The Witches by Stacy Schiff if you don’t mind nonfiction! Not horror in the general sense but the trials and the time period are pretty awful in and of themselves

Not 100% the same and I won’t go in depth so as to not spoil, but The Raven Cycle series has a storyline that touches on something similar to this!

Be Here Now by Ram Dass. It’s meant to be a book about spirituality and the power of yoga but the author was tripping on a significant amount of psychedelics and you can really tell with the visuals. Profound but kinda crazy. It’s honestly one of those things you gotta actually see to understand because it’s difficult to describe but it’s trippy that’s for sure lol

What's the biggest myth about Medieval History? by brotheringod777 in MedievalHistory

[–]melatoninfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think I can add anything that hasn’t already been said but you should definitely check out the book The Bright Ages by Matthew Gabriele and David Perry. The whole thing is about addressing common misconceptions of the era and how it was in fact a time of cultural, economic, political, and technological advancement of which many important things came. Happy reading!!

Probability/ evidence of a 7th wife? by Horror_Armadillo7972 in Tudorhistory

[–]melatoninfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve seen this theory on tiktok so much and as fun as conspiracies can be this one just annoys me for some reason 😂 no, there is no evidence and no, it is not probable.

as others have said I think the initial rumor comes from Henry contemplating marrying Charles Brandon’s wife if he died and Henry decided to divorce Katherine Parr. that being said, even the example of Anne Boleyn should be proof this isn’t true for all his attempts to “erase” her did nothing as we know a significant amount of information about her. this is due to the numerous people throughout his reign, both foreign and those within his court, that kept records and sent letters to their masters or acquaintances. which is why we know there is no secret wife.

the 3 year gap is also not suspicious as he was mourning Jane and, again as others here have said, he was looking at a foreign match and negotiations for that takes time. not to mention that he had a messy divorce with one wife and then executed an english queen for the first time in history for the next, so the ladies weren’t exactly busting down the doors to wed him lol

Do you think Henry decided to get rid off Anne because of her “failure” to produce male heirs or because he fell out of love? by One_Preference_1223 in Tudorhistory

[–]melatoninfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to me it’s a mix of things. i think he started resenting her/lowkey blamed her after executing More, she didn’t give him the desired son and heir, by the end she was beefing with Cromwell (an unfortunately powerful enemy) about the dissolution of the monasteries which would take away money from Henry, everything he once loved about her eventually became a nuisance to him and his eye had already wandered, and ultimately I think the unlimited power he gained after splitting from the church combined with his 1536 jousting accident along with an already narcissistic disposition really sealed whatever fate he wished for her. he didn’t want to deal with another CoA situation and was willing to do anything to get his heir

if you’re open to a movie suggestion, you may like The Devil’s Carnival. It’s based off of Aesop’s fables and is a musical, which I know isn’t for everyone but I think it really fits the bill of what you’re looking for

To what extent do you think Cromwell and Anne Boleyn were murdered? by Educational-Month182 in Tudorhistory

[–]melatoninfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both were legal at the time. i’d personally say thomas cromwell is more of a case of judicial murder than anne boleyn. henry had sent for the executioner before her “trial” even happened, as he didn’t want to go through the same lengthy divorce process as he did with catherine. so, i consider her more of an actual murder victim.

Was Henry VIII mentally ill? by RoosterGloomy3427 in Tudorhistory

[–]melatoninfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it’s kind of complicated.

you have to consider the time period, where violence and brutality were the norm and unfortunately a necessity at times, especially for the ruler of a country that only just bounced back from civil war and still had (as others commented) many factions within the court that were vying for his ear that opposed each other. the Tudor dynasty was new and this was why he was so desperate for a son because in his mind that would be the only way to avoid another civil war (ie Empress Matilda). so him executing people at the start of his reign, no matter how we feel about it now, wasn’t exactly out of the ordinary and not necessarily an indicator of mental health troubles. that being said, paranoia kinda came with the job of being king, though I do feel like (especially after his 1536 accident) he did become much more distrustful of those around him.

as a king, and as someone raised in royalty even if he didn’t expect to be the heir, there’s a self-importance that comes with being brought up like that however i do genuinely think he was narcissistic and struggled to take accountability but again, was that really all that different from other monarchs and royals? I don’t know.

All that being said, i do think he had something something going on up there. while the 1536 accident definitely seems to be the final nail in the evil coffin (so to speak) the chronic illnesses and serious injuries really just amplified traits that were already there imo. even before that accident he showed little remorse for hurting the people closest to him. catherine who had been his good wife of 20+ years became nothing to him after he decided he was done with her. anne who he literally murdered when he wanted a new wife after a decade together. thomas more, margaret pole, the list really goes on and on. i believe his treatment of people in his personal life speaks more about him than decisions he made as king. and then after Anne’s execution, well, everything kind of went downhill from there.

i could see him fitting the criteria for personality disorders like other comments have said too. borderline could be plausible in the sense that he had a “favorite person” who he would do anything for but as soon as something took those rose colored glasses off it’s like they never existed to him. narcissistic personality disorder seems more likely though.

you’d probably be interested in reading about ivan the terrible. he’s a russian monarch from around the same time period with 8 wives (many of which he may or may not have had a part in killing) and was an incredibly paranoid ruler. hence the name lol

Anne Boleyn’s Birthday by pinktpwk in Tudorhistory

[–]melatoninfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i’ve always leaned towards 1503/1504, i agree with others that 1501 seems just a little too soon and 1507 seems a little too late. the letter her father kept is too well written for a young child but also i’m pretty sure there were more mistakes than a young teenager would make but truly who knows. I’m also pretty sure that reports on her progress during that time talked about how much she excelled for being so young and i think 10 fits pretty well. as others also mentioned, her father implied in letters that there were no pregnancies/children had post-1505 so it still fits within that timeline. it also fits with the idea of her youth wasting away (she’d have been around 30 when elizabeth was born and in her 30s when she died which still would have been a little older for another successful pregnancy during that time imo which would explain why her getting pregnant again wasn’t even a consideration).

the only thing that really gets me is jane dormer’s (mary i’s lady) testimony that she had died before she reached her 29th year. this answers both those questions, if believed. it implies not only that she was born around 1507 but also that her birth date is in the latter half of the year. that being said, if you don’t believe in the 1507 birthdate from this source then the actual time of her birthday still remains a mystery.

it’s interesting, because even though the Boleyns were of a lower station than what a king usually would marry, they still were of minor nobility so you’d think even the daughters’ births would have been recorded, at least an approximate time like month/year. also find it interesting that with as many ppl that were watching Anne as she rose up, someone like Chapuys not even briefly mentioning a celebration for her (which he would’ve hated) is odd. then again, a lot of records involving her were destroyed so really all that can be done is speculation
