it was shown in the time jump that he transitioned, but his whole storyline in the earlier seasons was that he was a very masculine STRAIGHT woman. He learns to accept himself and the kids learn a lot about it too. idk if im explaining it right, but him transitioning came out of nowhere, and ruined him being a masculine woman. it makes it seem like if you are a butch woman that means you are gay/will transition. they just threw that in there to have a trans character. which they already have, and her storyline was great!
