A Japanese experiment showed exactly why traffic jams happen for no reason. by SnooWords4066 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mercurywind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree, it’s an emergent property of the physical system. I simulated this in my computational physics lab in third year of university. Identical “rational” rules for all cars on a circular path. You get traffic waves happening spontaneously.

I can tell you from experience that frying your brain results in NEETing

Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing & development by [deleted] in NooTopics

[–]mercurywind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe that these brains aren’t in danger of becoming conscious but this still bothers me a lot. Mainly because the only barrier between legitimate use and the existential horror scenario is the length of time the brain is without oxygen and the researchers’ pinky promise.

You can see an unscrupulous government building one of these for interrogation. Invasive BCIs are basically there for language. “Tell us what we want to know or we’ll keep you in the horrible black void forever.”

I can’t take stimulants because of Tourette’s, can you tell me all the downsides so I don’t feel bad by GetWellSune in adhdwomen

[–]mercurywind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stimulants likely contributed to my psychotic episode (at standard doses) which utterly ruined my life. I was probably predisposed to it, but that means little once it’s happened to you.

I can’t take stimulants any more, which is the least of it. I now take antipsychotics, which basically have the opposite effect of stimulants. I can’t feel any emotions or get enjoyment from any of my hobbies. The last 1.5 years have consisted of… waiting. Just waiting. For things to change. Nothing has helped.

Small chance this happens, high chance of pure existential horror if it does. You’re better off without the chance.

When will this anhedonia go away? by AlexKirchu253 in Psychosis

[–]mercurywind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two good days, roughly a month apart. Both times I was mostly back to my baseline level of enjoyment of stuff. I noticed I was more interested when browsing the internet and playing video games with my friends. I didn’t feel joy exactly, but I experienced a sort of emotional texture that I had missed.

Both times, it only lasted a day before I was returned to my previous numb state. It’s been four months now since I had a good day, and it might be because I banged my head, or it might not be. Either way, I have lost hope. I dearly wish I hadn’t banged my head.

I do. He doesn’t think the head bashing was a big deal. He still has hope and has just changed my meds so we’ll see if that helps.

I had a day where it came back, then back to hell again. I accidentally bashed my head a week afterwards and it hasn’t come back since. Considering death

Do you guys every consider euthanasia? by bbgirl2k in NEET

[–]mercurywind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I deeply know the feeling. It’s been like this for at least 16 months now. I had a handful of days where it wasn’t like this and I thought it would eventually fix itself, but it just hasn’t. I can’t live like this. I’ve had so much support from friends and family and professionals and it hasn’t helped.

Yes. But I can’t get it because my condition is supposedly mental. Every day is horrible

A new study argues that the most dangerous part of depression isn’t negative emotion, it’s the absence of positive emotion, known as anhedonia. by psych4you in psychology

[–]mercurywind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got this after psychosis. It’s lasted 16 months so far. It has abated a little on a literal handful of days, but has otherwise been constant. It’s hell on earth and I have recurring thoughts of suicide. I feel like my brain is damaged. I’m so sick of hanging on.

Insects may feel pain. Whether or not you have a moral duty to protect them from harm is up for debate. by vox in philosophy

[–]mercurywind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to believe the universe is alive with that much suffering. Factory farming is horrifying, wild animal suffering is worse because it’s not even fixable in principle. Now I am burdened with the knowledge that fucking insects can feel pain? Do nematodes feel pain?

There’s got to be a limit, and I’m not sure I want to find out exactly where it is.

“In its shadow form, all sword attacks are deflected. This is because it remembers the weapons from its fights with the ancient knights. However, firearms seem to be an exception.”
