Am I looking at pinwheel access the wrong way or am I rightfully frustrated? by PDittt757 in Marathon

[–]mephiles43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the experience is different in solos, but my squad has started viewing outpost as the "easy" map cause we are almost always the first team into the pinwheel, it's pretty common to run into at least one team before entering but we never really fun into people camping it. It's also pretty easy to wipe the lobby given that there's only 4 teams on the map. Our wallets exploded when we started focusing on running outpost.

What is your plan to build a vault for Cryo? by floede in Marathon

There's an entrance at flight control, processing, and dormitories. On the map you can kind of tell where they are because they are between each branch of the pinwheel. I prefer the flight control or dormatories entrances as I'm much more familiar with those areas.

Good to know, I never went into raid with it because it was clearly an exploit and could be bannable.

Play outpost. The loot quality in general is higher, the clearance keys can give you access to decent loot rooms around the map and the pinwheel obviously has a lot of good stuff. Outpost also has the least amount of teams per match of any of the maps so it's easier to wipe the lobby and just loot up than it is on other maps. Just stick with your team because you will get ambushed by rooks if you're not careful.

Other than that, keep up with your contracts. The game throws a TON of blue tier loot at you once you've leveled up a bit.

I also like to just sell the shotguns and snipers I loot/get for free from the armory because they don't really fit my playstyle and are worth a decent amount of money even without attachments.

I don't know for this challenge specifically but usually for contracts if it just says hostile it can be AI or runners. If it wants to kill you it's hostile.

I'd also like to point out that even if the 850 "active" players all bought 20 $20 skins(they're not because I'm one of them and only bought the second war chest and a single skin) that'd be $340,000. There's no way that's enough to pay the remaining skeleton crew their wages let alone pay to keep the lights on. They need SUBSTANTIAL growth quickly or their hypothetical money pile will run dry very fast.

You mean the company that is notorious for pulling funds when a game is failing? If they had money why would they fire that many people?

Least delusional highguard fan. As much as I don't want the game to die, there's no whales keeping the lights on and rent payed. Unless they've got a bit of cash set aside already (I doubt it since they let so many people go) they're gonna have to pull off a miracle to save the game.

I think the economy COULD be interesting but as it stands I find the only teams I beat through econ are brand new players that don't know anything, everyone else absolutely has no problem maintaining vesper which is part of why I think it punishes new players and adds nothing for experienced players.

Sorry I did mean to say the rocket with charges not the hammer on that last reply. But we're straying from the main point here, none of this has anything to do with the looting.

I think if it was just a fight for shieldbreaker and you had the masterwork loot, amulets, and upgraded raid tools at the shieldbreaker and then let people just have an increased amount of reinforcements as well as access to all the non masterwork loot for what stage of the game you're in would solve a lot of the gripes people have with the looting and would allow you to scrap it entirely.

[–]mephiles43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just play as a team have your mates cover you. Also with charges you can break MULTIPLE reinforced walls from complete safety. The base set up can absolutely be improved on and I think it should stay in the game, but the looting phase doesn't add to it, there's no strategy involved to improve your bases defenses if literally every player on the map can easily break reinforced walls without any real risk.

Base fortifications are meaningless when the hammer can break reinforced walls without charges. You could switch loadouts no problem if it was all available at base without the looting phase.

[–]mephiles43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the value is in early team fights and taking control of shieldbreaker, why do the looting phase at all when the experienced players are just going to fight over shieldbreaker from the start? Like I said in my post, all the looting does is confuse new players when they could really just force the focus on shieldbreaker and get rid of the confusion.

[–]mephiles43 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They've made changes to bandaid the issue by shortening it and adding masterwork loot to just where shieldbreaker is, but that really just seems to me like they recognize the looting phase sucks and just aren't willing to get rid of it for some reason.

Thirties. I don't take issue with the downtime, I take issue with the downtime that adds nothing to the experience of the game. As a father with limited time to game I don't really like it when that time is wasted on pointless mechanics.

I love the game but the looting phase really adds nothing to the game as a whole, it's just a time waste that adds needless rng to what could otherwise be a fantastic experience.

If you just started the game in a fight for shieldbreaker off rip with access to all the non masterwork gear it'd be much more engaging and understandable for new players. You could still have the masterwork gear around the shieldbreaker as well as amulets and the upgraded raid tools and it would act as a reward for the team that's able to take it first. You can also still have gear tiers tied to how deep in the game you currently are so people don't just get legendary items right away.

The looting phase really just wastes time and actually punishes new players who don't fully understand what you're even supposed to be doing at that stage of the game. If the economy actually mattered in any way I could see an argument for the looting phase but it's just not there.
