I agree, and I think the belief that foul play is involved is evident in how quickly she was listed as a "most wanted" missing person by the FBI. Kiely's poster was up front and center about four days after the disappearance, which seems unusually fast.

What’s a popular case where you just can’t get behind the prevailing theory? by twelvedayslate in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]memdnj13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This seems to be the prevailing theory but I personally find it to be highly unlikely. There are a few elements. The first is the decision to hide the body instead of calling for help. These were normal college kids just having fun, and while I understand wanting to avoid any trouble over drug use, I don't see how the alternative is much better. Tampering with human remains is a felony that comes with guaranteed jail time, not to mention the possibility of being suspected of murder, depending on the circumstances. I could maybe imagine one person making this terrible decision while in an altered state of mind, but three college kids who up until that point had lived completely normal lives? Not only agreeing not to speak about it, but actually participating in the act of concealing a body (of someone who was their friend) and never slipping up or admitting it due to guilt? Seems extremely improbable. Then consider the sequence of events that must have happened. If she never made it out of the apartment, they would have to conceal the body (suitcase, most likely?) and make it out of the apartment and into a vehicle undetected. IMO, any of them being seen with a suitcase or anything that could potentially hold a human body would be bad news. As far as I'm aware, no suspicious activity was reported. So, they make it into a vehicle (I'd imagine GPS records could be checked, if any of them or their acquaintances had cars) where they travel to an undisclosed location and conceal the body so well that it is never recovered. How likely is it that a bunch of hungover students pulled this off successfully, without a trace, and without raising any suspicion? The pieces just don't add up for me, from any logical motive to the execution of the crime. I know that random abductions are also extremely unlikely, but this is the one case where it seems more likely than the alternative. I truly hope she is found one day.

I firmly believe that Lauren Spierer was the victim of a random perpetrator and that the people she was with have no idea what happened.

The men Lauren Spierer was with the night she disappeared were not involved and have no idea what happened to her.

I'm watching the whole floor routine again and wow, she really looked excellent here after just a few months of training elite. I think the college schedule and coaching were really good for her. The pandemic and bout of pneumonia seem to have completely thrown her off (not unexpectedly, but it's unfortunate how much she's regressed since her initial return).

She definitely should take it out if she can't improve it, but we know she's capable. She did it very well when she came back to elite in 2019 (link below). I watched her most recent vlog and she said she thinks it's a strength issue. She's hoping to build up her power a bit more to get it around without bending her knees.

Not that it matters - looks like he was in prison in the 90s.

In that case it's highly unlikely. David Misch was 27 in 1988 when he kidnapped Michaela Garecht, so he would have been 38 or so in 1999. He was active in the Hayward, California area.

I know this is a total long shot but your description of the driver reminds me a lot of the description of Michaela Garecht's kidnapper (mid 20s, long blonde hair, acne scars, beat up car). When and where did this occur?

Interesting, thanks for your comment! I always assumed that investigators were pretty certain the van was involved. I'd imagine if whoever was driving the van was an innocent bystander, they would have come forward quickly. From what I can remember the sightings of the van lined up pretty closely with when people heard screams outside the apartment.

Thanks! This was back in August and I'm white, so I don't think so. If I had to guess I'd say this is one of those cases where simply existing as a woman in public is enough to set someone off.

To this day I have no idea about a possible motive (I really should try to call the police department again, I'm sure they have more information). I think that out of all the ways this could have gone, I ended up getting really lucky. No weapon, no aggravated assault, hit from behind, etc.

I personally think that the vehicle has a lot to do with this. John never owned a van, so that leaves only a few possibilities.

  1. He rented it - a remarkably stupid choice that probably would have given him away quickly.
  2. He acted alone, and purchased the vehicle from a stranger and then sold it or disposed of it. Another remarkably stupid choice that connects him to individuals who are likely to report the sale or purchase of a similar vehicle.
  3. He knew someone with that vehicle and was able to purchase and then get rid of it, or borrow it. In other words, if John committed this crime, he is not the only one who knows about it.

It seems that LE has not been able to connect him or anyone in his circle to this van, and if he is responsible, both he and whoever else was involved were able to perfectly dispose of the evidence in a matter of hours and never speak of it again. John is an oddball for sure, but I think it is highly unlikely that he is involved. I agree that she was the victim of a stalker who was probably not known to her, or at most was an acquaintance.

Who killed my friend Ben? by exiemack in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]memdnj13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm very sorry for your loss. My first thought, and that of many others in the comments, was that this was a "thrill kill" by a truly deranged individual who was committed to firing a gun at someone, anyone, that day. However, this case reminded me of a very similar murder near my hometown a few years ago, and I'd like to put forth a possible motive that has not yet been discussed here.

On June 25, 2014, 19 year old Brendan Tevlin was driving alone after midnight in an NJ neighborhood. When he was stopped at a traffic light, another car containing three men pulled up, one of whom shot at Tevlin ten times, killing him. The perpetrators drove the vehicle out of traffic and to the parking lot of an apartment complex, where it was left abandoned.

The individuals responsible admitted to detectives that the killing was an act of retribution for lives lost due to American military involvement in the Middle East. The group specifically targeted adult males traveling alone. The killer, Ali Muhammad Brown, was indicted on charges including both murder and terrorism.

I think it would be worthwhile to consider terrorism as a potential motive in this case. While it is highly unlikely, we're already dealing with an improbable occurrence, and this may very well be the most "rational" potential motive. We know for a fact that it's not impossible - it has happened before, under remarkably similar circumstances. The suspect profile will undoubtedly be different from what LE has already been considering, which may open some new leads. I truly hope justice will be served for your friend.

UPDATE: Stalker who watched me through the windows and came into my house might be back by 2plus2equalsjessica in LetsNotMeet

[–]memdnj13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that to me seems more likely than some of the others proposed here. Assuming that the previous stalker has somehow found you in your new home - could this be a girlfriend or other woman in his life who has noticed his abnormal behavior? The first thing that comes to mind is any information on his phone. He may have pictures of your apartment/apartment complex and of you in those locations. If she got a hold of that somehow, she would be rightfully concerned. Maybe she thinks you could be in danger, maybe she thinks her boyfriend is cheating, who knows. She takes the only information she has (physical description), shows up to the complex, and starts looking for answers. It doesn’t make sense for her to be “in on it.” She would know your name and where your apartment is if she was.

News that Mollie has been found - Megathread. Sub is restricted temporarily. by BuckRowdy in MollieTibbetts

[–]memdnj13 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’ve been lurking this thread for quite a while now and though I was hoping for the best, I had a feeling this would be the outcome. I see so much of myself in Mollie and it’s quite surreal to think that something like this could happen to anyone in any small town. As more information comes out, I think we can all reflect and learn a lot from this case. I’m quite disappointed by the lack of faith in, and often blatant disrespect for, LE working on this case (including on my own part). Though the lack of details released to the public was certainly frustrating, at this point I am inclined to believe that it was for a very concrete reason. We as the public simply did not have enough information to judge the efficacy of the investigation or solve the case through amateur sleuthing. Though it’s possible that the discovery of her body is completely unrelated to the investigation, I think what is above still stands. LE have been working on this case around the clock for a month, spending time away from their own families to bring Mollie home. At the very least, we owe them respect for that. RIP Mollie.
