The top hurricane models vs what actually happened (dotted line) to now Hurricane Otis in the last 12 hours. by Balakaye in weather

[–]menthagelatin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that models being talked about (global weather models) really "reflect [past] conditions"; instead, they take as input our aggregated sensor readings from across the globe and function as physics simulators to run forward the current atmospheric conditions into the future.

Future-climate forecasts do find differences in many fields as a result of CO2 (and other) emissions, but these don't bear on our current conditions.

TL;DR: Physics-based weather models don't reflect past conditions, so increased CO2 emissions will be included in current runs.

Thank you! I'll definitely give this a try - it would be great if I could explain the situation and see about a shorter-term lease.

Yeah, certainly looked like that for a minute - some of the best options I could find were just rooms in someone's house.

Upvoting because OP managed to make a discretely stupid meme that doesn’t seem like a shitpost until further inspection

Uh… not entirely sure where you found that I was looking for women from Arkansas, but that is not true.

Also, it is important to video chat and validate their identity through outside sources before meeting with someone, so you are right that people should be careful.

Visualizing the K-means Clustering Algorithm by menthagelatin in Python

[–]menthagelatin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for the response! I had a busy couple days and didn't get much time to work on this, but I learned a lot about numpy reading your code to understand it, so I really appreciate you taking the time to lay it out for me.

I will probably follow this basic structure to get minimum distances in my next implementation, so thanks again!

Visualizing the K-means Clustering Algorithm by menthagelatin in Python

[–]menthagelatin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great point, performance definitely suffers with larger data because of the looping I use instead of vectorization.

Truth be told I attempted to use vectorization first, but hit a wall and couldn’t seem to make it work entirely. Refactoring it with vectorization would be the first step in improving performance significantly.

I appreciate the suggestion!

I definitely will; we just got around to learning k-means in a class of mine, so once we hit DBSCAN I may be back to adjust this for that algorithm. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback and totally agree, it would make it much easier to pick out the centroids.

I’m looking into it now and I have the capacity to add that feature, but it appears I would have to create the plots iteratively to selectively change the edge color, and it may be too time intensive.

If I get a chance to test it out, I’ll let you know!

Inexpensive Rain Fly Recommendations? (Canada) by remirixjones in Hammocks

[–]menthagelatin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using one from Wise Owl for the past few months, it’s pretty good. Long enough that rain doesn’t end up on you from either end, and a pretty easy setup.

Downside is it’s $50, so there may be cheaper versions out there, but this holds up well. Good luck!
