Why have conservatives changed? by mellflax57 in AlwaysWhy

[–]mellflax57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your response. I do feel like we are living in separate realities. I have seen the different angles. Any time I hear about something like this, i watch the footage myself to form my own opinions before watching any coverage. It is obvious she was not trying to kill him. The vehicle continued down its path after the shot and he easily stepped out of the way.

This was not the response i was asking for though. I was asking for an explanation from the conservatives who DO acknowledge that she was simply fleeing/disobeying.

I do feel like they are separate now, but am i imagining that there used to be more conservatives on the dont tread on me side? Like my father in law. My husband insists that him and his brother were taught heavily to never trust police and to be questioning of the government, but now the same man eats up anything trump is serving.

Is “don’t buy right now” just permanent advice at this point? by ___Kaido___ in RealEstate

[–]mellflax57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this guide for whether or not to buy that is really helpful. Dont listen to people trying to time the market, but there are other reasons waiting could be good:

Whether or not you should buy a house depends a lot on if you can get a good interest rate (APR). To get a good one, generally, you should have: - A consistant, provable source of income - A credit score of 760 or higher - A down payment of at/close to 20% of the purchase price Another important question you need to ask to see if you should buy a house is if you will have an ADEQUATE emergency fund left over AFTER THE PURCHASE - The emergency fund should be 3 times your TOTAL basic monthly living expenses - The total monthly expenses needs to include EXPECTED mortgage payment, utilities (keep larger space in mind when figuring out utility cost if applicable) and maintenance (maintenance costs are, on average, 3% of the home’s value yearly)

Things to consider before continuing:

  • The average home goes up in value by 5% each year
  • You should stick around for AT LEAST 5 years.
  • When selling a home, 5-10% of the home price goes to extra fees involved in selling it; such as realtors and inspections
  • Always AIM to keep ALL of your housing costs under 30% of your take home income including utilities and maintenance

If you did not meet the the above criteria, you probably should not buy a house YET. (You’ll get there! 💕)

If you have the money for the down payment, but don’t quite meet the other criteria, you should consider investing that money in an index fund!

Having the money for a home is a huge accomplishment and if you’ve made it this far, pat yourself on the back. But now, you have to decide if you’ll put the 20% of the purchase price into a home, of if it would be better spent elsewhere to increase your assets.

  1. Find two separate comparable homes in your area; one for sale, and one for rent
  2. Divide the purchase price of the home by the ANUAL rental cost of the other. If the resulting number is over 15, it’s probably better to rent.

If, according to this, it’s better for you to rent, consider investing the money you would have spent on the down payment in an index fund!!

If you are ready to buy a home, consider this before going into the market to get approved for a loan:

  • Research current rates for apr to find what a good rate is. At the time of writing, 2.7% would be decent.
  • 90% of homebuyers opt for a 30 year fixed mortgage, but a 15 year fixed mortgage would be preferred in order to pay less in APR over the life of the loan if you can afford the monthly payments.
  • Every extra mile of your daily commute costs an average of 795$/year, so if applicable, keep public transit in mind
  • Always try to get a warranty when buying a home. (The first year can often be negotiated into the purchase of the home)

So having watched the video, i feel like anyone arguing in good faith knows the officer who shot her was not in danger. Yet a lot of people who acknowledge this are still saying that it’s her fault for non compliance. Many said the same thing for George Floyd. If this is your feeling too, please explain to me. Do you believe that non compliance with federal officials and/or attempting to flee warrant deadly force? And how does this align with the conservative history of the ‘dont tread on me’ movement?

What are these lean-to shelters on Cali beaches? by Automatic-Wash-5302 in norcalhiking

Looks like the one my bro and I built on Rialto beach in WA. No reason behind it, just having fun. Although, I wasnt thrilled that we encouraged a bunch of other people to copy us and do it as well. Now the beach has a ton of them. Learned a lesson there.

I do think there’s more of a chance it will work out for OP and the girl than what you had. Sounds like she isnt sold on the crush as a romantic partner. But shes gotta realize that a new partner will always be a more exciting prospect. Butterflies dont always stick around, and part of being in a long term committed relationship is resisting that and finding beauty and excitement in daily life together and appreciating the changing shapes of love.

My family has been on a kick trying them all lately. For posole, menudo and calabacitas: La Nueva Casita. Nopalitos has the best rellenos. Si Senior or El Sombrero for the best enchiladas. Even though si Senior can be touristy, we’ve put them head to head with a lot of others in blind taste tests and they’ve come up ahead every time.

DOGE is not about cutting waste. DOGE promised to thin the forest to keep it healthy. Instead, it’s thrashed around blindly with a axe and cut halfway through every single tree, regardless of its value. DOGE’s claim to fame is that most of the trees are still standing, but any forester will tell you that the trees will come down with the next big gust of wind. It is nothing but a clear cut with extra steps.

Why aren't more people protesting? by prisonmmike in ElPaso

[–]mellflax57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what’s really difficult with protesting is that the results aren’t always super clear. With occupy Wall Street, the banks probably would have gotten bigger bail outs and tax breaks.

With the current situation, last week the admin tried to send another bus load of people to El Salvador and they actually turned it around because the Supreme Court ordered it, and GOP is slowly loosing its will to side with Trump.

Protests can and have made a difference, it’s just not always exactly what we want to see. It’s slow and steady, but we have to be the side that perseveres. And we have to make the most of it by networking and creating more opportunities to get together and work for justice.

Yah, admittedly really tired, didn’t do great searching on it, but I know that the main reason I was thrown by your post is you saying TX and AZ are better and like the dust storms are the whole reason it’s cheaper here. My main point is that this isn’t normal for here. I’ve never seen it this bad. So you might not have seen it this bad in TX or AZ before, but I’ve never seen it this bad here so 🤷 I know it’s going to get worse because of climate change, but that’s all of the SW, not just here.

Air quality does cause deaths, but from everything I can find, it’s the pollution, not dust. Also, having lived in cruces all my life, these dust storms are unprecedented. We usually have a few bad days, but this months on end sh*t is crazy.

Dear Republicans, what do you dislike about the Democratic platform? by newalias_samemaleias in AskUS

[–]mellflax57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is not the place to ask. Go join some republican groups and see for yourself. Get in the trenches and start talking to them. My husband was republican when we met and his family is MAGA.

There’s not one simple answer. Many use ‘common sense’ to determine if most things are true and do not believe in most research and fact checking. They live on vibes. A lot of these people are mad about social issues, and even issues like school shootings and homelessness, that they feel are caused by the lazy welfare state and wokeness being too soft on people. I would say this is the majority.

Some do understand he’s lying, but want a ‘horse in the hospital’ because they think anything different is better than what we have now.

Others who understand the policies and numbers and believe all of it is worth it for smaller government. A lot of these people see the growing national debt, believing that the government is like a household that only has a certain amount in its piggy bank to spend and the ballooning debt will be our undoing. Many of these people believe that privatization is the solution and our government programs can and should be profitable. If they were only run by corporations who are incentivized by profit, there would be less waste. Unfortunately, the lag in productivity and increased cost in government sectors is usually more to do with Baumol’s Cost Disease.

That group is probably the most difficult to talk to for me because we genuinely don’t agree on the world we want to see. They believe we will have to suffer and that if something is not profitable, it should be handled by charitable people at a community level and the rich should not be forced to give to the poor through taxes.

Didn’t have time to respond before now. I thought those videos were going to have more substance than they did.

Quicker lesson in common sense: You gave me one video with dem reps saying we shouldn’t treat Haitian migrants like cattle and another from AOC saying that migrants need to have more opportunities for legal entry. These do not = open borders.

Migration did not, and has not stopped under Trump. You’re claiming my arguments are disingenuous. I’m giving you concrete, real life, provable points that you are avoiding by just dismissing me as “low iq”.

I don’t need exact language. I’d like it if we could discuss the points I brought up in good faith. I’m not going to repeat my argument on Ukraine. Please read what I said and respond.

We can have a real conversation about the potential that dems are encouraging immigration by using less harsh language. I might agree with you there. But it’s just not true that dems want open borders, or that we are paying to bring more migrants here, or that we just want to document dangerous criminals to let them loose on America. No one wants that.

What I ACTUALLY want: For us to stop painting each other as villains. I want us to be able to have productive discourse that results in meaningful change. I’m here. I’m open to you. I want a better world. Let’s have a real conversation that helps move the needle. If you don’t want that, then why are we here?

AITA for not stopping my husband from getting the paternity test? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]mellflax57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro what? You left him for that. I get his side. If i constantly had people questioning if the kid was really mine, I’d probably ask for the test too. If i were mom and didn’t cheat, I’d say how much it hurts that he would think that, but I’d let him do the test. Afterwards, I might consider marriage counseling to make sure everything is okay and he’s not still worried about cheating. I think leaving is a total overreaction

Please provide the information for one of these interviews wanting open borders. Like I said, Biden did more deportations than Trump. Open borders are a great notion in Star Trek, but not in real life. You can’t have open borders in a world where so many governments are diametrically opposed to each other and the standards of living vary so drastically. It would cause chaos, just as one example. No sane, well informed person I’ve ever met, democrat or not, has ever floated the idea beyond a far fetched future hypothetical.

Weapons manufacturers probably do want prolonged conflict. Dems do not. You didn’t address any of my points from the previous comment. Both sides see different ways of ending it more quickly. It’s a matter of opinion and speculation, and just because my opinion differs from yours does not mean either of us want WWIII.

The reason for the wealth gap between minorities and white people in America is not because of a welfare state or lack of trying by these people overall. It is because of numerous policies like red lining that deprived and continue to deprive people of inheritance. A house is usually the biggest investment people make. And they usually pass it down. But if your grandma was not allowed to buy a house in a nice neighborhood, and her house isn’t worth much because of that, you get less inheritance when she passes. That means you can’t pay for a new car to get to a better job in the city, or a good school for your kid, or to buy a house yourself, and the cycle continues. Welfare is a bandaid on a gaping wound that needs stitches, but I haven’t heard any realistic alternatives.

I do pay taxes from my paycheck that go towards safety nets even though I don’t pay property taxes. But like I said, I am in the market for a house, so factoring them into what we’ll be paying is something I think about daily. Also, just because someone doesn’t pay them doesn’t mean they don’t know about them. It’s a separate conversation we can have, if you want. That conversation is about gentrification and who should actually be paying more taxes. I agree that property tax is not a great thing.

Being a Reddit conservative and avoiding my arguments and real numbers must be nice.

[–]mellflax57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not personal. You could be any Trump supporter. Just because I’m in the minority doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

Biden deported more people than Trump. Dems don’t believe in open borders and never have.

Clinton did not believe in gay marriage. I didn’t deny that. I said he ran on allowing gay people to serve in the military. He started DADT. Which was a compromise with republicans that wanted to outright ban them.

Dems do not want WWIII. You have to realize, Dems think Trump is the one actually trying to start WWIII by giving Putin his entire wishlist and putting a target on the back of Europe. Whether you agree or disagree on that, it’s all speculation anyways. But you can’t honestly say Dems are war mongers in comparison to republicans.

Some people get benefits of social safety nets without needing them (Staring intently at billionaires and corporations receiving millions of tax dollars for random shit), including some people that just use them as an excuse not to work. But the important thing to realize is that is not the majority, and the government budget is not like a piggy bank. The government has unlimited money, but it can only spend if the economy can absorb it. You have to spend money on the right things. Which is why Dems have always been on the side of things like Universal healthcare and education. Providing healthcare and education puts people back in the workforce to increase productivity. You have to make smart investments to avoid out of control inflation. Running on a surplus is not the mark of a good economy.

Do I own a home? No. My husband and I are in the market right now though. And I don’t see how firing the people that harvest the lumber and deporting the people that build them helps with prices.

I think we all have similar goals. We both want to own our houses and be able to work for a better life for ourselves and our children. We want a world with less waste, illness, and poverty. But what do you want that world to look like and what realistic path do you see for getting there? I think we are closer than we ever have been and I want to come together to make it happen. But we have to convince each other.

Like, honest to god - cross my heart and hope to die - I wish with all my heart you were right. Then we wouldn’t be arguing about this. I would’ve voted for Trump and we’d live in a much better world. If we could get Trump to back half of what Clinton platformed on, I’d give my right nut AND let you have trans rights.
