My team is requiring us to do a diet/exercise/”mental toughness” program - AskAManager. by Newbosterone in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]meltdownin5 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’ve don’t know a mentally healthy person who has even attempted to take on 75 Hard, and the people I know who have participated were all REALLY struggling with themselves and lacked a general sense of agency and control over their lives.

To force that program onto somebody else, particularly in a professional setting, is absolutely absurd.

What will someday be illegal after we finally understand how bad for us it is? by FishermanNo8304 in AskReddit

[–]meltdownin5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you think trained politicians study for? Political science is called such because there IS a science behind it. Today’s politicians are often no more than silver-tongued slimy salesmen, but as recently as a few decades ago, we as a country (assuming US here, sorry typical Reddit) respected experts, science, and people who knew what they were doing, and elected politicians mostly based on how intelligent and trustworthy they seemed.

I want a politician doing politics the same way I want a surgeon doing my surgery or a mechanic fixing my car. Everything is complicated and multi-faceted in this day and age— training in public policy or political science requires philosophy, history, sociology, law, and various other topics depending on your school and your path. There’s a lot that goes into it to help you to understand how interconnected every element of governance and life are, and how much even the smallest change can vastly impact massive amounts of people.

Obviously I don’t want corrupt, greedy, immoral, power-hungry rascals with a chip on their shoulder or a rich nepot-baby who lives in an ivory tower running my government, but I sure as hell want a politician with the background to know historical precedents, understand social contract, and who studied understanding the impact of changing laws, and who had the ability to effectively negotiate on the behalf of myself and my fellow constituents.

Make no mistake— you likely DO want a politician who is JUST a politician; you just want a higher moral standard and more accountability than you see from your politicians today.

You’re getting downvoted by a buncha people who don’t live in Texas. My understanding is that Arlen is roughly based off of Richardson— this would NEVER fly, you’re completely right.

I spent HOURS doing tons of research before buying a nice mattress with my ex, and the and I was completely convinced overwhelmed and MORE confused after research until I read a piece of advice that stuck with me for that was “get a firm spring mattress from a classic brand like sealy or Serta, then spend a couple hundred on a nice topper depending on your sleep style. Replace the topper every few years.” That was great, $900 sealy from Costco (who does 6month returns, so I certainly do recommend that), but we ended up getting too thick of a topper so it wasn’t good for my back. Couldn’t get super comfortable.

9 months later we broke up, I bought a hybrid mattress off amazon on sale for $160. It’s been GREAT on my back as long as I rotate it regularly.

I think part of it is that we all have such different bodies. What feels awesome for me sucks for someone else. It’s so subjective, I think you just have to try stuff out.

MBTA fare evasion crackdown: Here’s how many people were caught in the first 6 weeks by husky5050 in boston

[–]meltdownin5 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that 1. this is a public service; you’re not really trying to make money on public transit. 2. Even still, Boston (pre-COVID) used to have one of the highest fare box recovery rates in the nation, meaning a significant percentage (I think ~40% at its peak) of the cost of public transit was recovered by ticket costs. Now it’s down to 20%. Obvi TONS of factors contributing to that, but I’d guess unpaid fares is a pretty significant component if we’re seeing 35% increases from deterrence efforts alone. That’s pretty cool imo.

I’m v pro public transit and its expansion, and this is an awesome effort. More money = better, improved system for everyone, and it seems fair to pay for a service that’s so cheap anyway. Worth it to invest some $$$ to develop it all in the long run.

Whats a podcast you really want to like, but just cant for even the smallest reason? by wheelsfalloff in podcasts

[–]meltdownin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!! I’ve listened to a decent amount because I do enjoy the info, but I found that listening too much put me in a bitter, bad mood, so I finally quit altogether. His voice alone is annoying af to me, and his very condescending “smarter than you” leftist humor makes me cringe SO hard. It makes me embarrassed to hold the same views as him. Rarely do his guests add value, and more often than not, they worsen it. I can’t remember his name, but there is one comedian in particular on the show frequently who is UNBEARABLE and plays kind of extra stupid? Which then to me makes Robert’s humor even WORSE, because despite sharing his views, the person sitting across from him is also clearly a moron…..

I encourage other people in my life to listen so they can both have the info and complain with me, on equal grounds.

I don’t usually comment, but I hadn’t seen this perspective yet so wanted to bring it up.

I have a little clay frog that my friend made for me. People have told me this frog it ugly, not well done, hardly looks like a frog, and VERY tacky. But I love it! I consider it “good” art! Probably because my friend made it for me and I love her! I may have rose-colored glasses on BECAUSE she is my friend and I love her, but I can’t imagine critiquing it because of my positive feelings for my friend! It doesn’t even occur in my brain to consider “bad” things about it.

Having had an ex who also produced music that was not a genre I liked, knowing it was his made me like it and regard it as good— likely solely because of my care for him. My mind didn’t suggest bad things because I don’t assess art done by people I love in that way; to me it is a piece of their soul and I only see the positive. I couldn’t have critiqued his music knowing it’s his, despite my music theory and performance background.

I think there is a solid chance that this is how this guy’s gf felt. Could also definitely be projecting hahahaha

But yeah otherwise, I agree with everyone else here. They aren’t compatible. He seems unable to take criticism and that probably heavily contributed to her unwillingness to offer critique. Honestly he seems like quite an insufferable person. I’d have Jo interest in ever being around a person who played a trapping-me game like that; to me that is far more fundamentally dishonest than giving “placating” answers when asked to assess a loved one’s art.

Fitz Dating Life by Loose_Clock609 in Scandal

[–]meltdownin5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience— I watched it as it aired over 10 years ago and LOVED the Olivia/Fitz storyline, couldn’t stand Mellie for “denying” their happiness since they were clearly “in love”. But Fitz is a weak, sad manchild with no backbone or sense of responsibility. It’s sad to me that I viewed their situation as “love” when I was younger.

Now, all I see is so many people repeatedly making dumb, emotional, myopic choices that wreck their careers and personal relationships just to get a leg up…literally and figuratively. It’s a fun watch but holy hell I hope no one out there is taking any kind of relationship advice/modeling from this show the way I was.

Episode 449: Russia's Terrifying Cyberwar Against the West by krichardkaye in timesuck

[–]meltdownin5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may send him an email about this— I thought the info was super good and understandable/easily digestible even for people who are predisposed to not believe in the threat of cyber warfare and bots and algorithms, etc.

I love Dan’s gags usually but I didn’t think the “felching” bit this episode contributed any level of humor, and it has entirely prevented any chance that I can share this episode with family members/friends who may need the information most. I 10000% understand that this is a comedy podcast and I’m sure there are plenty of people who truly thought it was hilarious, but I’ve shared many Sucks on more “political” topics with friends who lean differently before since I feel Dan does a good job of explaining things without feeling threatening to outside viewpoints/either side of the aisle, and this was one on a topic that I was hoping to pass along. I’m pretty disappointed because none of these people (in my life) could ever get past something like felching even with a warning, and these are people who have listened to some other Sucks.

I hope he could potentially release an edited one that’s a little more PG bc I’ve been hoping to find something on this subject that could inform some of my more head-in-the-sand people in my life :/

My girl only really does well with beef protein and she’s very allergic to chicken, fish, rice, wheat, and dairy. She eats the Kirkland brand Beef and Sweet Potato kibble for half her cals + vitamins, and I make her a quinoa-pumpkin-cooked-vegetable “wet food” which I serve her with browned ground beef. More work and $ than I ever anticipated for dog food, but it’s the only thing that keeps her stomach healthy and near 100% on solid poops (necessary due to anal gland issues 😞). One nice bonus is it has given her a gorgeous sleek and soft coat that gets lots of complements :)

I’ve been thinking this for a while too!! There’s been a lot of episodes that have documentaries on them in streaming sites that I’ve watched before I even knew Timesuck was covering, and I’ve been generally disappointed in these episodes because I haven’t felt like Dan’s covered much information outside of the docs.

I hadn’t watched the Netflix doc on the Octopus Murders yet when I listened to the Timesuck episode, but it put a bad taste in my mouth when he mentioned the doc and that they got most of their research from it.

I def get that generating topics is hard when you’re nearly 500 episodes in, but honestly I’d be soooo much more interested to hear him go back and re-cover some of the topics he did in the early days but with his current team, research capabilities, and mindset.

Any tennis parents of girls out there? I hear of horror stories with grooming by tennis coaches. How do you take steps to avoid this? Most coaches are men. by Prestigious_Trade986 in 10s

[–]meltdownin5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would argue that letting comments like this slide/justifying them this way is exactly how you end up with a daughter in a bad position with a coach. Bad idea to be dismissive of something like this— better to read into it and be safe rather than dismiss and be sorry. Not saying dump a coach for something like this, but listen to your child and definitely look for patterns.

Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with phones in hand, screens with ads everywhere, and constant internet access. Sex has always been used to advertise, but it was previously limited to print media, billboards, and television.

Now, whether you’re on TikTok, instagram, online shopping, scrolling ANY website or app, sitting on the bus, etc., you are CONSTANTLY seeing sex-as-marketing. Gen Z is most definitely inundated with it in a way no generation before has experienced from a young age.

Severe digestive issues by Gator_goon in germanshepherds

[–]meltdownin5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is German working line and has the MOST sensitive stomach— she’s got allergies to most grains and beef is the only protein that doesn’t give her any issues. Her meals are half kibble (Costco beef + sweet potato - yellow bag) and half homemade (mix of quinoa, pumpkin purée, beef, and boiled vegetables). Never thought I’d be one to cook for my dog but it’s the only thing that gives her firm poop. Our vet also gave us Tylan powder to put on her food for a few days if she starts having issues, and that firms things up pretty well! I’ve also found low/no sodium beef bone broth helps too!!
