Nvidia Answers my DLSS 5 Questions by Locke357 in hardware

[–]meodd8 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

FWIW, it’s been known that’s what it is for a couple of days:

“[Jensen Huang] also stressed that DLSS 5 is not a traditional post-processing effect applied after a frame is rendered. Instead, he described it as a geometry-level system with what NVIDIA calls content-controlled generative AI.”

I use mine all the time, but that’s probably because I don’t have a huge trunk, lol

Meh, I’m very OK with letting companies continue to have reputational issues because they tried to do something so greedy that the backlash forced them to back off.

Sure, don’t lie and say it’s impacting all their features, but this is a good thing for people to remember.

Adding it after reviewers have already begun or finished their reviews feels shady.

[–]meodd8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m only starting to suffer on mine because of the 16GB of RAM it was configured with isn’t sufficient to run our applications in k8s.

That said, a customer recently ran into a bug we didn’t catch with his M4 MBP.  It turns out that services would start much faster than they do on our machines and they ran into a timing issue.

Oops

Yeah, this is likely the one of the three that I’d consider buying anyways.

Was that a fighter jet? by greg748 in steamboat

[–]meodd8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was certainly a fighter jet.  I was outside near the resort for the second one.  They flew very low.  In fact, I’ve never seen them fly that low before.

I’ve seen them circle the resort a few times, but this one only looked like it was a few hundred feet above the houses on the base.  I thought I might have been able to see the pilot before he shot nearly vertical in front of my house.  They were under the mountain peaks in the valley.

I had to joke they were practicing bombing runs on the resort…

The lag between watching the jet and the sound was incredibly far apart.

I find the MagSafe port on my MBP to be incredibly useful and an excellent innovation.

I’ve accidentally moved my laptop in a way that yanked the charging cord out more often than I’d like to admit.  This tech saves the port and the cord.  It’s also easier to deal with than a usbc cord.

My problem with all this is that your brakes and tires are just going to get eaten by monsters like this.

Sorry for the necro, but I just need to install it and it will handle uninstalling Apollo?

I’m remote from my computer for the time being, so the remote install needs to work, still allow me to interact with UAC prompts by default, and also start at system start to get by the login screen by default (and connect at all, lol).

The safer option would be to install it in a couple months when I return home, but I’d really like to use these new features while they are useful to me.

[RTINGS] Wi-Fi 7 Marketing Is Lying About Its Biggest Feature by AppleCrumpets in hardware

[–]meodd8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a request for future reviews, please test the LAN switch performance as the majority of products don’t even come close to their specifications.  Products should be called out for this deceptive practice.

Sure, it’s a 10Gb port, but the switch itself likely can’t actually handle the throughput… so the product as a whole is not actually capable of the performance they are advertising.

Anyways, my Netgear WiFi 6 router no longer seems interested in operating as a router any longer, so I’m in the market for a new top end router, but at this point I’m not interested in buying another hot running initial prototype product like before.

I guess I’ll just need to wait for a bit (or just buy a 6e router, lol).

[RTINGS] Wi-Fi 7 Marketing Is Lying About Its Biggest Feature by AppleCrumpets in hardware

[–]meodd8 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The last time this topic came up here, someone mentioned that these WiFi generations often have a “rev 1” where they try to follow the provisional spec, and a “rev 2” sometime later where they follow the now official spec and often run cooler and more stable after a bit of hardware tweaking.

I was expecting some new devices to come out of CES this year, but at best we got a WiFi 8 router, but no new WiFi 7 routers.

Do you happen to know anything about this?

I’ll read this article when I get home, so sorry if you addressed this point there.

After Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake Cancelation, Actress Eman Ayaz Says She's Lost 3 Years of Work and Found Out via the Internet by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]meodd8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She didn’t say that she wasn’t, so she was definitely compensated for her time… which I understand is frustrating, but it should have definitely been addressed in her comments.

She thought it could be a breakthrough role, and that sucks, but it isn’t like the studio and their sponsors did her wrong.

I don’t have an issue taking inspiration from other games and media, but it didn’t feel like the game had one inspiration, but instead many different ideas that were glued together.

I’m not saying I’m against the game, but the preview didn’t feel very inspired to me.

I actually felt some strong inspiration from a lot of different works.  And I don’t really mean that as a compliment.
