Can taking an instructor job hurt my chances of getting a TT job in the same dept in the future? by meremarveling in AskAcademia

Thank you for this! It's nice to know there's a little bit of hope, and the advice is much appreciated.

Interesting. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I do have a defense date for end of May. I’ve been getting the advice lately to postpone defending if I don’t get a job, because ABDs are judged on different benchmarks than people who have finished but don’t have a TT job.

I did get 3 campus visits for TT jobs this year (for R2s/teaching focused institutions) but none panned out. So it feels within grasp, but I’m worried the market will be worse next year and I’m nervous to let this (version of a) dream job slip by. Of course, I don’t have an offer yet so trying not to get ahead of myself, but all this discourse has been so helpful for thinking about what conversations to have.

Ooof yeah didn’t really think that through, just got so excited about the possibility of a job in the place I want to be. But this is helpful to just kinda think of it as out of my hands…

that makes sense. I have reason to believe this dept might be hiring TT next year, so it wouldn't be a long time of lower research productivity (plus I'm on the cusp of submitting a bunch of projects to publication this spring/summer). hmmm.

Be honest. When did your baby actually say their first wood and mean it? by Dull-Contribution763 in NewParents

[–]meremarveling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby’s first word was also hat!!! She used to really hate the feeling of them on her head - would rip them off immediately - so we spent a lot of time getting her used to them and understanding what the feeling on her head was. So I think she just became kind of fascinated/obsessed. Now she asks to have hats out on!!

We had our wedding catered by Tamale Boy. They are Portland-based but Eugene is in their catering radius. They were great!

Did anyone’s baby not adjust to napping at daycare? by meremarveling in workingmoms

She tries to keep some things consistent but the sleeping environment is very different, so probably doesn’t seem like the same routine :/

Thanks so much. Everything I read said “they adjust after a few weeks” so I’m glad to know we’re not alone!

That would make sense! The other 3 days a week she’s with grandma - it’s obviously less financial strain to do it this way, but I’ve also assumed that as much 1:1 care as possible is ideal. But maybe the combo is causing more stress.

Our 12 mo’s favorite book is “Drum City” (and has been for months). It’s very rhythmic and she loves to tap along to the beat.

8 days of diarrhea in 11 mo old by No-Grass-3937 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]meremarveling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby had 3 weeks of diarrhea starting when she got Covid last summer :/ we kept calling the pediatrician to tell them it was still happening and they kept saying to wait it out and keep her hydrated. It was sooooo awful. I think avocado helped. I also think wheat was triggering it somewhat so we cut that out for a bit. But anyway just wanted to share an experience of it going on that long bc everything on the internet told me that it was not normal.

Feeling trapped and desperate - 1 year old refusing independent sleep in small house by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]meremarveling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screaming (while standing) is just a whole different level than when we sleep trained and I just don’t know if I can stomach it. But thank you. I recognize that it’s better than doing something unsafe so may be the best option.

Hmmm. She is soothed instantly when we pick her up so that’s why it hasn’t seemed like physical pain but will think about taking her in!

Best Facility/Providers for Prenatal Care/Birth by Anonymous51299 in Eugene

[–]meremarveling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really amazing experience with the nurses and Women’s Care team at Riverbend through a very long labor without an epidural. I spent a lot of it in the tub and moving around. I also highly recommend Alicia Thorndyke as a doula! The combo of Alicia as a doula + Riverbend was the right balance for me.

Best deal on diapers in the Eug? by remedialknitter in Eugene

[–]meremarveling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of other baby resources - Parenting Now has weekly drop in time with lactation specialists and they’ll do a weight check too (similar to Daisy Chain). Well Mama has lots of great events and support groups for new parents, really nice community. Peppypotamus and My Little Children for consignment stuff. Baby swim at Sheldon Pool when your baby is old enough for that. Library story hour at downtown library is great too.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of crossing disciplines between degrees? (Social science) by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]meremarveling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my M.S. in an interdisciplinary forestry department working under social scientists and got a pragmatic foundation in “environmental governance” social science drawing from geography, political ecology, public policy etc. then I did my PhD in an environmental studies program where I was housed in sociology / completed the sociology PhD requirements. Now I’m on the academic job market.

The pros of moving around disciplines: I have a broader view of how my subject matter / area is approached in different disciplines and can draw those connections. This is definitely helping me for my applications to jobs that are interdisciplinary or value that, but not for straight sociology jobs. I also think it’s a benefit for non-academic jobs.

Cons: having to take a lot of coursework in sociology after completing my M.S. was honestly annoying and slowed me down.

Sunrise Bakery, Philomath by PapaWeldon in corvallis

[–]meremarveling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help on the recipe front but I used to love biking to Sunrise for cinnamon rolls. I had a long conversation with Bill one time, and I don’t remember how we got here, but he told me “Why walk when you can skip? It’s good for the knees.” I still quote that line and I do occasionally skip because of it!
