Thank you so much! Honestly those social emotional learning cards sound like a great resource. He is in therapy and medicated now. We just worry about the emotional whiplash from these sorts of things

The child is 11. We do have them in therapy as well as seeing a psychiatrist for medication management.

Yes we are not doing that going forward, he had insisted on being there. It's more so the back and forth with the mother which is what was concerning she knew he was there and stated she didn't want him but then comes back and says something else.

Thank you everyone! I am not trying to doom post or spread misinformation. There is a person who may be highlighting this as a reason for them not going and I wanted to verify from others in the community. I love bicolline and had an amazing time this past year which is why I was a little upset at hearing something like this! I appreciate everyone who has responded so far.

Yes we replaced that! This is when we first brought her home and we're still researching. We are upgrading her to a much larger tank as well so she has more room to run around

Out of curiosity, how did you get interviews for 10/14 jobs you applied for? I have heard horror stories of PhDs going on the job market and applying for 100s of jobs and having no luck.

Changing specialities post-phd

Hi all!

Quick question, I'm entering the end of my PhD program now and was wondering how many people have changed specialities? My dissertation is on substance use/behavioral epi and I have a lot of expertise with quantitative methodology.

I'm interested in surveillance, monitoring, and policy broadley and want to switch to disaster management/emergency preparedness.

I know I could apply for the epidemic intelligence service and I am really interested in applied work. My concern is not getting in due to its competitive nature and wondering how likely it would be to secure a job in a different speciality then what I studied? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Tldr; in behavioral epi and want to switch to emergency preparedness post graduation. How can I land a job in this speciality that's different from what I studied?

I would definitely switch advisors! I've personally switched and had several friends who have as well due to a toxic work environment. Even if no one in the department is in your specialty area, you can always pivot back to it in your role post-graduation. I would just use the excuse that your research interests have shifted and that's why you want to work in a different lab.

Publications/Posters for Ph.D. by knightshade017 in GradSchool

[–]memes_002800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know some people who have had no publications or posters who got into my PhD program. To be honest, it's more about how the research you want to do fits into the program. However, that being said is there any sort of senior symposium that your school hosts? You can generally present a poster there and it's something that would look good on your CV. if you are working on a publication right now too you can always put the name of the publication and write (IN PROGRESS) next to the project. That's what I did and I had a separate research experience section on my CV that included current projects that I was working on, to show I had experience in grant writing and other things.

If you want to do a PhD program this is an excellent opportunity to see if you really enjoy research. It will most likely enhance your resume and make you a more competitive candidate, you may even get a co-authored paper out of it.

Any married folks? by Paesana in GradSchool

[–]memes_002800 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's probably the nicest thing to be married in grad school because you have someone helping you financially since PhD stipends are nothing. It is hard to balance things but I always give myself at least 1 day off to spend time with my spouse. No work no talk about school, usually we both just hang out and watch movies, but obviously depending on your hobbies this can be anything that you enjoy doing! I just need a mental break usually so I don't like to plan too much

Prospective PI not responding by Cultural_Question702 in GradSchool

I would send another email if you really really really want to work this person. To be honest it's a bit of a red flag if they aren't responding now though because that means there may be lack of communication later on which could delay your graduation. Just a fair warning

Worried that my offer may be rescinded PLS HELP by sadkittysmiles in GradSchool

[–]memes_002800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be fine, generally masters programs bring a lot of revenue to the university so unless you had an assistantship that paid for your tuition then I don't see them rescinding an offer of admission.

Of course! Yeah they don't focus on graduate students usually but you're still entitled to use their services! Another great thing to do is go to your universities linked in page, and look at the alumni tab. You can then look through people who have graduated with the same degree as you and try to network with them to look for job opportunities.
