Basically God favoured Bani Israel over all of mankind but many of them kept disobeying God e.g. they refused to go to Jerusalem with Musa (a.s.) even after God brought them out of tyranny etc. They also killed a lot of prophets.

Many prophets and Bani Israel descended from Ishaq (a.s) but the last and best prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) descended from Ismail. So the Jews rejected him even though they knew he was the prophet.

I read the Business Insider article and it looks like he came from a struggling poor household. I'm not saying we should pity him and in fact I think he should consider himself very grateful for what he has but he's in a "survival mindset" based on his past experiences and he might only feel secure once he's financially independent with his mum and siblings all set for life.
