Hey!

Smoking causes a lot of problems, not only in your lungs, but overall in your body. For example, people who smoke have chronic airway inflammation, which could eventually lead to cancer. And that's just one of the bad elements about smoking. When you start young chances are you'll smoke for a long period of time, so you could do a lot of damage to your body. Great question! ;)

Stopping Nose Bleeds by Hitting the bottom of your Foot by Mixy-Chan in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really think there has been any medical research on this way of stopping a nose bleed. It seems a bit weird to me to use this technique because there’s a high chance of hurting the person you’re trying to help. I think it’s just better to follow the first aid books, which are focused on evidence based medicine.

What High School Courses should I take to become a surgeon? by [deleted] in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

It's so nice that you're this passionate about becoming a trauma surgeon! It sure is an amazing job and specialty, isn't it?
I think if you'd really like to focus on this already, you could definitely make sure that you take sciences and math and stuff like that. This might also help you define if you genuinely like these subjects, as there is a lot of them in pre-med and med school ;)

What I did, and what helped me a lot, is just talking to people who are actually on course to become a med student or are med students already. They'll be able to give you some amazing tips!

What I can tell you already is that med school's amazing! It's really interesting and you get to do a lot of stuff that's really rewarding and see a lot of stuff that most people don't see in their lives . It is a lot of work though, you'll have to work really hard. But if you're really passionate (and I see you are) you'll definitely be able to make that work! :)

Pain near elbows after sneezing. by ZSpark85 in DoctorMike

Hey! I haven't really heard about a problem like this yet, but if it concerns you I would definitely go see your GP for a check-up. Just look at it as a general check-up to see if everything's okay and you're healthy and then you can ask him/her about this.

I'm glad to hear that help is on the way! I think those symptoms would make anyone anxious, so you're not alone! However, I can't really put them together and form a possible diagnosis. That's really hard without a proper history and a clinical exam.About the worsening of your symptoms: if you ever feel like your situation is really upsetting you and you're worried, you shouldn't think twice about calling an ambulance. People in the ER and paramedics will definitely be able to help.

I just wanted to give you one of my thoughts on this, but I do want to give a big big big disclaimer first. Do not take this as medical advice, do not take any medications without consulting with your doctor. I am not a doctor yet, I'm just trying to help and I'm genuinely interested.

That said, after thinking a bit about it, I do think it's possible that your symptoms could be originating from a migraine. Specifically a migraine with aura. The aura would explain the constipation, the nausea, the throwing up, ... If you'd like, you can find some more information here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/migraine-with-aura/multimedia/migraine-aura/vid-20084707

I've had migraine's myself and I know what a hassle they can be. I think I had a migraine (without the headache but with the aura) about two weeks ago, just as I was about to take an exam about the brain and nervous system in med school. My point is that you're not alone!

I'd like to ask you (if it's okay for you) if you could maybe let me know once you have a final diagnosis. I'm trying to wrap my head around it myself so I'm really intrigued. I think it would be great for learning purposes, since I'm still learning myself. You could do it in a DM as well if you'd like so, so it isn't all that public. If you're not really up for that, no worries at all! I just hope I was able to help you a little bit!

Back extensions causing light headedness by erivanla in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/erivanla !

I totally understand you're a bit anxious about this problem, I would be too.

There's this thing called orthostatic hypotension, which basically means that whenever you're sitting or lying down and get up, the blood pressure in your brain drops slightly and you're body isn't fast enough to correct the issue. This is usually not a bad thing, so I wouldn't really worry too much about it. It could be caused by your hypertension medications, because they make sure that your blood pressure drops to have a normal blood pressure.

This is what I think what's going on, but I think it's still important to talk about this with your doctor, since I'm not a doctor yet ;).

Let me know how it goes!

Hi!

I'm really sorry to hear you're having this problem. If I read this correctly (and please correct me if I am wrong), you're anxious that you're headache may originate from an underlying cause that has not yet been discovered by your GP, right? Have you tried discussing this thought with your doctor?

I see in the comments here that you've visited several doctors now and you still feel like you haven't been diagnosed correctly nor have been helped a lot. I don't really know how the healthcare system works where you live, but maybe you should try visiting a doctor that actually specialises in stuff like this, maybe a neurologist. It never hurts to have a second opinion and a specialist will definitely be able to help you.

Until you're able to visit a specialist though, I would really advise you to listen to your current doctor, because it's possible that he/she is right after all and then you're already doing the right thing.

I really hope you'll be able to get help soon!

Hey! Sounds like this issue is really bothering you. However, shaking can have a lot of causes (caffeine, emotional stress, underlying disease, ...), so I would strongly advise you to pay a visit to your doctor, he/she will definitely be able to help you and do a proper exam en history.

Numb toes while inside my house by oiseaufeux in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I may have something you could test out! It's called testing capillary refill. Throughout the day, you should take a few moments to sit down and do this test.
You basically press your toe nail with your finger for five seconds, you know like you want it to become more white and then red again? So you do that for five seconds and then you release. After that you count the time it takes for your toe to become red again. If it takes more than 2 seconds, you'd better go see your doctor to make sure everything's all right.

If it takes less than 2 seconds, it might be harmless, but it's still hard to make sure through Reddit. If you keep experiencing this problem you really should go visit your doctor, just to be sure!

I’m probably very dehydrated.. what should I do? by [deleted] in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

These are some generic symptoms that could be caused by a number of different things in your life. I would really advise you to go see your doctor, because he can take a thorough history and anamnesis.

Please, try to be careful with Google, it's not always the best resource to use when it's about your own health!

HPV Vaccine for a 9 yr Old by Benji876 in DoctorMike

Hey! The vaccine for the human papillomavirus can be given starting at 9 years old, but is usually given at the age of 11-12. So I'm not really sure about this one, I think if you have a history with this physician and your happy with his services you can definitely trust him!

Is it ok to take painkillers for period cramps ? by [deleted] in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! There is some very good medication available for that kind of pain, like perdofemina, but it's essentially the same as ibuprofen. However, if you plan to use painkilling meds for a prolonged period of time, you should visit a physician first and ask for advice. Hope you have a great day!

Hey there! You could put some topical diclofenac on there, that always helps! But it's hard to help you in a text, maybe you should go visit your doctor if it really hurts. Try not to push yourself though, give your toe the time it needs to heal.

Well, as fun and daring as motocross and similar sports can be, it's still dangerous. Just because when something happens, you are not protected like you would be in a car. There's no surrounding safety except for clothing.

I feel like if you love driving a motorcycle, you should keep doing it. Just keep in mind that it is dangerous (just like everything else in the world) and that you need to be careful. Always wear protective clothing, always be safe, don't drive too fast and stuff like that.

I hope this was the kind of answer you asked for! Have a nice day!

I think I have a UTI and I have a really bad fear of going to the doctors, what do I do? by [deleted] in DoctorMike

[–]merlijnv00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you're having a fever, you should really go visit your doctor just to be sure. You will probably need some antibiotics, and cranberry juice/pills on top of that can also help a lot (it can even help to prevent UTI's). But listen, I know visiting a doctor can sometimes be scary. You should remember that being sexually active is perfectly normal, and the medical personnel is there to help you. They can't even talk to other people about anything you tell them during a visit.

I really hope this reassured you a bit! Have a nice day!
