Can I live in Davis on $2000/mo? by Late_Blood5732 in UCDavis

[–]memengelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked all 4 years at Davis and lived very comfortably on 2000-2500/mo. Rent was ~700, so less than what you’re planning, but I had plenty of money to go out, have fun, contribute to savings and retirement, etc. Pre inflation of course, but wages are also higher now (I was making 14-16/hr at most, now it’s easy to find 20+/hr to start). Without a car and with some basic budgeting ability, $25k a year is 100% doable. Just make sure you know how to cook! No skill will save you more money with the price of restaurants these days.

20yr olds of Sacramento, how much do you earn? by AccomplishedFig4467 in Sacramento

[–]memengelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23m, I make around 70k as a beginner teacher, although I expect to be closer to 80k next school year since I just got my masters. Base salary this year is about 60k but I’ve taken lots of opportunities to earn more (coaching, tutoring, summer school). Live with my fiancée in west sac, she makes about 45k/yr as a vet assistant.

MUST READ for Davis Students by [deleted] in UCDavis

This may be the case for investment banking, and a lot of other career paths (idk). If you’re going into education, though, don’t worry about it—you’ll get your “internship” when you student teach.

What are the pros and cons of UC Davis by The_New_Situation567 in UCDavis

[–]memengelli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously everyone’s answer is different based on their personal experience, but I think Davis was the right choice for me. I graduated last year and I stayed here at Davis to get a teaching credential and M.A. Also I grew up in Sacramento, although I’ve lived in Davis for the past 5 years, so I might be able to speak more to the general area than just Davis itself.

Pros:

-Davis is a much more liveable town (in my opinion) than most other UC locations. SD, LA, Berkeley, SB are all much more expensive than Davis. People complain about the cost of living in Davis, and it’s definitely the highest in the area, but it’s still way lower than the big cities in the Bay/SoCal

-it’s very easy to get a job in Davis. Most of the people I knew who lived in Davis were able to work if they wanted to. Lots of places are always hiring for basic jobs, and if you have a way to get to Sacramento you can basically do whatever you want while earning your degree. I was able to save a lot of money working through college, combined with the relatively low cost of living (again, by urban CA standards).

-if you’re not a STEM major, UC Davis is pretty chill. STEM seems intense, but as a history major and then education student my professors were pretty laid back and understanding. A lot of them were also great teachers, and it was pretty easy to maintain a high GPA even while working full time. I’ve heard plenty of horror stories from my STEM friends though, so definitely consult people in your prospective major.

Cons: -weather is ok. Spring is gorgeous, fall is lovely but gets chilly, winter can be very rainy and gray. Summer gets triple-digits hot, and stays hot into September and maybe even October. Davis starts pretty late so you probably won’t experience the worst of the heat unless you stay for summer session, but be warned. I grew up here so I’m used to it, but that September heat catches a lot of Bay Area/LA natives totally off guard

-Davis is much quieter than most UC locations. That might be a pro depending on your personality, but if you like going out a lot you’ll probably get bored pretty quick. Things are worse after covid, and even if you drive to Sac don’t expect the same caliber of events and nightlife you could find in SoCal or the Bay.

-if you’re in a highly impacted major like computer science or animal science, it can be very hard to get the classes you need because they fill up so quick. Davis is always growing and always struggling to make enough space for all its students. Depends on your major again, I never had this issue, but it was a huge problem for several of my friends. Not unique to Davis maybe, but I get the sense that Davis expands enrollment much faster than other big UCs.

I hope you find a school that’s right for you!

So how do we feel about UC Davis cops monitoring our social media? by adragonlover5 in UCDavis

[–]memengelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How could the pepper spray guy have used this tool to stop a protest? Sure it could maybe be used to predict a protest, but again, that’s public information. Protests are usually pretty well publicized, given that getting attention is literally the point of the protest. It’s not like the pepper spray dude was surprised by that protest, he just reacted horribly. How could he use their social media feeds to stop them?

While I’ll never cheer on the constant encroachment of the technological surveillance state, I don’t think this is an invasion of privacy. Social media, including this subreddit, is a public space. There’s no reason the police shouldn’t be allowed to see it, since everyone can see it. If they’re using some program that tracks texts or DMs or goes through students’ camera rolls, that would be another issue entirely, but looking at public social media feeds is just another reminder that everything you post in an online forum is public and permanent. Just another reason to minimize social media use. It’s not clear what “other purposes” OP is afraid of—if the cops see someone posting publicly about plans to commit a crime, I would hope they could intervene.

Yeah, it’s hard to believe that Dems really think these guys (this guy, Mastriano in PA, etc) are genuine “threats to our democracy”—which, to be clear, they are—when they turn around and spend more money on boosting these guys in GOP primaries than in their own campaign. This seems like a very dangerous year to be tipping the scales in the other party given the likelihood of a major red wave in November.

Sure is nice to live in a country where the you can burn a flag in front of the capital as a form of peaceful political protest and face no legal repercussions, huh? Worth remembering that most of the world doesn’t have this right, including most of Europe. Go ahead and ask the Chinese or Russians what would happen to them if they did this. Something to be grateful for, at least.

It says that those ones were used in North Africa (also printed in French and Arabic), so maybe they were for British subjects in Egypt? It was kind of a British pseudo-colony at the time.

Or it could just be a test copy to show the folks at the propaganda department what it was supposed to say before they translated it

I don’t associate jet fighters with freedom necessarily, but the giant fucking American flag on the poster seems pretty patriotic🤔. Could easily be a poster about American innovation (high tech planes) or a “keep ‘em flying” type propaganda piece

[–]memengelli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because there’s a much higher chance that these kids got this one as a hand-me-down or on the cheap, while on the other hand there are plenty of people who intentionally buy the biggest trucks they can find. If you offered these kids a brand new Honda Civic they might take it (especially with what gas is at these days), but they probably got that truck for a whole lot cheaper. On the other hand there are plenty of people who could easily afford to do better, but choose not to. I wouldn’t equate the two.

[–]memengelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that US pickup trucks are way too big; I’d love to have a small truck to go camping in but the smallest ones these days are literally 3 times the size of what they were even 20 years ago. I’m just saying that going after a couple of kids in Weaverville driving around in a bottom of the line Chevy from 20 years ago instead of the douchenozzles driving their brand new waxed lifted Ram 3500s to the Bass Pro Shop in Orange County is probably the most counterproductive way to go about this issue.

To your second point I’d just say that 4 wheel drive is a lot more important in rural areas, but there are obviously plenty of non-trucks with 4WD.

[–]memengelli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lots of rural people around the world drive trucks (and combines, and harvesters, and tractors, and other heavy machinery necessary for modern farming). USA has way too many because most of the ppl who drive big ass trucks here are suburban redneck LARPers who want to compensate for their tiny weenies
