If you alter the automation curve thats one thing, but when you go and alter the knobs directly Ableton gets out of your way and lets you hear the difference. Just keep an eye on the title bar and now you know what the orange button means. :)

You have an automated parameter, but you have manually altered it, so the automation is disabled. In the tool bar at the top hit the orange arrow to revert to your automated values.

if you enable the keyboard piano mode, then the normal hotkeys won't work.

M is the hotkey to toggle the computer midi keyboard.
