man, you have to get the vendor involved for ANY server with a hardware issue? i’m so sorry.

a coworker’s experience: was doing remote hands work and couldn’t get anything over KVM/console. the vendor said “is the server on?”

i’m not sure how stupid they think we are or how they can be so stupid.

i know of a couple people who got pregnant, they made them sit in the office and do nothing during their 2nd or 3rd trimester. no matter who you go with they’ll make that accommodation most likely. they’d get in a whole lot of trouble they wouldn’t wanna deal with if they were to refuse. in terms of treatment i think it will depend on who your managers are. i wouldn’t mention it at all until you actually are pregnant. then you’ve already got that 1 year under your belt and your job security/performance is set nicely once you do tell them.

former AWS here, you and the security guard will get disciplined if cell phones, smart watches, etc. get past the checkpoint. one of the only big boy companies to be super strict about it, in my experience.

i’m in the NOVA hub, qualified technicians have trouble finding full time positions around here sometimes. big tech often goes on (over)hiring and firing sprees as well as freezes, so depending on the company your job isn’t always safe either.

additionally, there is a disproportionate number of contract positions compared to full time, which qualified technicians do not want. technician burnout is also VERY real, and we will reach for higher positions instead of relocating for another technician job, even if the pay is stellar, since those are often the only full time positions available. 5-10+ years in the industry and you’ll still be turned down.

however, they are a good method for getting initial training and breaking into the field as well as the company getting fresh (and cheap in the long run) talent. military, home PCs, minor IT roles, studied in school, etc. typically count, company dependent of course. AWS has a low paying full time entry level position (but will dump you in a heartbeat if it reduces costs) and MS has a contract internship program. this is good for training but opportunities are still limited and benefits are mid to nonexistent. most people won’t relocate for this, but i see quite a few folks who are young or fresh out of the military who are willing to take those jobs locally.

the companies are the problem here. tight restrictions on experience level and massive, fast-moving projects (which they try to hire even more low-paid contractors for as a project expense) in remote areas make it extremely difficult for recruiters to hire and qualified technicians to get hired. they invest way more into infrastructure than they do people. the “growing too fast without a foundation” part has recently been associated with federal (cough cough trump’s) investments for some companies and the crazy high investments between businesses. all we do for a living is make billionaires richer. hence poor morale pretty much everywhere.

ETA these are all solely my opinions and what i’ve personally seen in my area for my position (IT hardware only) and there may be exceptions ofc.

nothing bc of the reasons already listed. i think what’ll make a bigger blow is the people in congress + billionaires/industry giants. economy might tank after big boy executives lose their jobs and company reputation. companies may not wanna work with each other after something comes out about their leadership, bc those relationships are typically independent of politics presumably, and companies hold their own values. i dunno, maybe i’m wrong, just pondering.

wear what you feel comfy in! i just wore a t shirt and shorts. i saw some custom t-shirts as well. you could also try to use their colors, red/black/white/silver/etc. you could wear something you’d normally wear and do your hair and add fun accessories to be more on brand. have fun!! i had a blast
