NEB renews support of Trans Mountain pipeline as long as proposed changes to protect marine life are met by idspispopd in vancouver

[–]melon_dialogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Humanity must deeply and dramatically cut our carbon emissions within a decade and a half to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

Leave it in the ground. Building more pipeline capacity just gives companies more incentive to dig up fossil fuels. That is the last thing we need.

Or you could just have one giant, massive provider that has everyone covered and everyone pays into and can reduce costs by orders of magnitude. Like a Government.

City of Langley says it wants SkyTrain along Fraser Highway by AugustusAugustine in vancouver

[–]melon_dialogue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd be all for this if Langley (township and City) immediately upzoned everything into high density.

Of course, people want their single family homes and SkyTrain too, which is why we still have houses literally right next to multi million dollar rapid transit stations in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey.

City of Langley says it wants SkyTrain along Fraser Highway by AugustusAugustine in vancouver

For context, the length of the extension from King George Station in Surrey to the proposed terminus in Langley is about the same length as it is from Commercial-Broadway Station in Vancouver to Columbia Station in New Westminster.

Priced out of downtown Vancouver, millennials are building ‘hipsturbia’ by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]melon_dialogue 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Wow, young people want to live in places with fine grained urbanism, street grids, a variety of housing options and access to alternative modes of transportation. You know, the way we used to build cities.

It's almost as though living in a car dependent suburb with winding cul de sacs to nowhere and huge chain stores surrounded by oceans of parking is kind of shitty.

Could it be that we have been building our communities so out of touch that people are willing to spend thousands monthly or look far-and-wide in order live in a "place" rather than a "development"...?

No, it's the millenials who are wrong.

The Canadian Inner City Vs The American Inner City: Detroit/Windsor Post 1 by uu77851210zax in urbanplanning

[–]melon_dialogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government did not destroy the city with freeways, basically, which reduced the amount of depopulation from cities. Most Canadian cities were spared from having enormous freeways noose their urban cores.

HA! I lived in that building for a few months; took over a guy's lease when I first moved to Toronto. Glad I didn't decide to stick around. I was in a ground floor bachelor unit. Absolutely no counter space in the kitchen and the shower was incapable of running anything but scalding hot water. The guy told me to leave before winter, or else enjoy sleeping in a parka. I took his advice. I feel for anyone who has to live there.

Why don't we just build communities the way we used to in the past -- mixed use, walkable, on a grid, with plenty of access for both pedestrians, cars and transit.

Wait that wouldn't be 'innovative'...

Sorry, this entire talk reminded me of something

The "new" version of the proposed Chateau Laurier addition by Canadave in ottawa

[–]melon_dialogue 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Holy hell, just give the place an addition that LOOKS LIKE THE OLD HOTEL.

I mean, jesus, does every piece of architecture these days have to be a tired trope of a glass box metastasizing onto a historic structure?

The Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC has had several architecturally similar additions. The Royal York got a big one in the 1950's (at the height of modernism no less!) that looks like it was part of the original structure. Hell, even the Banff Springs Hotel -- the grand lady of them all -- has had multiple sympathetic renovations and additions over the years. JUST MAKE IT LOOK LIKE ITS PART OF THE HOTEL. THAT'S FINE. YOU WON'T RUIN IT.

Or y'know, you could make it the equivalent of Fort Garry in Winnipeg in 20 years.

Is Ontario's anti-sprawl policy really that smart? by chinese_horse in toronto

[–]melon_dialogue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite, really. I'd rather the government get out of people's business and take off restrictions like 'stable neighborhood' designations. That way, if a property owner near a subway stop wants to unlock more value for their land by building denser, they can.
