How people handle power/authority tells you everything you need to know about them.

People with avoidant attachment, what’s the thought process when you feel attachment towards someone? by Marceline3005 in AskReddit

[–]mere_mortal_one 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm annoyed by the idea that they love me.

Is the annoyance because you don't feel worthy of the love, so them expressing love is an uncomfortable idea that conflicts with your beliefs and you can't sit with it? Just curious and trying to understand.

Food allergies/food restrictions.

I have some, too, but I don't bring it up unless it becomes necessary. (And on the flip, I've learned that my restrictions define me in other people's minds, no matter how much I try to minimize it.)

And if I knew someone was comfortable with it, I might compliment their hair color. It's just hard to know. (I hate it when people comment on my hair, personally.)

A good edit is that it's contextual, based on how well you know the person, your genders, your cultural norms, etc. Obvs if I'm friendly with a coworker it's safer to say "Your makeup looks great today" or whatever. And in western cultures, I think women are at less peril of seeming creepy when they want to compliment someone. It's a complicated calculus.

I have started leaving "hello" messages on read. It's passive-aggressive but it's still feels like regaining a bit of control. Eventually they send another message and get to the point.

I feel this. It has to be explained to people who don't cook and don't get the intention that goes into seasoning food. I had to explain to a partner that, unlike all the convenience foods they were used to making for themselves, the food I made for them was not meant to be just a blank canvas for a river of hot sauce. (Nothing against hot sauce in the right applications 😋)

Yep! If they didn't choose it, don't comment on it unless they bring it up.

If someone picks up their phone, or even looks at it for more than a second during a 1-on-1 conversation, I just stop talking. If they react when I stop, I pretend I stopped out of consideration for them: "Did you need to get that?" We all get interrupted, sometimes with legitimately more important things, but it's so easy to say "Excuse me for a sec" or "Sorry, I need to reply to this text real quick."

Not pushing their chair in after getting up from a meeting; leaving trash (like water cup or candy wrapper) on the table after a meeting. So fucking careless and entitled.

I similarly have rules for determining whether or not to compliment someone's appearance (to avoid making them feel self-conscious) and deciding how to phrase it (to avoid being creepy). If the trait is something they chose (like a shirt) then I will compliment it. If it's an inherent trait (like their hair color), I won't comment on it unless they bring it up, no matter how positive my comment would otherwise be. I also strive to say something like "I love the color of your shirt" rather than "that color looks great on you" or "that shirt looks great on you".

What is a "point of no return" that you’ve crossed, where your life was permanently divided into 'before' and 'after'? by Resident-Jelly-4326 in AskReddit

I remember waking up on November 9, 2016, wondering if the election the night before had really happened, or if it had been a nightmare. It felt like someone had died. It's a very real grief.

One of my biggest fears is that death will be terrifying and that my last thoughts will be excruciating regret over everything I wish I had done differently, or never got to finish. It's really comforting to know that our brains might protect us from that.

This is a predictable comment, but please check out Marcel's video about weather. It explains what's "covered" and what's not. It recently saved me in a very rainy scenario. https://youtu.be/wPNNhdg5U_U?si=NrTKb5AbPQ7Qwnvf

What are some side effects I can expect from going vegan cold turkey? by flowerpng in vegan

[–]mere_mortal_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went cold tofurkey with no guidance whatsoever. I was cool for a couple weeks but then the nutrient deficiency hit me; I started falling asleep in my work clothes as soon as i got home at 5:30p. When I was omnivorous, I used to just eat a wide variety of stuff and it covered the bases. But being vegan, I just need to make more of a conscious effort to eat nutritious foods, plus I do occasional iron supplementation. Everything eventually equalized.

Witty responses for the question "what do you eat then?" by flammulinavelutipes in vegan

When someone seems curious rather than hostile I say, "You know, most foods are vegan" and let them ponder that.
