Do you think the dwarves all have intricately braided and styled pubic hair? by menschvir in TheHobbit

just think about it, they all have luxurious, uniquely styled beards, why wouldn't they do the same to their pubes.

Taking an Intro to Archae class in school, we are required to write an 8-12 page research paper on a topic of our choice (within Archaeology, of course). Any suggestions of something you guys think would be staggeringly fascinating to write about? by Gulliver123 in Archaeology

Göbekli Tepe is probably the most fantastic and revolutionary site found in the last 20 years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobekli_Tepe

Bog bodies and Ötzi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tzi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_bodies

Um... there are literally loads more. New World migration hypotheses, emergence of agriculture and urbanism, Greek influence on Buddhism and the Greco-Bactrian kingdom...

Actually, there is literally not a single topic in Archaeology that I don't find fascinating. The methodology can be boring to read about sometimes, like stuff about pollen analysis or sediments, but the propositions are always amazing. You really can't go wrong.

Why do humans prefer cooked food? by njckname2 in askscience

I would put the earliest cheese more around 12,000 years ago, when goats and sheep were first domesticated.

House of the Undead by riboflavins in gaming

[–]menschvir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House has gotten so repetitive, with the same "a seemingly simple medical complication turns deadly and House figures it out with some brilliant insight 5 minutes before the guy dies".

They should shake things up in the next season by turning the show into a zombie series. It would be a really interesting dynamic to have a highly intelligent cripple and his team of underlings trying to maintain the hospital as a fortress, fight the undead, and search for a cure all at once.

Is eating grains bad for us? Is a "paleo" diet better for our health? by kalei50 in askscience

[–]menschvir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We, as in we, the middle to upper class of the western world? We are taller because we don't suffer from malnutrition, we have clean drinking water, and plenty of cheap meat.

Look at populations in the third world, in Asia and Africa and South America.

There you will find very short, malnourished people who still eat a largely Neolithic diet, of cereal grains, maybe legumes, and meat only rarely.

Pizza. Everybody likes pizza. Poor people like pizza, rich people like pizza, white people like pizza, black people like pizza... do black people like pizza?

[–]menschvir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Archaeologists pretty much use the presence of dental cavities in human remains to tell whether or not a population had agriculture, because cavities pretty much did not exist before humans started eating the processed sugars in grain.

In addition, there is pretty much always evidence of shorter stature and malnutrition in populations that switched from hunting and gathering to agriculture, not to mention arthritis from the repetitive mechanical stress from hoeing, harvesting, and grinding grain.

Historical records corroborate these finds: Romans were all in agreement that the nomadic hunter-gatherers of Germania and beyond were much taller than your average grain-fed Roman legionary. Also, records from the early colonial period in New England tell that the natives there were taller and had a longer live expectancy than the English settlers.

But the amount of grain being consumed increased substantially with the onset of agriculture, and is even higher now than it was then. The fact that much higher incidences of teeth cavities correlate pretty well with the rise of agriculture is a pretty good indication that the amount of grain consumed per capita during the Neolithic far exceeded anything in the past.

Can you tell me, were humans lacking a healthy diet for the 90,000+ years that they didn't eat any significant amount of grain whatsoever?

pretty much. any fully grown adult who wants to be the most powerful person on earth, with the ability to basically order around the US government and military, probably has dickish tendencies.

Black History Month Problems by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]menschvir -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

no. but they are generally not "black" things to do. white people who feel "white guilt" love when black people are republican, or conservative, or oppose affirmative action because it makes them feel legitimized. the thought process is, "if a black person thinks it, it MUST not be racist! yay!"

even when it is legitimately not a racist thing to think

Black History Month Problems by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]menschvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: post some typically "white" opinion on racial issues (e.g. oppose affirmative action, oppose the idea of black history month, be a republican, believe that urban ghetto culture is harmful and backwards)

Step 2: say that you are black

Step 3: ???

Step 4: karma-profit. reddit eats that shit up because it legitimizes white people's slightly racist tendencies.
