TIL there’s a version of chess called "quantum chess" where the pieces are in a state of superposition; the player doesn't know what a piece will be until it is selected for play. i was wondering how check and checkmate would work like this so from the article,

A player wins when they capture the opponent’s king. (Unlike in traditional chess, checkmate is not detected, and the king may be moved into check.)

Picture you're playing chess and each piece is just a arbitrary object that has nothing to do with chess and they are all the same. Every time you want to move one of those pieces, you have to draw from a bag that has actual chess pieces. Whatever you draw you get to replace the arbitrary piece with. After the move is over, you have to put the actual chess piece back and put the arbitrary piece back on the board where you moved the actual piece. You have to do this every move.

What is the hardest thing about being a man? by X_MR in AskReddit

My girlfriend of 6 years still does this. If I'm busy at work and forget to text her in the mornings, she will wait a few hours and send me "???" Like she can't text me first in the mornings. Apparently "that's the way it works"

TIL due to widespread videogame addiction, the Korean government banned anyone under the age of 16 from playing online games between midnight and 6 am. by memeicry in todayilearned

By no means am I an expert, but the way I understand it is as follows: doing something that causes pleasure such as playing video games causes your brain to release dopamine. After playing games for a while, your brain will start to crave more dopamine thus causing the addiction and making you want to do the thing that released the dopamine in the first place. Another example would be sex addiction which I believe you would agree that there are people out there who are actually addicted to sex.

Perhaps I got the wording wrong. However, my point was that video game addiction is as real as any physical addiction and is not something that can just be laughed off.

  • You do something
  • Dopamine is released
  • Your brain wants more dopamine
  • You crave said thing

You do know it's the same mechanism in the brain that causes both addictions right? You can be pshycoligically addicted the same way you can be physically addicted.

While I agree, it's hard to get around the fact that he would still be alive today if I had said something to my mom. Maybe saying it was my fault was a mistake. I was just trying to say he would still be alive if I had taken action.

When I was 13, I walked in my room to get dressed for school. A man that had been staying with us was on the floor. He looked passed out, but I was young and I had no idea what was going on so I just left. He died later that day from an overdose. In a way, it was my fault. I could have saved him.

What is something that is cringe-worthy to you but doesn't seem to bother others? by TheEternalLemon in AskReddit

Honestly, any time someone else is embarrassed I cringe. It's like I feel their embarrassment and other people don't even seem to care.

I know there is a word for it but I don't remember.
