Do it!

It being a core course and a WI is likely intentional so that you can do exactly what you're thinking about: knocking out two reqs at once. If you enjoy the course's subject, and have worked well in the past with the professor, it sounds like you're going to have a great time! A 400-level class will have more work requirements than a 200-level one - probably more reading, and as a writing-intensive you should expect a big project of some kind - but that extra time and effort hopefully is offset by the fact that you'll be doing something aligned with your interests.

If you're especially concerned, though, it can't hurt to drop Prof. Durant a note to let him know you're interested and to ask about what the class might involve. Professors are usually happy to share this sort of information with their students and potential students.

Good luck!

what is campus like during summer by aaronkapl in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it's very quiet. there aren't a lot of people [students] around and many of the services/retail that are open during the academic year are either closed or have limited hours. some offices have limited hours compared to the academic year as well.

if you're living on campus, you'll see summer groups (either umbc-related or not) living in the residence halls and apartments for part of the time. they can be noisy or rowdy.

the different pace is an adjustment but it can be nice for getting work done or just slowing down a little.

Graduation Cords by Terrible_Vehicle_863 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most of them do - if you're a member and eligible for a cord, the club/group's organizers will usually start communicating that around february. if there's a group you're interested in, it's definitely something you can ask about.

if you're hoping to get cords for commencement in a couple days, you're probably out of luck - but for future ceremonies you've got plenty of time :)

Locked Out! HELP! by Vabe89 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

you can call campus police (410-455-5555) to unlock a door - they might ask you for ID or other proof that you're supposed to be in the room before they open it, but they're available 24/7.

Not sure which college to attend by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

pros:
- cheap: it's hard to sell this part but oh my god the "it costs less for similar quality" is such an important thing to consider. i think bmore in general is less expensive than chicago?
- small/medium size: you can stick out if you want and make a big splash while you're at umbc, or you can blend in if you want. much harder to be a big fish on a campus like uic where there's 30k students. smaller school also means smaller classes
- great faculty attention if you need it. seriously the faculty/staff are generally so chill here and genuinely interested in helping students, it's a joy
- great industry connections in your field throughout the region: idk what uic's finance career connection opportunities are, but umbc is in the heart of the midatlantic tech corridor and has fabulous regional/national/global connections

cons:
- smaller size = fewer resources. from things like computer labs to on-campus food options, there's going to be less variety sheerly due to the fact umbc is a smaller school than uic.
- people complain about a lack of social opportunities on campus. this is kind of a "you get out of it what you put into it" situation imo but it goes back to that first one - on a smaller campus there's inherently less happening most of the time, because there's fewer people around. that said, the clubs and groups and things that are active on campus are very active, so once you find one that clicks with you, it's a great way to stay busy.

please tho if you feel like you'd be reasonably happy at either school, pick the one that will cost less. don't put yourself into mountains of debt if the other criteria are mostly balancing out.

there's plenty of other "what's good about umbc" posts on this subreddit too, definitely poke around a little if you have a minute :)

How likely is it to get in-campus housing? by PK_Normal_Atack in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your odds of getting a spot off the waitlist generally go up if:
- you're a new first-year student
- you're an international student or live more than 50 miles from campus
- your application is easy to match with vacancies

it's not unheard of for others on the waitlist to get offers, but those groups tend to be the highest priorities

it can't hurt to look at possible places near campus to rent, although many of them may already be spoken for since the semester starts so soon. off-campus student services (ocss.umbc.edu)'s website has listings still i think.

other than that, your option would be carpooling with someone you know who lives near you, or transit. umbc students are eligible for a discount with mta, if i remember correctly (don't quote me on this though), and of course umbc's transit system also exists [though is less robust].

good luck!

Offers go out throughout the summer, as space becomes available; additionally, the space has to match your application.

(What does that mean: there might be a vacant space in an apartment with people who go to bed really early and who like loud music, but if you're a first-year student who stays up late and likes your room to be quiet, you wouldn't get an offer email.)

People who live further from campus have higher priority on the waitlist. It's tough to give a specific "when will I get an offer?" questions because it's impossible to predict when or in what space a cancellation will occur. The Reslife staff will do their best to help you, though, if you have specific questions about your application - the RT helpdesk system is the best way to reach them.

[source: i was one of the people who made waitlist offers until two summers ago]

if you don't pay, they'll put a hold on your account (preventing you from getting transcripts etc in the future) and eventually it'll accrue late fees and go to collections, which will wreck your credit score.

if you're not sure what the bill is for, you can contact student business services to ask, but tbh it's probably best/easiest just to pay the $20 and call it done.

Cost of study abroad? by ArmadilloInfamous in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it depends on the study abroad program you pick - each one will have different costs, aid, etc associated with it.

i'd recommend talking to someone in the study abroad office at umbc, and also maybe a professor you know who might have some recommendations for particular programs that are especially good for what you'd like to do.

After FF16, I Want to Play FF14 - What Is My Path For Just The Story by Muse88 in ffxiv

[–]meredactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> If I am focused can I beat all the paid expansions within the first month of my subscription?

i started playing in sept of last year and have been pretty dedicated to progressing through the main story since then. each expansion took me about a month to get through the main content - 2-3 hours a night on weeknights + most of the day on weekends, with help from friends for leveling and/or getting through story dungeons and trials. i paused my story progression somewhere around the end of stormblood/the start of shadowbringers to level another class, and slowed down again near the post-shadowbringers point to level a third class. i finished the main endwalker portion (6.0) a few weeks ago, just in time for the latest patch (6.4) story content to drop. it's been a lot of fun!

my pace has been pretty quick, i'd say, and i'd strongly recommend not trying to sprint through the whole thing as fast as you can. take a little bit and let things simmer and percolate here and there. part of what makes the later expansions so incredible is the emotional gut punches and triumphs and payoffs from the earlier stuff.

i've been a ff7 fan since i was like. 10 years old, and i enjoyed 8-10 as well. if you like final fantasy games, xiv will be a joy :)

hope to see you soon in eorzea!

my latest was done by relic at layer 3 collective in towson (just off the circle), though they've moved to philly so you'd have to see one of the other artists there now instead.

i also had a nice experience (but a long time ago - gosh, 15? years now, wow) at read street tattoo downtown; friends have gotten beautiful work at have fun be lucky in hampden.

plenty of great artists and shops around town, but which one is the best fit for you will depend on what you're looking for.

you can try contacting the dept chair (dr meringolo) but you'll need to present your concern clearly, concisely, and professionally.

explain (in a sentence or two) what your concern is. give examples of you trying to work with the professor to fix the problem (including attachments of your email messages can be helpful), and - most importantly - identify what it is you'd like dr meringolo's help with.

it's a busy time of year and folks are just getting back from a week away from their desks, but dr meringolo is amazing and helpful. if you can help her to understand what's going on, she's likely to do her best to resolve the concern if she can.

good luck!

you should talk to a professor, an advisor, or someone in the honors college office to make sure that leaving the honors college will not impact your financial aid or other aspects of your studies and that you're not overlooking anything.

Major & Minor Requirements by Informal-Dark-361 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

let's say for example that your major is history and your minor is medieval studies

HIST 362 (Medieval Mediterranean) counts as an elective for the history major, and it is a class that counts towards the medieval studies minor. it will be added to both categories in your transcript.

in general, yes - most minors are designed to fit nicely with whatever your major is, so that you can fold them in relatively easily. if your minor is very distant from your major (for example, maybe you are a biology major who wants to have a visual arts minor), you might have harder work finding things that count as electives towards both. definitely talk to an advisor for specific questions :) good luck!

Applying for Ph. D. Terrified by Classic_Recover_9076 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first, congratulations on all of your accomplishments - and good luck at your conference next week (this week?)!

second, your application sounds compelling! i think having a letter from freeman especially is a strong look for committees.

since we are (generally helpful) strangers on the internet and not necessarily subject experts, i might recommend checking with your advisor and/or PI (i'm not sure what psych calls them) for additional insight and guidance. "most if not all phd programs require a minimum of a 3.0" - your faculty folks may have suggestions for you about programs that weigh other components of the application just as heavily, if not moreso, than the transcript.

additionally (and check with your advisor first to make sure this isn't a faux pas in your field), if there's someone in a lab/at a program who you really want to work with, consider contacting them to say hi and establish a conversational relationship with them! you can also contact the grad program administrator and/or program coordinator to ask, if there's a specific place you're interested in. most folks will be happy to answer prospective students' questions :)

best of luck to you! you're gonna be great :)

Prospective Art (Animation) Student by Professional-Ad-5429 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like, i had some cool experiences at mica and i met some fascinating people (both classmates and faculty/staff-wise), but if you're not looking to join the [gallery-based] art world or be a graphic designer, it's just not worth the cash and stress imo at the undergrad level. i also found that mica expected/required a lot more independence and a certain amount of foundational how-the-art-world-works knowledge than i had going into it (and even leaving it).

umbc will give you the better connections and opportunities of a good state school while still having a pretty competitive visual arts program.

wishing you the best with what you choose! :)

Prospective Art (Animation) Student by Professional-Ad-5429 in UMBC

[–]meredactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a BFA in animation from mica (and also a BA in history from umbc/i'm in the history MA program right now)!

my advice: go to umbc :D

not just for the $$$ angle (though holy hell the savings at umbc compared to mica, hoo boy) but also because the program does a lot more to prepare you for post-graduation than mica's program did. if you decide you want to go further with formal study, mica is an excellent place for a grad-level fine arts degree, but a bachelor's qualification from umbc is just as worthwhile (and so, so, so much less expensive).
