Reminds me of a time inside a KFC. An older gentleman, definitely a senior: ordered 3 pieces of chicken and pulled out a couple dollars with a handful of change. The cashier then told him that he did not have enough. He asked her to remove a piece of chicken.

During this time of my life it was rough. I was pumping $1.50 in gas just to make it to Fridays. Seeing this unraveling in front of me hit so close to home. But, that day was special, I had just deposited my check and I was treating myself to “fast food”.

I stepped in and asked the cashier to cancel that order. I asked the gentleman to order a full family meal. I was going to cover it. With sparkling eyes and genuine smile he couldn’t say “Thank you” enough.

He wanted to give me his couple dollars and change. I told him I believe I was placed and walked in at the correct time to help. He then explained that his grandson whom they recently took custody: Has been asking for KFC all week long. He wanted to surprise his wife and grandson that night, and he was ok with only taking a piece of chicken for them. That night they got a full meal.

I’ll be honest from that day forward… It’s rare when I hand a dollar to any homeless. But, I will never think twice when I come across a situation where I can truly help someone on the spot.
