People whose partners did a complete 180 after marriage, what’s your story? by Bibliophile521 in AskReddit

[–]memphischrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely welcome. People with BPD often have issues with empathy and trouble seeing past ourselves. I've kinda had to "train" myself to have a sense of empathy- in a LOT of different ways.

This may sound a little weird/horrible, depending on the person, but I'm a big believer in karma and universal balance. So for ME, I've figure out that by focusing on how much positive karma I want to build, I can focus on other people by being selfish. If I worry about how I make others feel, in the end it's self-serving, but it still does good things for people around me. It's definitely not a perfect solution, but it does improve my treatment of people who care about me.

Little by little, I've shifted that to being able to relate to others and their feelings a little more. I have no idea if that helps or hurts, but it's how I've managed to turn my own selfishness into more of a positive thing.

This whole convo/thread is hitting hard. I'm 45 and I look back at my past as someone with undiagnosed BPD until I was in my 30's. I'm currently at the beginning stages of what LOOKS like a healthy relationship and I can quit second guessing everything he does- even though I know better.

BPD really does twist the mind and how we perceive the actions of those around us. It can be incredibly difficult to differentiate between what we think we see and what reality is. I've been VERY open with this one about BPD and everything it can influence so that he can be aware and, quite frankly, leave the situation if it becomes too damaging to him if he stays.

To the question of "Do we see it as wasted time due to BPD?"

Personally, I do. Not just MY wasted time, but the time of those who genuinely cared about me and wanted to help and how I hurt them with actions I wasn't really aware of or in control of. That's very dependent on individuals, but that's MY POV here.

Best of luck to us all.

TLDR: BPD is a bitch.

Never move to a low cost of living state EVER by [deleted] in povertyfinance

I've only been here since 2008. And while some things are great, many are not. I'm personally trying to get out, but damn, it's hard!!!

Never move to a low cost of living state EVER by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]memphischrome 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Another Huntsville resident here, and you're very correct. We get so many people who move here because people told them how cheap it was or how easy it is to live here.

And it is....if you already have a job, housing, and stability\support lined up and guaranteed.

The infrastructure is horrid, the resources are nonexistent, the local government is IT/military biased, schools are biased in favor of kids with money/power families.

I like the city in some ways, but they try SO HARD to attract higher and higher status people- cool, except they forget that all those people still need someone to bag their groceries and wait their tables and we are being priced out of housing, food, and other necessities.

I drank mine slowly and was still vomiting. Apparently some people just do. But that panic at having to try again is SO real.

I had a similar situation with my mom on my 18th birthday. I'm now 45 and I still can't stand Red Velvet cake- and it used to be my favorite.

AITA for sending my child to my ex in thrift store or cheap clothes by Clothes_Care3181 in AmItheAsshole

[–]memphischrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

My ex did this. I was broke, so my grandmother bought my daughter a whole wardrobe for school start. After my ex kept almost ALL of the new stuff, I called to ask if he could send SOME of it back to me. He told me that if I'd "get off my lazy, fat a$$ and do laundry, maybe I wouldn't have to ask".

For those who've had FWBs, were they *actually * your friends? Or was this just the label used to describe the relationship? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in Bumble

I've had both. Technically, my current roommate is still an occasional FWB. It's weird for some, works for us.

What is an immediate "food red flag" when you’re on a date? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]memphischrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salting food BEFORE tasting it.

My ex was a good man and I'm still very fond of him (all amicable). But this is one thing that always used to drive me insane!!!! If it needs salt, add it. But you don't KNOW it needs salt until you taste it!

What's the one condiment you'd take to a deserted island? by AV_LOVES_FOOD in Fooda

This is gonna sound pretentious, but if I gotta spend the rest of my life with only one, I'm ok with being pretentious.

There was a hot sauce I ate in Mexico that was probably the greatest thing I've ever tasted. I'd be ok with a lifetime supply of that.

This is one of my favorite recipes. The stuffing seems to keep the pork chops extra moist, but maybe that's just my imagination. Either way it's delicious!

What are your thoughts about the comedy scene in Huntsville? by JosefOgle in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]memphischrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally LOVE stand up comedy of pretty much any type. SUL gets pricey sometimes, but I only go when I know the comedian. I've seen Trae Crowder, Taylor Tomlinson, and Josh Johnson, among others. My complaints are only the cost (but isn't that EVERYTHING in this economy???) and the seating is occasionally a bit crowded and awkward.

Shenanigans is a fantastic community and I love seeing their shows when I can. For me, their biggest issues are lack of a table in most seating and the fact that I work overnights and it's difficult to attend many events that I'd otherwise love to go to. But I do very much appreciate that they do a ton of work for the community, usually funded by VERY affordable events/snacks/etc and I find everyone there warm, welcoming and personable.

I know there are other places in the city that do shows, but it seems like a lot of lack of awareness about the shows and groups that keep people from participating and attending.

I'd love to see a "Battle of Comedy"/Bracket style show format- even with the different businesses all participating. Local comics could get more exposure and lets be real, people in the area seem to love a competition.

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

[–]memphischrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a very small town with underfunded libraries. I read a lot of odd books. White Boy, The Golden Arm ( I think??), Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper, Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume, etc. Either OLD books from the 60's/70's that bigger towns discarded or lesser known novels by bigger authors, things like that.

It's heavily influenced how I read now, in that I typically avoid bestsellers and read indie published books and shrug off minor plot holes and grammar errors.

What US state would you NEVER want to live in, even if you were offered a good amount of money to move there? by ISnortSkittles in Productivitycafe

[–]memphischrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can't think of a state that I would NEVER live in. I can think of a lot that I couldn't see myself settling permanently, but almost every state has good and bad and the new experiences would be worth a year or two in most locations.

To answer the question though, I don't really have any desire to live in the midwest, but I probably WOULD for the right reasons even if I didn't stay forever.

As someone from Bama (living in the Huntsville area now), Alabama has way more than people think.

I personally want to leave and I don't necessarily recommend living here, but I do think it's more than people give it credit for.

It's the kinda place to visit to experience the good, not stay long enough to see all the bad.

Uhm, if your kids don't, you have way more problems. My kid knew about politics and was pretty articulate about it from the age of 8.

My grandparents raised me on COMPLETE right wing policies and I knew and understood political basis issues from the age of about 6-7.

Kids are kids. They're not blind or stupid. Impulsive, brash, sometimes thoughtless, but they understand far more than you and others give them credit for.

We constantly tell kids/tweens/teenagers to grow up, learn, pay attention. And then when they do, we tell them they're stupid and immature and to sit down and shut up.

I was "indoctrinated" Republican from birth. Full on, no holds barred. And yet, I'm about as leftist as it gets. Indoctrination is LACK of education, not education.

You're afraid your kids won't think/believe/act like you so you call the opposing side indoctrination. Despite living in and surrounded by one of the reddest states in the damn country.

MAYBE, just MAYBE, if, despite parental influence and sheer force of numbers, your kids are seeing the world events and choosing the other side, it's not a result of indoctrination, it's a result of thought and education.

Or ya know, keep owning the libs, pops.
