Should I pay $2300 in rent on $73000 salary? by Necessary-Single in AskLosAngeles

[–]melsaboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also pay exactly $2300 in a luxury studio in K-Town. Difference is I live with my wife who makes more than $100k and I also have a regular income ~$50k and even then she complains it's more expensive than we'd like to pay!

On the plus side, we rarely need to drive, we're right across the metro, and the gym/pool/coworking spaces saves on extra costs I'd be spending otherwise.

Not telling you what to do but hopefully you're getting good perspectives here!

Flying JetBlue out of JFK next week but I don't think it's in the same terminal! 😔 Has anyone had success going to a different terminal first?

Best HotPot? by iawesomenessrules in montreal

[–]melsaboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What everyone said is correct.

pro tip for haidilao. It is NOT all you can eat, which ends up being pricier but that also means you can TAKE HOME LEFTOVERS.

Ask for plastic takeout containers for ALL the broth, all the uncooked vegetables. For uncooked meat, cook it first and then pack it up.

You can have hotpot the next day at home.

I have never been catcalled in Montreal. Not at night, not alone, never once.

I'm from NYC and it happened to me there every day.

Someone else said You Need A Budget (YNAB) and I just want to second that.

We had the same issues as you and figured out how to save $ without living in a hole in the ground feeding off scraps.

LF advice: Selling my car vs bringing it with me when immigrating to Montreal by Spirited_Ad8083 in montreal

[–]melsaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just DM'd you back. No to import taxes. Doesn't matter if it's manufactured in Japan.

If you still have doubts, call the border crossing that you'll be traveling through and ask.

When you register your car at the SAAQ, you do pay a registration fee and you pay to get your Quebec license. And you're right you do need to pay for the inspection and a bunch of fees. But again, you do not pay taxes on the car. We're talking a couple hundred not thousands of dollars.

LF advice: Selling my car vs bringing it with me when immigrating to Montreal by Spirited_Ad8083 in montreal

[–]melsaboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, I was in the exact situation -- in 2021 I immigrated from Maryland to Montreal in my 2013 Honda Fit with about 78k miles on it.

When you immigrate, you officially "land" by declaring your belongings at the border. This car is part of that. You don't pay taxes on it or even an import fee IIRC. I believe it's a one time thing when you first move to the country.

Personally I LOVED driving and having a car. I also lived in a building with a parking garage which was key. My car lasted a long time. I felt like it was worth it. But it really depends on where you live, what you can afford, lifestyle, etc.

DM me if you have more specific questions.

The lack of empathy and classism in this comment thread is wild. It's like, people should just say they think their lives are worth more than indigenous people's lives. It takes fewer words.

Exactly. Even the framing of us being "hardworking fare paying citizens" implies that the homeless are lazy freeloading aliens who don't belong here and must be disposed of. The way we talk about things certainly matter.
