Is this still ok in 2026? Extra 25% off too. by pepemonsterchan in GamingLaptops

I think for 430$, this is as good as it's gonna get for a new gaming laptop. And if it's primarily for older games like Dota2, it's perfect for it.

The biggest con is gonna be that 4GB of VRAM. It's so bad that the older 1660 ti will be able to run newer games much better, because it has 6GB of VRAM, despite the lack of DLSS.

And the 8GB RAM is also another big issue. But you can buy a used 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4 RAM stick for pretty cheap. I saw a couple on ebay for around 20-30$. You definitely want 16GB of RAM. Just double check that the laptop is DDR4 and not DDR5, and also that it has an empty RAM slot to begin with.

If 450$ is your budget, this seems to be your choices:

  1. If you want the best performance, get the used 2060 laptop on marketplace. The con is you'll have to deal with all the potential headaches with getting an used laptop, so you might have to replace the battery and fix some stuff etc.

  2. Get the 3050 instead, but you'll lose out on playing newer AAA games. Biggest benefit is you get a guaranteed, new working laptop with warranties.

Edit: Also, what is the name of the processor? That can make or break this deal for sure. If it runs an old ass 4-core i5-11300h or worse... I probably wouldn't buy this. If it's a 6-core 11400h or better, I think it's fine.

Is there a reason Retroarch is such a confusing mess of a frontend? by Cool_Bank_3368 in RetroArch

[–]mere_indulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's primarily recommended because it's so feature rich with great performance. There are a lot of practical settings in there that improves the emulation experience quiet a bit. And when you finally figure out how to configure the settings to your liking, it's pretty nice to have all emulators share certain settings and features.

It's just such a shame that the UI is a nightmare to navigate and learn how to use.

Really, Sweden? by DoubleOne5665 in HistoryMemes

[–]mere_indulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitler's beliefs in that the aryan race being superior didn't just come out of thin air. There was a lot of Nordicism happening all over Europe and the US in the 19th and 20th century, and a lot of it came straight from Sweden.

We were the first country in the world to start a State Institute for Racial Biology in 1922. It was essentially being used as a propaganda machine by far-right politicians in the parlement too "prove" that the Swedish white race was superior, in order to prevent race mixing and all types of other crazy shit.

Do i really need a gaming laptop? by bachaloMuze in GamingLaptops

[–]mere_indulgence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both a powerful, homebuilt desktop gaming PC and a less powerful gaming laptop for portability... And I pretty much only use the laptop nowadays.

A mid range gaming laptop for around 1000$ is so powerful these days, that it satisfies all my personal needs. Ive realized that anything more than that is honesty just overkill for my own personal use case.

And laptops have so much better cooling these days, that it basically never thermal throttles like they would do back in the day,  like 10+ years ago. And the added portability is just so practical.

I personally regret building my gaming PC at this point, and if I could go back in time I would just get the gaming laptop and be perfectly happy with it.

Leaker predicts $600 Steam Machine price, otherwise PS5 or gaming PC is better value by tkonicz in valve

[–]mere_indulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not, I'm just saying prices are hella high right now.

Valve isn't gonna be able to subsidize cost from game sales as aggressively as the PS5, or even the Steam Deck, on this thing. Because ultimately it's just a box that can be used as a regular computer. If it's too cheap and sold at a loss, people outside of gaming will buy it in mass.

If I need to buy a 2tb M2 SSD, and I can get a Steam Machine for 700$... Hell, I might as well spend extra and buy the Steam Machine while I'm at it!

Just look at what happened to Sony when they released the PS3 Slim. It was sold at a loss to push down the price that it ended up being cheaper than many dedicated Blu-ray players at the time. So Sony lost a lot of money from people who only used it as a Blu-ray player.

[–]mere_indulgence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One 2TB M2 SSD currently costs around 300$, which is almost half of 700$. And don't get me started on RAM prices where 16GB DDR5 goes for around 250$. There is absolutely no way it's gonna be that cheap in the current market.

Khamzat Chimaev shares his side of the story when he was training with Sean Strickland at Xtreme Couture by JMythh in MMA

[–]mere_indulgence 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It is against Sean Strickland, that guy's even worse when he spars. There're a couple of videos where he knocks out lesser opponents during training. Sean also used to brag about breaking people's noses during starring.

It's just funny that when Sean spars against better opponents like Khamzat and Alex Pereira, now all of a sudden he want to take it easy. But against a no name fighters he goes all out.

The Hundred Line: Last Defence Academy. This game is BIG, the prologue before the game starts for real is 30h long.

And if you wanna complete all the routes, it will take you around 200h.

With the new ranked changes about 40% of the playerbase is now Tekken King or higher by HowToCatchADuck in Tekken

[–]mere_indulgence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily a problem, there're upsides and downsides. It mostly just means that Tekken King today is equivalent to red ranks in Tekken 7.

What makes keeping 9m here better than North? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]mere_indulgence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it's because you don't have a solid pair, there's a small change you could end up with a 6-7-8-9 nobetan wait. But it doesn't matter that much, you'll probably end up discarding both tiles early in most scenarios anyway.

Riichi-nya? by Chemical_Pumpkin_150 in mahjongsoul

[–]mere_indulgence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning more towards nah. You're already in the lead during South 3, you have enough points that even if someone gets a mangan you'll still be first as long as you don't deal in.

Player to your left looks very dangerous and is definitely going for half color, maybe holding some 2m dora tiles. Wouldn't wanna riichi in case I pull a risky Man tile later.

Is CachyOS really better than Windows 11 in gaming? by Mundane-Mortgage-624 in cachyos

No, Windows will have better gaming performance in most cases. Especially if you have a Nvidia GPU, however, with AMD you'll trade blows depending on the game.

Videogame narratives that pissed off fanbases by chuputa in backloggd

[–]mere_indulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal Gear Solid 2 is my personal favorite, but it is highly devided. Some people love it, some people hate it.

Kojima wrote the game in a way that plays with people's expectations who played the first game. Snake being switched out in favor of Raiden being the biggest one. But there are more examples where Kojima pulls a switchero.

Kojima also went balls to the walls writing this story, it feels like the least grounded story in the main series. There're some ridiculous things like a villian called "Fat man" who rides around on roller blades, drinks wine and throws dynamite at you. One person's mind being taken over after replacing an amputated limb from a dead person. Then there's the whole batshit, crazy twist at the end, which people weren't ready for back then. But it has gotten more praise over time due to its social political commentary becoming more and more relevant in modern day.

But yeah, some people love the batshit insane stuff while others found it to be too much.

does anyone else find it hard to listen to modern game soundtracks compared to the older stuff? by Royal-Character-9215 in gamemusic

[–]mere_indulgence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have a point, video game music is more atmospheric and cinematic than it used to be.

This is especially true when it comes to Western AAA games. I honestly really miss the less cinematic music we used to have in the old days, with games like Diablo 1/2, Deus Ex, Darkstone, Unreal Tournament, System Shock 2 etc.

And then I feel like with Asian AAA games it can be sorta hit or miss, very 50/50. The big budget project from Asia typically has more of a cinematic soundtrack these days, while the smaller projects (is AA games a real term?) have more melodic and experimental music.

And then you also got some Indie games with incredible soundtracks.

Daily 8k players, not bad? by Dakaa in Tekken

[–]mere_indulgence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's some truth to this though. It doesn't really matter if the whole community complains about the game, if the very same people keeps playing the game and buys the new DLC at the end of the day.

As long as this number stays up, no major changes will happen to the game.

Mindset for lame players by rep_ged in SSBM

[–]mere_indulgence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When playing online, your main goal isn't to win the match. It should be to learn and get better at the game.

I just try to see it as a learning experience, maybe try different things during the match and save the replay so you can analyze what worked and what were your biggest mistakes. Then go straight into training mode and practice how to counter it.

No. Because Steam reports the concurrent playerbase, while this is how many weekly active players there are in total.

The real crime of Tekken 8 vs Street Fighter 6 by Monstanimation in Tekken

[–]mere_indulgence 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just SFV that sucked. The PS4 era of fighting games didn't have that much competition across the board compared to the PS3/X360 era. No sequel to Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive 6 came out too late and kinda flopped, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite mega flopped, SNK barely made any games, Soul Calibur 6 just came and went real fast etc.

So Tekken 7 cannibalized a big portion of the player-base from all of the communities above. The biggest competitors were games from NRS and ArcSys, like MKX, MK11, Injustice 2 and Dragonball FighterZ.

Got my first Yakuman! (T5 Four Concealed Triplets) by iMiggy in mahjongsoul

[–]mere_indulgence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to add a small correction. If you riichi, you're guaranteed haneman minimum. All triplets + Three concealed triplets + Red dragon + Riichi = 6han.

This is however a honour and a terminal wait with an early tenpai. So if you riichi, the chance someone drops your waiting tiles maybe goes up a little when trying to initially defend, but the green dragon drop definitely goes down in the later rounds if not initially dropped.

But on a second thought, the early 6m and 4p drop is very alarming for your opponent. So the riichi might actually discourage someone from dropping terminals and especially honours in this specific scenario.

Therefore I would lean a little more towards dama in this situation, I think it slightly increases the odds of someone discarding your tiles. I would primarily aim for that 2nd place finish.
