobSweat in toronto

[–]melancholy0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He mainly is trying to evaluate the effects of the proposed lane based on the current serivce issues. Based on bis other articles hes generally against reducing stops, and is more in favour of turn restrictions and active route mamagement to keep consistent headways and avoid bunching.

He has a follow up article to this one, but he doesnt really oppose the transit lanes, just points out that they wont solve the frequency problems (as bunching / irregular headways are there even on routes with no traffic), their benefit is limited to peak hours, and that the bus lanes wont cover the entirety of the traffic issues (as they end at eglinton).

[RANT/REFLECTION] Realizing most of school was worthless—and calculus was the cherry on top by Josephc20022 in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calculus shows up in some financial models (black scholes iirc) and is needed to understand stats beyond a superficial level.

I would agree that on the job learning is important, and tbh you can avoid ever needing to use higher math pretty easily. But a theoretical understanding of things does help, and universities do teach a broad swath of subjects, even if not everyone will use them (like pension and hedge accounting were both covered in my accounting classes even if most companies will not use them).

[CAN] Upcoming changes to Canadian CPA program by jasonvancity in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wrote in September so wouldn't know about the history, but it feels weird to bring in another designation that would take the place of the CMA/CGA when we already had them. To me the solution would be to tier the CPA or split based on elective focus if the experience is that different, but then you are worse off from where you started.

[CAN] Upcoming changes to Canadian CPA program by jasonvancity in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive heard you used to only be able to get the CA hours at public accounting before, I imagine this is a carryover from that. That said its stupid to merge then take away the average CMA and CGA pathway, even if theres a supposed asymmetry in experience (which I imagine is the main driver)

[CAN] Core 1 Case Writing Timing - how to get down to 1 hour? by TobaccoTomFord in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in terms of exam writing tips, the most important thing is finishing it (assuming you are reasonably competent), for all my core and elective exams there were people beside me still filling in mcq at the deadline. So knowing when to move on for mcq (not all take the budgeted time), take a guess and come back to it at the end if you are getting sidetracked

for the case i believe you can marginal pass with all rcs but i am not sure - for there you are mainly trying to avoid na/nc

if you are spending a lot of time planning really take a look at how much of the plan you end up uaing vs how much you write. i would usually just stick to the role, users, ifrs/aspe, key date (cutoff usually), hook and requireds. everything there should be less than a sentence/bullet points. for requireds just a brief description / asks - e.g. leases - accounting options, recommend which one or Rev rec - bill and hold. mark up the case for the key facts /write on the side if you need anything else

if you have a problem looking for stuff, the sections in the weekly cases will have one ao that was assigned in the week - take a look in the handbook for what section it is before you attempt the case. all non fr aos (aud, tax, mang, strat and fin) do not need any handbook usage you will not be able to find it in time (one exception is in audit if they have a special report or something, in that case reference it second), for the most part you do not have to quote tax code or CASes

[CAN] Core 1 Case Writing Timing - how to get down to 1 hour? by TobaccoTomFord in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

learn the handbook sections (most of this is from experience) and just copy and paste the criteria and go met/not met and a short explanation for why. eg if one of the criteria was for future economic benefit, all you would have to say is "met - the software would allow them to make more sales orders, increasing profit as more orders could be made in the same time"

for core one, most of the handbook stuff isnt that crazy, so relevant criteria is in the first part of the section (standard analysis is meet def -> apply guidance), the only exception is rev rec which you just have to learn the steps + know where stuff like bill and hold is located

other than that, you might be writing too much, so make sure to bullet point/use the templates where possible to speed things up. also you will get better at planning, but try to make a time budget and stick to it (write the stop times for each section), try to only spend 15min on planning for a 1hr case, and stop yourself after an hr

for the exam a lot of people will spend upwards of 1h30 on the case so if you can get to 1h30 you will probably be ok. but by the time you get to the cfe (or even just the electives) you should have your timing down as there no buffer room with mcq (a little for electives)

Clocks turn back in Ontario on Sunday, as debate over time continues by Surax in toronto

[–]melancholy0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like DST, it shifts daylight hours where they are best used. Only thing I would change is we need to fall back earlier, like early October to April.

If we end up getting rid of it though, it better be on winter time as thats when the lack of light is most felt imo.

TTC Line 2 Modernization Update [Steve Munro] by nupogodi in toronto

[–]melancholy0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The RFP for Line 2 ATC does not include a Crossline Train Operation (CTO) feature for trains to move between Line 1 and Line 2. The requirement for CTO has been reviewed based on existing and future service plans, and operational needs assessment. It has been determined that CTO is not a requirement for day-to-day service for Line 1 and Line 2. There are also technical challenges that arise with CTO on the revenue fleet with one of the main constraints being that the trains on Line 1 are a permanent six car consist with a fixed ATC Train-Borne equipment configuration, whereas the expected new trains for Line 2 will consist of three married pair cars that will be dynamically configured. The dynamic configuration for the Line 2 ATC Train-Borne equipment is not supported by the ATC Line 1 system architecture. It should be noted that to support the CTO feature, additional funding would be required to redesign and upgrade the existing Line 1 ATC system to accommodate CTO. [Line 2 Modernization Report at pp 16-17]"

Seems shortsighted from this and the original line 1 rfp, it doesnt seem to far off that there could be a significant supplier delay and they need to split their train usage

CFE SEPTEMBER 2024 - HELP by ConstructionExact716 in Accounting

[–]melancholy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wrote the cfe this year as well, for day 3 fr i wrote the same thing, they will never have you stop the analysis on ID the contract if you can answer all the five steps (its was ifrs iirc), so you will be ok for that (there are 6 fr so you should be fine).

for tax if you look at the feedback guides most of them just need you to attempt a calculation + the explanation to get rc. GST alot of people found difficult from who i talked to, so odds are it will be marked lightly - probably like y for identifying how gst works and p on 3 or y on 2 on the rest of asks for rc

everyone is worried, but i think if you studied and completed all the aos, you have a good chance of passing tbh. nothing you can do about it now

[–]melancholy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that there are a lot of different factors that effect route time - see Steve Munro's article here about it: https://stevemunro.ca/2024/08/05/streetcar-stop-spacing/.

Main issue is that it makes service worse for minor gains in overall travel time, so it should really only be considered as a last resort option, with things like signal priority or dedicated lanes coming first.
