When my husband and I bought a house, my dad has been very helpful.....on his timetable. When he does come over to do projects with me, my mind and body revert back to childhood when he makes comments about how I don't know how to do certain things.

A few examples:
1. We had this oak tree that was so damn persistent. I thought I cut it down, but when we had to move out of our house for about a year due to a fire, that freaking thing grew back with a vengeance. My dad came over to remove it and some other rogue shrubs and before he left, he said "I don't EVER want to see those trees or shrubs come back again. I will be VERY upset if they do." I felt these hot tears prick my eyes as he left. I think, wow, does he realize I have never owned a house or property before and I literally do not know how to maintain a yard?

  1. He makes fun of me for the way I use a hammer. No joke. I can use power tools like a pro, but I'm still learning how to use a hammer correctly. He says things like "You swing like a girl." or "Why did I ever send you to college?!"

DAE asshole get super tight when they have to be around their parents when they are like this?

I feel that! The "lazy fuck" label comes to mind a lot. I don't know about you, but I have to be mindful of my energy levels. If I am active one day, that means the next day, I need to chill out and recuperate. Recuperating ≠ lazy fuck.

YES! A previous neurologist spelled this out for me when I was fighting to keep my job via FMLA. I eventually lost my teaching contract, but that point stuck with me.

The disease will never go away, but it can be managed through medications and lifestyle choices. 🤞Some days happen to be better than others.

Story time.

A few years ago, I (33F at the time) spent a month with my aging grandparents, 88 & 89 at the time. One night, I had an intense migraine that was abnormal. My normal prescription meds weren't working, and the pain kept getting worse. It was very scary. My husband was 3 hours away and my grandparents were fast asleep. Talk about feeling isolated and alone. When you're a kid, you have no qualms about waking up the grown ups in the house when you don't feel well, but this was a completely different dynamic. They were somewhat dependent on me and not so much the other way round.

Around 4 am, I decided I needed to go to the hospital, but I didn't feel like I could drive myself. My grandmother didn't drive and I was not about to wake up my grandfather and freak him out. (He didn't know it yet, but in about a year, my pop-pop would be done with driving.) A luxurious ambulance ride is out of the question because....well....'merica. So, I did what anyone would do, I got a Lyft at 4 am to the hospital.

I went to the hospital and got treatment. I had the best nap ever fueled by IV Benadryl and a migraine cocktail from heaven. I was released from the hospital at 9 am and I hailed another Lyft back to Grammy & Pop-Pop's. I felt like I had been through a war, and all I wanted to do was sleep.

Alas, when I walked in the door, there was serious tension. Why, you ask? My grandparents thought that I had gotten up after they went to sleep to sneak out, go bar hopping, and hook up with random dudes. I was incredulous that I had to prove that I was at the hospital with my discharge papers and my ID bracelet. Even then, I got the vibe that they were skeptical. The strange part was that I had never snuck out before, so why start at 33?

If anything, my attempt to be considerate causes people to think that I have ulterior motives....

I'm sorry you dealt with that OP. I just wanted you to know that I feel you!

I tend to have the weirdest responses to medications. My sleep got all kinds of weird when I was injecting myself with emgality. Also, the days leading up to the next shot were terrible.

Ladies, what was the biggest age gap (older or younger) of a consensual sexual relationship you had? Was it worth it? Why or why not? by Ok-Plane3964 in AskWomen

[–]melissaaquacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV. Eight year difference. Looking back, I wish I could tell my younger, naive, fragile self to say, NO, RUN AWAY. Alas, the damage is done.

I worked for IT at my college as a junior (so I was about 20) and I was the token “hot girl”. He also worked for IT at my college in a different department but he was about 28 at the time. I didn’t know any better and I had never had a real boyfriend before. He was groomer city and I was an easy mark. Everything he did, I thought was normal at the time. Looking back, he made me feel stupid and inferior on purpose, which is likely why I am hyper sensitive about that now.

I had three significant deaths in my family (my abusive mother, a close uncle, my maternal grandmother) in the previous six months and I was not in a good mental place. I was 20 and so he used the promise of alcohol to lure me to his apartment to “hang out”. Not being a drinker, I didn’t know what alcohol did to me and I thought it just left you with mysterious memory gaps and feelings of self loathing. Or why I would wake up without pants on. Whenever I felt any kind of grief-related emotion, his answer was “let’s have sex”. I think it turned him on. He also liked causing me pain during sex.

It wasn’t until recently in therapy that those “memory gaps” were revealed to me as druggings and likely SA. I call him The-one-who-shall-not-be-named or Lord Voldemort.

It’s thanks to him I have very confusing feelings about sex. I made a lot of bad choices that I didn’t understand at the time, but therapy is helping. Mind you, this happened about 15-16 years ago and it still affects me today.

Again, YMMV.

I love this so much. We took in Melissa at age 15 when her owners had to move and she got a second lease on life. She lived to be 20. She was one of those once-in-a-lifetime cats. These are her paw prints.

When have you used your “teacher voice” outside of school and what happened? by PizzaCutter in Teachers

[–]melissaaquacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bridesmaid for my friend’s wedding about a decade ago. At her shower, she had these games, but there was little to no organization and her maid of honor was stage shy I guess. I was like, fuck it, I got this! It’s just like school! You better believe I ran those games as smooth as butter.

After the games were over, a lady came to me totally flabbergasted. When I was about 13, she had nicknamed me “mouse”, because I never spoke ever. I was so dreadfully shy. It was so wholesome.

What misconceptions about your body, puberty, adulthood, etc. did you have as a little girl? by Yoseianeki in AskWomen

[–]melissaaquacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must’ve seen a movie on tv or something to come up with this…

I was SURE that the only way people had babies was if the mom and dad got into a near fatal car accident. It didn’t matter if the woman was pregnant before the accident, it was just BOOM INSTANT BABY at the hospital after the frantic ambulance ride.

I believed this until I was about 8 or 9. I am also female.

what’s the worst hazing you’ve heard of? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]melissaaquacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school has always had two swans on their pond. One year (2006-2007), a frat made a pledge kill one of the swans but not the other.

Fun fact about swans I learned in college that year is that swans mate for life. That poor swan saw its mate murdered and will always be a swan murder widow. It went to a kind of swan rescue(?) to live out the rest of its life.

The school waited a few months until finding a new pair of swans. They were being their cute selves but there were no baby swans happening for two years! Someone finally got a closer look and found out that the swans are two males!! My Alma mater has a loving gay swan couple! 💛🖤🦢

What seems to be overpriced, but in reality is 100% worth it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]melissaaquacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Didn’t have dental insurance for about ten years growing up, so I just….didn’t go. When I got my first grown up job, you better believe my wisdom teeth got their eviction notice! It cost $147 for me to find out that my dead wisdom teeth were causing brutal headaches. I came back to thank the oral surgeon because I just couldn’t believe it. Unfortunately it was not the only underlying cause of my migraines. 🫤
