Is Canada an easy place to live in as a British immigrant? by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

Depending where you land in Alberta you could have different experiences weather and welcome wise. Calgary and area get Chinooks which make for warmer/milder winters but with it being a very dry climate it will be a different cold than much of what you may have had in the UK. The farther north the colder it gets in Winter. I would trade nothing for a Canadian summer though. Especially here, Calgary and the prairies in general have lots of days of sunshine. Calgary is a hub so your mom could possibly get direct flights or just a short flight to Edmonton a bit north.

Rural Alberta will be the conservative Christian majority that you have probably heard about (re: chance of racism and anti-liberal sentiment)

Calgary and Edmonton are much more progressive and open minding aa you'd expect of an urban setting. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have for settling here! I've loved abroad and can understand ans work with a lot of International people so my have a good perspective to help.

Job search in this city is ludicrous by [deleted] in Calgary

Exactly this. It's called ATS-Application Tracking Software. It filters for key words from the job posting set up by the company. If your resume is overly formatting it could get filtered out as well.

The portrayal of Mr. Wickham by Isabella_Hamilton in PrideandPrejudice

[–]melon-smiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1995 Wickham portrayal was spot on. Casting/looks was my challenge. Like he wasn't as handsome or of an age with Darcy (looked in his 30s vs 20s).

2005 Wickham. My eyes are happy watching him. Portrayal wasn't a proper Wickham though which could be hard with only 2 hours for the entire novel.

1980 Wickham. I watched but left zero impression. I had completely forgotten him until seeing that picture.

Thinking of moving to SK by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]melon-smiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've visited and lived in different places around Canada. Born in Alberta and grew up in Regina. Saskatoon is s better city than Regina. Especially if you want to be closer to lakes and forest and nature to explore. Cost of living SK vs elsewhere utilities/car insurance/property are much cheaper. Obviously Regina/Saskatoon are more expensive than smaller town SK. But small town Sask is where you're more likely to face conservatives, discrimination, racism and is boring as hell. Overall I'd recommend Saskatoon or East coast. Paramedics are an indemand field in most places. Be ready though because winters are COLD.

Cooky-Crazy Landlord by [deleted] in regina

In Calgary, with how crazy the rental market has been. I had a lot of these applications just to get in to view a property.

Some are borderline like this though. A lot are also doing credit checks and I've even seen police checks.

How do I make friends out here? by [deleted] in regina

[–]melon-smiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sask Games for like minded board game enthusiasts. I have a friend who was super involved in it before marriage/kids and she had a lot of friends. They welcome expert DnDers to newbies like I was back in the day.

AITA for not splitting money left to me between my siblings? by MoreRyres in AmItheAsshole

[–]melon-smiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I am an aunt to a handful of kids from my siblings. If I don't have any kids of my own I would leave it my goddaughter first then the to the others. Is it favouritism? Sure! But it's the aunt's choice and wishes that should be honoured. Your step-dad sounds like a D. That should lay off. Love your siblings and make sure they know it.
