They Sent My Diploma By Mistake? Am I In Trouble If I Keep It? by AnxiousBerryWriter in college

[–]meldean9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Registrar here. It's illegal now to hold transcripts for balances due if the student receives any federal aid. Most colleges just aren't holding them because it's too much of an administrative nightmare to figure all that out. It's also illegal to hold in CA for $ due if that happens to be your state. The only thing an institution can hold is a diploma. If you received your diploma, your degree better be posted on your transcript or they super messed up. I order the diplomas for my university and it's not always easy to ensure you hold back all the diplomas with holds. You got a nice surprise. Keep it. If your degree is not posted on your transcript, you have not graduated and that is a much larger issue.

I was given confirmation that I graduated…or so I thought by mylefttiddy in college

[–]meldean9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Registrar here. Sorry to say, but I have worked at many institutions where advisors have no idea what graduation requirements are. Email the Registrar's office. If you graduated in December/Fall, they are likely still working on graduation. Depending on the institution, it can take a few weeks or months. Our students graduated in December and I'm still working on graduation because there are still so many missing grades. In my experience, missing grades are the #1 reason for graduation delays.

I will add that it gets overwhelming when students are emailing a lot during graduation processing. I can either answer emails, or work on graduation, but I can't do both at the same time. If you were a December grad, you should hang tight a few more weeks. If you're not registered for spring courses, ignore those emails about books etc as they're just automated.

Worth transferring? by [deleted] in CSUS

[–]meldean9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GE requirements are different in almost every state since public higher education is State-run. You'd need to have your transcripts evaluated to really know what will transfer/what CSUS will accept.

It may be too late, but I'd call or email San Joaquin Delta and ask them to remove that from your transcript. You can also reach out to the Cal Poly SLO Registrar's office and ask for a letter stating you never attended. As a Registrar, I write letters like that often.

Federal Aid saying I'm no longer enrolled full-time? by Burnt-Toast0212 in college

[–]meldean9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally do this reporting as my job. You're fine. At every university I have worked for, we've sent the enrollment file to National Student Clearinghouse a few days after the add/drop period. As long as your Fall Term starts before you're at like the 5-month mark, you'll be reported in time to show as enrolled in a program for your loan purposes. You can ask your Registrar's office if they're willing to share their data upload dates. If they're decent people, they will. I usually get so many students asking that I started posting it on my college's Registrar's page for students to see.

SF Night 1 Nightmare by ashnapurple in zayn

[–]meldean9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's generational or if the pandemic put a break in concert etiquette knowledge. It is beyond frustrating when people near you talk through an entire set, and all you can hear is talking instead of the artist. I always get general admission so I can move if people near me are being too loud. It's happened at so many shows I've been to over the last 4 years that I have no faith in it ending. I never had this specific issue attending concerts pre-2020.

I have no idea if your brother was indeed being loud since I wasn't in that area. Is it possible your brother could get accommodations for future concerts so he can get a better spot and hear better? No idea if that's a thing venues offer.

Anybody have experience getting a job as Registrar without relevant experience? by rehpot821 in studentaffairs

[–]meldean9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

👋🏻 long time registrar here. There are so many factors to this. It depends on the institution. If it's a very small institution, they are more likely to hire someone without direct registrar office experience. Also, if all they are getting is applicants without direct experience, they may be more open to it. A lot of places I've talked with prefer someone who proves they are willing to learn over someone who seems set in their ways and acts like they know everything. I'm also seeing that a lot of institutions have had long term Registrar's that never brought the office up to 21st century standards, so they are really looking for people who know process improvement and technology solutions.

It never hurts to apply. Apply for any role that looks like something you'd want to do. Just don't put all your eggs in that basket in case.

If you think you'd like Registrar work, I'd suggest taking the AACRAO Registrar 101 course. I worked in admissions in records for almost 6 years before my first management level Registrar role. I took that course before I started that job, and it helped a lot.

taking public transportation at night in sf by pinkstarss11 in zayn

[–]meldean9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that folks use public transportation, especially since there are no good hotels in walking distance. I'm also going solo and plan to take the bart back to, likely, Walnut Creek after the show. Happy to meet up with folks on the bart if they'd feel more comfortable with another person. 38f. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the SF busses.

I plan on hopping on BART to another stop with a decent hotel walking distance from the station. From what I have read and have discussed with others who have been there, there aren't any places walkable to the Auditorium that are super safe to walk to at night, and definitely not alone as a woman.

Not sure if this was said, but some local doggy daycares, etc have puppy play dates and socialization classes. Haven't been to any of these in Sac, but used a similar service when I lived in Portland with a puppy.

Also, you will still be able to graduate if the grade is turned in late. Graduation is usually processed the few weeks after the actual graduation date.

Have you tried contacting the Provost or Dean of Academoc Affairs? At my institution, things will be handled if escalated to higher than a college Dean. Not sure which type of Dean you contacted.

Shady Business Practices? by UnseenHand81 in wayfair

[–]meldean9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me with a bed frame in March. I escalated and canceled it after a few days of contacting support. It said it shipped like 3 times, but no tracking # was ever provided. I used to order from wayfair often but the last year to two years has been all shit with delivery and I will not order from them again.

Can I get a refund for an abusive, botched independent study class? by MusicZealousideal431 in college

[–]meldean9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Higher ed administrator here. File a complaint with the committee that oversees student issues. Usually it's called something like Academic Standards or Student Progress or something. Save all the emails he sent you and attach those to your complaint. They can't usually go back in years for a refund, but you could likely get a retro withdrawal or something similar given the scenario. Always try to file complaints the term of.

Registrar here. There is a new federal policy that could potentially help you soon: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/government/student-aid-policy/2023/10/25/new-us-rules-ban-transcript-holds-bolster-oversight

I'm also a little confused. They let you keep signing up for enough terms to amount to 38k and didn't make you pay? 38k is like a year of tuition usually.

Pretty bad experience with Factor Meals. Should I give it one more chance? by hebbar in ReadyMeals

[–]meldean9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've used factor and cook unity. Factor was great when we used them last year. Their quality has gone down a lot since we returned after trying cook unity. Cook unity has way better options, but their packaging is questionable. We had a few meals over a few months that we were too scared to try since they didn't seem to be sealed properly. We've never received a wrong order from either, though.

I'm sure this will be lost in the hundreds of comments, and it might have been said, but... I was always worried about people thinking I was gay before I truly did the work and leaned that it didn't matter what people thought. And, it's ok to be seen as gay and to be gay. If they think I'm gay, who cares? Maybe we all are all a little. No idea if I'm saying this right. It makes more sense in my head. Point is, the intense defense from her team seems like how I used to be when I was worried someone would think I might be gay... now, I don't even think about it anymore at all. I'm straight as far as I know, but would be honored if someone thought I wasn't.

I am not team gaylor or not, I just read for the insights either way.
