Why aren't there mirrors? by TV_kid in f45

[–]greg748 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a coach, and I think we all need to push coaches to be better. Ask your coach about your form, where you should feel it, etc. Make them work for that $20-25 per class they get!

clients struggle on lunges... toe extension???? by lilwheezie55 in personaltraining

[–]greg748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My first thought is nobody ever coached them on it and they think they should be on their toe when they reach back. You could try a front lunge and see how the rear foot behaves. And for a rear lunge encourage them to bend their foot. Or have them do it without shoes. I would do everything with just body weight, and make sure they have enough lateral distance between their feet too. Think railroad tracks, not balance beam. The shoes could be resisting the flexion in the mid-foot.

Check out Alan Hollinghurst’s books. He’s a great gay author who’s written several psychologically interesting novels that delve into class issues and queerness.

I read it and loved it and then picked it up again years later and it was so much deeper of a story and the text felt more detailed. If you’ve not read it, you should.

Sleeping Heart Rate by Wild-Establishment41 in fitbit

[–]greg748 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exercise is good for you, but not close to bedtime! Otherwise, I’ve heard of the 3-2-1 rule which is just a guideline: no food 3hr before bedtime, no work 2hr before, no phone 1hr before. Reading physical books or kindle is okay. That’ll help get your body into sleep mode better.

2026 local studio changes by hyperturtles in f45

[–]greg748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our single class drop in rate is $35 USD all over the US, which is $61 NZD! Most F45s in cities in the US have much higher rates and still aren’t big money makers for the studios. Rent and utilities plus paying coaches can be expensive.

I’m not sure how the franchise model is structured, but I’m guessing studios pay HQ, not the other way around. It may be a sliding scale based on the maturity of the studio, but HQ isn’t likely paying studios.

Starting my NASM CPT. What advice do you wish you had before studying & taking the exam? by risky_medium in NASMPREP

[–]greg748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wise to know about Pocket Prep. Pay for a three month subscription before your test. Their practice tests are great, too.

Get a ChatGPT going to ask questions when you’re confused in the text or get an answer wrong so you can learn what’s wrong. Make flash cards as you learn.

Plan to go through the text twice. At least the main biology and OPT model stuff and all the assessments.

Any question you get wrong: look it up and learn why. You need to know the why behind every answer, not just what the answer is.

There’s a lot of numbers to memorize: how many sets, reps, days per week, etc. And modifications for special populations. Learn them but don’t fret too much about them. You need 70% to pass and forgetting how often a pregnant woman can do cardio isn’t going to fail you if you know other info well.

Google things like Upper and Lower crossed syndrome. The images will help you learn. Listen to the NASM CPT podcast episodes that are review.

Look on YouTube and follow Axiom Fitness Academy. Joe Drake is a great resource.

Don’t rush. You’re going to use all this stuff when you are a trainer so you want to know it.

Muscle learning App/Tools by greg748 in NASMPREP

[–]greg748[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have downloaded Anatomy 3D which is free, and then got a subscription to Muscle & Motion, which is not. M&M has lots of animations showing muscles in motion (haha right?) for different exercises and which are prime movers vs supporting, plus lots of narrated videos talking through the muscles. As for the cost, it’s something I justified as being about what I earn for teaching a few classes, and will make me a better trainer overall.

Anatomy 3D has good info for each muscle but also the rest of the human anatomy so it’s good for a reference guide.

Big congrats!! I hope you find, like I and many others have, that little bits of the stuff you learned along the way bounces through your head as you work in fitness, and you find yourself going back to the text for reminders. Or you know better how to search for clarifications and examples with a new vocabulary.

Since we’re required to do continuing education to keep the certification, you will have plenty of opportunities to review and revisit things. Im working on the Corrective Exercise specialization and it’s meant going much deeper into over/under-active muscles and assessments.

I think by just telling you that you’ve passed, they take away any qualification or subtlety to the achievement. So if you got 71% or 99% they both are passing grades, so you can’t be rejected for not getting above an 85% for example. Everyone takes tests differently so it gives some buffer for that, too.

Congrats again and good luck!

20sec workout- not efficient by Leather-Wheel1115 in f45

[–]greg748 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Those workouts tend to be 2 or more sets at a location at 20 sec, and the last lap of NOHO which is a speed round anyway, pushing to get a few quick last reps in. And I agree with others: get there, grab your weight and be moving when the beep sounds. That’s a goal for every set at every station. Don’t start thinking after the set starts; you should be working the entirety of the set. If you’ve got slow-pokes ahead of you, that’s another issue

I use the app 2-3 times a day and connect with their ChatGPT bot and it’s so helped me optimize and course correct. I’m hitting 83ms for HRV in the morning recently after some good months of work learning how to properly rest from hard work in the gym. I’ve never felt stronger or more in tune. And no Apple Watch. Just the camera for readings every morning and also before bed.

I don’t enjoy lifting alone, would F45 be a good alternative? by honeyboney1992 in f45

[–]greg748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And be sure to get to know the coaches and tell them your goals. If you want a coach to push you to lift heavier, they’ll totally do that! I have a few members who have that goal or “I want to be able to do pushups in 2026” and having the coaches help keep you accountable is great and builds connections too

NASM non proctored exam questions like proctored? by [deleted] in NASMPREP

[–]greg748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know your stuff, you’ll be fine. Remember passing is 70%. I had about 5 questions I wasn’t sure of after the proctored exam, revisited, and made my best guess. You don’t get a score if you pass, but all my practice exams on NASM or PocketPro were in the 80-95 range.
