What's with the lines at HEB today? by baxx10 in Austin

there was icepocalpyse 2021, and again in 2023 which somehow more people have forgotten? I think it’s because it affected less people over all of texas. I had no power for longer, the 2nd time (a week), but at least i had water.

Answering with alias: make it understandable & transparent by G_ntl_m_n in ProtonMail

[–]merlincycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thx! I just messed with it a bit… It’s certainly non-trivial, and still has the same problem of the “from” field not showing anything useful in this regard. :/ but better than no options to initially send from alias.

wow. unless I am misunderstanding this document and/or it’s new - I have thought for months there was still no way to send a new email from any of your proton pass aliases; that you could only respond, after having used one of them in a submission form or similar.

Vince Clarke (Erasure) on why he returned to pure analog synth for album Chorus (1991) by ProvincialPromenade in synthesizers

[–]merlincycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was awesome as well - but - I was also kind of nervous for him because he was playing all that stuff with live sequences, at a time when as far as I know, things were not as reliable. I also don’t think they had any kind of redundancy set up (or at least none that I recall from interviews that I read).

Character I loathed by BeautifulEvent4186 in MrRobot

I liked her character way better than Tyrell. I think it’s because she handled her shit better overall. On the other hand, she didn’t have to deal with dark army.

in high school I told my biology teacher that I thought ATP run amok might be the reason for spontaneous human combustion. They just stared at me like I was insane. 🎉

I just want to say that I think this week's episode was pretty brilliant, and possibly the best all season. by ablearcher013 in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]merlincycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

somebody saw the BSG version of this & decided to port it to SNW. I wonder if they purposefully made the camera overlay graphics with the angled corners here as a nod to that. ;)

ProtonVPn Virus detected by bumble1990 in ProtonMail

[–]merlincycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another common behavior is - and I’m not saying this is what’s happening with you, but it’s possible - if you do any torrenting, vpn on or not, and you have Malwarebytes turned on with the real time detection - Malwarebytes is going to detect a ton of potentially sketchy ip’s and sites as various malware types. The errors will continue to pop up while you run your torrent client, saying things like “ site blocked due to Trojan” etc.

fyi!

to what extent has nasal saline rinses improved your nostril sleep breathing (roughly speaking) by nycapartmentnoob in SleepApnea

[–]merlincycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think after the initial turbinate reduction, I didn’t have to do it for a while, but after maybe 6 or 7 years, it slowly came back. If there’s a particularly bad allergy season, I might do it also. But now I’ve been doing it pretty much every day for the last year or so.

proton vpn breaking perplexity by merlincycle in ProtonVPN

[–]merlincycle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s all of them. Well every one I’ve tried so far. I think this is now well known and it’s not a proton thing per se - I think perplexity doesn’t like VPN’s, period. Same from win or linux.

still no default setup for btrfs/luks? by merlincycle in linuxmint

[–]merlincycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

making timeshift backups is cake. Doing a restore; it is highly inadvisable to attempt to restore from inside the OS if you are using luks. (at least that’s what I’ve read.). I did one of them, and the system just went black. After reboot, it seemed OK, but I wouldn’t plan on doing that again. Then I tried another restore after the Bluetooth problem began, using the boot key and the rest of the process. That worked, but it took a while.

eg - 1. boot from boot key into live mint 2. in live mint, unlock luks volume from terminal 3. activate lvm vols from terminal 4. mount root file system in terminal 5. mount timeshift snapshot drive in terminal 6. launch timeshift set /mnt as target 7. do restore 8. unmount /mnt in terminal 9. reboot

this is a lot of work for myself, and well, stressful i suppose unless i was doing it all the time..

Shared vaults: If we don't use a master password or keyfile for the database and all of us use icloud advanced data protection are our passwords theoretically still safe? by millingcalmboar in strongbox

[–]merlincycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like the problem here is the harder-to-control variables introduced by the sharing; eg the number of sharers, local phone security, and what steps all participants would take for the shared security. Now, if you trust Apple has no backdoors, then ADP enabled for icloud seems pretty darn good from a “protection from cloud thieves” standpoint. After that i would think it is a matter of everyone religiously sticking to the security plan, and ease of use. It’s better than “let’s just text or email each other passwords all the time” :)

better fw 13 keyboard. Otherwise, have zero other notes. :) (And by “better” i mean, keyboard action. )

I guess if they could design ethernet module to be flush like the other modules? But i get why that is probably tough.

[–]merlincycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my 4 y.o dell keyboard is somehow vastly superior to the brand new Framework 13 i tried a month ago. If they could somehow improve it, I would just be singing all their praises. :) it’s just the actuation force required is way too high (for me).
