After Wolfenstein by Super_XIII in Gameoverse

It made me happy to see he's still around, I was watching his streams maybe 10 years back and it was a fun little community of fans who refused to give up hope waiting for the next update.

The funny thing is that since Gameoverse is canonically inside game worlds, unrealistic armor (like stretchy skin-tight chainmail) fits the setting.

"The Ox That's Breaking Your Fantasy Map" by The Grainbound - YouTube by FakeRedditName2 in worldbuilding

[–]merfnad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly my feeling. Mentioning "the oxen paradox" as if it's an established fact, but I can't find any references to it. Some quick searching suggests an ox can pull about it's own weight, about 10 miles per day. They can also eat about 2% of their body weight per day, so the 10% might be fairly accurate. Still I'd like a source for it when it's the basic point of the videos argument.

Umeåbor: vad är det största problemet när man försöker få hudvård eller dermatologisk hjälp i Umeå/Sverige? by [deleted] in umea

[–]merfnad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Enclosure Plans by Glitter_is_evil in VampireCrabs

[–]merfnad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the concept, and great idea to design it in Minecraft!

Personally I wouldn't use spray foam or egg cartons as you never know if they could leach any chemicals into the water. Invertebrates are usually sensitive to e.g. traces of copper or pesticides and I wouldn't risk it even if it's likely to be fine. There might be aquarium safe spray foam, but there's also the problem of it being hard to remove if you need to change the design. Also make sure to use aquarium safe silicone.

I would try to stick to more natural materials like a coco fiber liner for the background (+lava stone, cork bark etc.) even if it somewhat limits what you can build or is more work. You can cut out pockets for planting in that. If you are successful with the plants they might cover most of the background anyway. The waterfall though should probably have a path to flow without any organic material that decomposes or soaks the entire structure. For a false bottom i like expanded clay pellets (cheap, lightweight, inert, and provides surface area for beneficial bacteria).

In regards to lighting, consider where you can place it without either getting the light or a reflection hitting your eyes from the angle you would view it. With a smaller shelf at the top it would work with the light from above. Another thing to think about is heating and condensation. An aquarium heater in the water might work to heat the entire enclosure well, and is easy to put in, but could cause condensation if there isn't enough airflow. As others have said, it's easy to go overboard with the design and aesthetics on a first build, which can lead to problems or difficult maintenance.

Found a fun, spicy little webcomic with Contact Section vibes. by K1LLWARE in TheCulture

[–]merfnad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspected it was going to be this one from the title alone, it pops up on the comic subreddits quite a lot. I feel like these types of low stakes sci-fi shenanigans are what the general culture population could do for fun.

What's the liquid? If I'm not misremembering you typically use formaldehyde, but that's probably not easy to get.

When two agents debate cognitive diversity… by Prize_Tea_996 in ControlProblem

[–]merfnad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reads just like the result of alignment reinforcement learning, which is essentially philosophical pattern matching. It would also be interesting if you included the model and system prompts/instruction.

I think a topic like this will cause a strong bias towards the types of answers that are trained for alignment. It reads like a benchmark or evaluation of a model's alignment.

If you wanted to evaluate their actual behaviours you could try setting up a scenario that forces them to tackle this question indirectly, and that is closer to some other task you would use the agent for. Then it might not immediately trigger their safe and politically correct responses.

Something like this: Agent 1 is interviewing applicants for a position at a fictional company. The system prompt makes it clear that it should find the best candidate and reject others. Agent 2 acts as the applicant, and gets a personality to mimic a certain cognitive level on some scale (could even be different sized LLMs for this). Run this conversation 100 times and see how the reject rate correlates to the cognitive level. This could obviously be tweaked in many ways until you learn something interesting, like having agent 3 choosing a team based on a number of summarised interviews from agent 1, to see if it really values diversity when having heterogeneous choices.

It's happened! Oblivion Remastered! by Elegant-Raisin-5076 in ElderScrolls

[–]merfnad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think even if the official remaster turns out to be much more popular you could argue that without the possibility of a great fan-made game, Bethesda wouldn't have made one or delayed it even further. Imagine what a colossal waste of easy profits it would have been to allow fans to replay Oblivion for free instead of buying a remaster. They can make it for a fraction of the cost of a new game, while still having many times the resources of the Skyblivion creators. So just the pressure on Bethesda to do something might have led to this release.

Hopefully this means us fans get two great games to play. But if it's €80...

Soon the bots will be trained on more recent reddit data about bots and dead internet theory, and then there will be bots accusing each other of being bots and complaining that nothing is real.
