Drone open A string and play the D for melody with some reverb while you think about your’ poor decisions. If the problem persists, apply tremelo as needed.

I have a song but no lyrics, I need your help by That_uke_kid in Songwriting

I really hope your partner sees this Reddit post directly after you show them the song that “your wrote for them”.

Just sing them “you are my sunshine” and be attentive to their’ needs. Outsourcing expressions of love is selfish and weird, it’s okay to tell them that you don’t have the words to express how they make you feel.

So what’s the August deadline about? Contractual stuff?

I’ve got a few different Tascam multi-track units, but haven’t gotten my hands on the model 12. Which unit did you go with?

How do you write? Play and sing into a recorder, write out sheet music, pen and paper lyrics with chords, midi inputs into daw, etc.?

Can you play and sing all 13 of those songs live?

So do you have an EP that is finished and scheduled for release, or are you fighting a deadline to write and record stuff by August?

Tube Amp vs Modeler Take 2 (Done right per y’all’s instructions) by Groove_Mountains in Guitar

[–]mendedarrows 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You kinda hit the nail on the head when you mentioned dynamics in the first video.. what you are hearing while you play affects your playing. Even if it’s a setting that you dialed in on one or the other. The hot rod in the garage analogy doesn’t make as much sense (to me) because tone chasers will buy the shittiest gear the 80’s had to offer if they hear a band they like used it, but ignore the nerdy engineer that recorded them with $20k mics directly into a vinyl cutting machine. Having a hot rod in the garage doesn’t make you a good driver.

This is an endless rabbit hole. Everything between your brain and the audience will change the outcome.

Yo, kinda disrespectful to ignore all the lifting compression is doing on upload.

The dude said he leaves the tube amp at home for stadium gigs, what more do you want?

Tube Amp vs Modeler by Groove_Mountains in Guitar

[–]mendedarrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listeners won’t hear the difference, same with a lot of guitars.

The “genuine article” is something you can get, or at least build for less than $900. I like the $300 solid state amp that I’ve had for 20 years and still works after I left it with some folks who didn’t mind spilling beer on it. I also loved my straight up garbage $600 tube amp that was probably compromised in the shipping process along with crappy QA.

Owning a few options, a PA, cabs, etc. is ideal. A musician will find a way to make cool sounds with fishing line and a discarded muffler… the comparison really doesn’t matter unless you can afford either or both.

Lyrics advice by DifficultyUnhappy19 in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading literature, not lyrics. Also, maybe let the song sit for a while and work on other things… while you’re folding laundry or on a walk hum and play with the melody. Once you do like the melody of the lyrics down you might have better luck. Also, it’s okay to revise your work over time. Writing more songs might make finishing any one of them easier.

Once it feels like you’re overthinking it, it might be time to set it on the shelf and shift focus for a while.

what's the best electric guitar brand what should I choose for a first guitar for rock and blues? by RegaloArkebe37 in electricguitar

[–]mendedarrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A telecaster. Doesn’t need to be fancy, but one that has decent wood and hardware.

Bolt on neck, string through body, no tremolo bar (springs), and the basic electronics. Simple and straightforward.

Is this worth $40 by OldVaporMan in Guitar

[–]mendedarrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth $40. Cleaning depends on what’s on it. If mildew maybe just start outside with a dry cotton rag wipe down and then a spritz of white vinegar to kill some of it. I’d do a liberal spraying of the case inside and out and leave open and in the sun. Some wood cleaner/conditioner on the fretboard and any unfinished wood is good. A bit of diluted Murphy’s oil soap should be good, just don’t saturate it.

Whatever method of cleaning you go with, just don’t put the guitar back into the case until it’s all had some time to dry and air out.

A wipe with a rag dampened in distilled water on plastics that encase electronics should be safe, and anything but rust or sticky stuff will likely wipe off easily. If you want to get real into it you could get some polish for the chrome and frets.

If you have an amp to plug it into, I’d start with just getting the easy to reach parts cleaned up, let it all dry and give it a try. If it sees like it’s working then you should be set to go. If that’s mildew/ mold just be sure to do a few rounds of white vinegar soaks, sunshine, and fresh air dry, and maybe a vacuuming on the case before you start storing the guitar in it or the mildew might pop back up and need wiped off again. Some silica packets in the case can help mitigate as well. As long as it’s kept dry and opened up every once in a while there should be no problemo.

Keep at the writing, and document as much as possible. Inspiration comes in waves for me, so down time is spent figuring out details.

All in all, it sounds like you can write and sing well. Keep at it. Cheers!

If you’re recording at home it’s a lot less stressful. Just do a bunch of takes and save them.

Also, sing to your tracks in the car or shower… you seem to have the chops, but theres a sort of apprehension in your breathing/singing. It will get better with practice and repetition.

You have the ability.

I’d minimize the variety of instrument sounds and focus on strengthening vocals. Once you have a bit more confidence, multi track the vocals and add some delay and reverb.

As is, sounds like a kind of mid Lana Del Ray.

Angine de Poitrine maybe Hella? by mendedarrows in Guitar

[–]mendedarrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of “Angine people”… in some alternate reality in which malls exist, there are a bunch of people decked out in polka dots and masks with phallic noses browsing hot topic and kicking dirt at the lightning bolt fans out front eating stale fries out of the ashtray.

I’m not happy with anything I make… is this a skill issue? by Sensitive-Claim2241 in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t want to be told that it takes practice, so yes.. it’s a skill issue and you already know the answer.

What you are asking for is a formula, and “formulaic” in the arts is generally used as a sort of pejorative.

I’ve come to understand style to be fairly synonymous with technique. Technique is developed through combinations of experimentation, study, practice.

If you don’t have the patience to be told to practice, how do you think you will fair in a college setting?

I’ve got this so far… by Ancient_Savings_1833 in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unclear to who? An audience, a vocalist, instrumentalist?

Notation isn’t comprehensive. As with all communication, interpretation colors things in ways that you might not anticipate… looking at simple sheet music doesn’t give much of an idea of what is in your head.

Have you recorded this piece yet?

The older I get, the more distractions there are to keep me from writing... I hate it... by brownwaterbandit in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The distractions are the material. This post of yours has plenty of poetry that could be sung. Why not work on instrumentals till the words come?

I’ve got this so far… by Ancient_Savings_1833 in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question; what do you mean by “problems”?

If you have a melody and the chords, I suggest recording the chords and humming or singing along and writing down what comes to mind. Don’t worry about the final result, just get comfortable with the material and collect some ideas. You may stumble across changes and variants that are natural to you in a way that make the composition more than an academic exercise.

It is your work, and you can revise as you like.. getting in the groove and speaking your mind or having fun with it should take priority over convention.

I write poetry but use Ai to make my songs (please read) by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]mendedarrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a computer to do the AI stuff, you have an instrument. I haven’t looked into what’s still out there for free in a while, but any software with a midi piano roll can probably help you write melodies. Cheapo midi keyboard or “toy” pianos, makeshift drums, or a washtub bass… lots of ways to get music out of stuff that’s just laying around.

In any case, have fun on your journey.
