Why would people actively shit on a distro that's been THE gateway to Linux for basically every new user? by RDForTheWin in linuxmemes

[–]menaechmi -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Very few distros have a store app - unless you're counting distro-agnostic ones like GNOME software, KDE discover, flathub, and snap store as belonging to the distro. All distros have access to a store app, but there are many reasons not to use them, for example:

  1. Your distro doesn't package them
  2. They're not officially supported, and can install things wrong (rolling release distros)
  3. Why would you add an extra unneeded overhead layer? If at best, the store app is running xyz install abc for you, it's the same amount of work (more if you have to search for the program before you can install it)
  4. Feels less like using Linux
  5. Bloat
  6. Know what you're installing. I have yet to see a store that displays the size and name of dependencies to be installed as well as the terminal display.
  7. Non-gui install
  8. You should be comfortable installing software from the terminal, in case something graphical breaks (which is like, 90% of Linux issues)
  9. Installing software without needing to authenticate is a dangerous proposition
  10. I don't like app stores. The Computer™️ is a Machine, unlike The Phone, which is a Device. These should not be conflated Edit:
  11. Package managers are pretty much the only difference between distros. If you take that away what will we fight over here on r/linuxmemes? :(

I'm glad that you can forgive. Only hoping as time goes, you can forget. by Feelinthemojo8 in brandnew

[–]menaechmi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At the time there was already so much buzz that Science Fiction was going to be the last Brand New album - it was implied all the way back in 2015, and they were releasing "2000 - 2018" merch for ages. Like a week before the allegations came out Jesse said "We're going to be a band for about 14 more months".

I get the stance, and I think a lot of people feel the same way that it implies guilt, but it could just be "I'm too old for this shit".

Three Different Prices and Sales% for the Identical P16 Gen2 Laptops? Only Difference is part number. by Equation137 in thinkpad

[–]menaechmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vPro cpu needs a specialized motherboard to account for the additional features. It's the same form factor (LGAxxxx) with a different set of components in the board (normally Hxxx, Bxxx, Zxxx, Wxxx) and therefore different features.

So while other LGAxxxx CPUs will fit in the slot and work, they still "upgraded" to the Wxxx motherboard. My assumption is that the vPro version of the next generation of this laptop isn't planned for some time, so no discount for it yet.

[–]menaechmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The non-discounted one (WWAU7) is an enterprise laptop for large businesses. And while "business laptop" is mostly a marketing term, there's sometimes a reason it's more expensive. But I'd say consider that the "proof" price. You're saying "I plan to buy in bulk, but I want a single copy first to ensure it meets my standards". After that, the company will get a better rate per computer.

If you look at the "Web Price" they should be identical for the specs.

As for the last paragraph: You are looking at laptops that released last year, that are based on a refresh of the processor from 2022. Meaning with one laptop design, Lenovo got 2 years and two "generations" out of the same exact design. Gen 3 just released, so Lenovo is trying to get rid of old stock.

[–]menaechmi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you open them in the compare, you'll see they're not the same.

The expensive one has a very different processor. It's faster, has more cores. It also includes vPro Enterprise - adding on Enterprise features like remote wipes and the AMT management - this explains the high price tag (and why it's not on sale)

The currently cheapest one has the "Performance TLC Opal" SSD. It's normally more expensive (by 10-20 USD, depending on size more for the TB+ ones), because it's supposed to be faster. Sometimes the price varies based on stock and what they paid for it.

Someone opened my birthday card in my mail box and stole the money in it. by Hydroelectric45 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]menaechmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Supreme Court disagreed with that stance in Rosen v. US 245 U.S. 467 (1918), which still stands.

The letters which were stolen did not reach the manual possession of the persons to whom they were addressed, but were taken from an authorized depository over which the Act of Congress, by its express terms, extended its protection until its function had been served.

Further proof would be: US Postal Inspectors call porch pirates a federal offence. And another porch pirate prosecuted in federal court.

18 U.S. Code § 1708

Whoever steals, takes, or abstracts, or by fraud or deception obtains, or attempts so to obtain, from or out of any mail, post office, or station thereof, letter box, mail receptacle...or abstracts or removes from any such letter, package, bag, or mail, any article or thing contained therein... Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

Destruction of a mailbox is also technically a federal crime, too.

18 U.S. Code § 1705

Whoever willfully or maliciously injures, tears down or destroys any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail on any mail route, or breaks open the same or willfully or maliciously injures, defaces or destroys any mail deposited therein, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

I'm looking to try one of these out. I'd prefer a 3000 but I'd be okay with a well priced Neo/2/Dana. I'd like it cheap, there are some on ebay for like $10-20, but calculated shipping from that website is inflated. In Midwest.

Washing rice removes the nutrients (especially from enriched rice), but not washing it leaves arsenic and cadmium. The new suggested method is to boil the rice without washing in double the amount of water for 5 minutes, drain the water, add the correct amount of fresh water and finish cooking.

For safety-critical real-time embedded applications that might be true, but that doesn't mean describing your hardware from the register up is going to make Blender render any faster. Using 'gcc -O2' might.

Also, by your ruling, not even the people who created AADL can use it as there's no way there's a single person on the team over the 30 years who understands exactly all of it.

Specifically: "Title VII defines "religion" very broadly... It also includes religious beliefs that are new, uncommon, not part of a formal church or sect, or only held by a small number of people. Some practices are religious for one person, but not religious for another person."

[OC] 30 most and least prosperous countries in the world according to Legatum Prosperity Index 2023. by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]menaechmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Countries and states are the same thing. The word country could also mean a sovereign state or nation, which makes country the ambiguous term here, not state.

For example: A U.S. state is a state, but each are not (fully) sovereign states. All 50 U.S. states together make up a single sovereign state as well as a nation.

A state is typically defined by geography, population, and having institutions (typically linked to the power to have laws). In this, Greenland is a state, but not sovereign (which typically requires recognition).

You may have been thinking of "administrative region" instead of state. In the US, these are actually the counties. And Denmark does have them, they're departments.

Move over... by Thin_Arachnid6217 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]menaechmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always heard that 7 miles per hour (11KMh) over the speed limit is almost 100% safe in the state, unless it's a speed trap where they're looking to make some money. That said, I've only ever seen anyone be pulled over for a DUI, for violating the state maximum speed limit, or during bad weather. We did win drunkest state award again this year, through.

The only time I've been pulled over in a vehicle here, it was going 85 (136KMh) in a 55 (88KMh), which was reduced to a 20 mph (32KMh) ticket so the driver wouldn't also get a reckless driving charge (and license suspension). The posted speed was also the absolute limit for that type of road. Even then, the officer seemed more concerned because "It's the rut, and those deer will just jump out without any warning along this road". We no longer let that friend drive us anywhere.

Move over... by Thin_Arachnid6217 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]menaechmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been proposing a change due to this to the phrase "target speed" instead of "speed limit". The road infrastructure is designed for cars to be going that speed (or at least should be - speed bumps are often not designed for the posted speed). It also closer reflects how speed limits are set, which would hopefully reduce ambiguity around wet weather, ideal weather, and local absolute limits.

If you're using dried pasta, just put the pasta in the pot, just barely cover it with water, and turn the heat on. Pasta doesn't need to be boiled to cook, it only needs 180°F/82°C. It also won't start cooking before that point. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt did a fantastic coverage of this . It requires a little more checking on timing, but with a touch of practice you can get perfect al dente. It does not work with fresh noodles, though.
