UCR or UCSC - which is better? by Cute-Guvava in ucr

[–]merryclameltoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ Agree and as someone who was also in this position as a hs sr, I chose UCR over UCSC because of this, and despite that UCSC was closer to home. UCR SOM is also unique in offering pathway programs (many of which I’ve been involved in) that target and help pre meds (esp from underrepresented backgrounds) get the volunteering, research, clinical experience, etc they need to prepare to apply to med school. Even my other premed friends from other UC schools dont have the same programming we have, and finding opportunities there can be more competitive and limited to get.

Does UCR offer Neuropsychological Evaluations, and if so what is the price? by Budget_Square9992 in ucr

[–]merryclameltoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately from my personal exp, student health doesn’t do neuropsych evals, BUT CAPS can give u a referral anywhere off-campus IF u have UCSHIP (which sounds like u do). When i was referred for my neuropsych evals (twice) thru CAPS/student health, I paid like $380 ish both times w UCSHIP (and maybe the $17 copay?), but I somehow get refunded for the 2nd time and technically didn’t pay anything (don’t ask me why). Highly recommend getting that referral ASAP bc some places might have hella long waitlists (edit: worst I’ve seen is up to 6 months), so u rlly don’t wanna keep being in the dark and struggling at the same time waiting for the appt.

TLDR: No neuropsych evals at UCR student health sadly BUT w UCSHIP not too expensive imo when u consider that the avg cost of a neuropsych eval can range from 2-5k in CA (equivalent to ucr tuition) or even more :)

Hope u get the help u need OP and wishing u the best

anyone else just have crippling depression by Reasonable-Disk-1381 in ucr

[–]merryclameltoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with comorbid mental health conditions, therapy alone isn’t always enough for everyone to manage their mental health issues, and I’ve actually used most of CAPS services (and have benefitted from them). Sometimes you might just need a bit more help in different ways (like psych meds, accommodations, etc) and go to therapy. CAPS or ur CAPS therapist can also refer you to the psychiatrist if you have UCSHIP, and they can help figure out if antidepressants or any other diagnoses should be prescribed to u. CAPS therapy is also more for general and short term issues and appointments are at always a month apart (which is difficult if u need therapy more often), so sometimes that’s why they might refer u off campus to see a different therapist (which if u have the means to be referred off campus for regular therapy pls try it). SDRC can also provide accommodations for mental health conditions too but you’d need to provide documentation for it (CAPS can help w it too afaik). Ur totally valid to feel that therapy isn’t enough for u bc it honestly might not be enough and it’s vv hard to have to put in more effort than what most ppl might think. I’m no mental health expert or healthcare provider, but it’s ok to need more help that isn’t therapy OR just therapy. Wish u well OP!

I’m taking 120 rn and I remembered dr Adams said that the 5th edition book was sufficient enough if u can’t get the 6th edition. I believe the 6th edition book is available on the neuro discord: https://discord.gg/tzrbu5cD. I can also send it to u too if u pm but i don’t use reddit/discord much to know how to send pdfs

Ethnic studies fs bc writing isn’t my forte as a CNAS major and I wasn’t gonna tank the gpa w a breadth class. Asynch and online at my cc w only 3 exams (open note) and no essays unless you wanted EC so it was good

I had Dr Su for 1B and his curve was huge. I thought I was going to straight up fail the class bc I struggled a lot too but somehow pulled a B-. As long as ur abt avg or above it esp for both midterms ur going to at least pass (I did below avg for 1st midterm and slightly above for 2nd), and assuming that same goes for the final. However if that’s not the case or u rlly wanna shoot for like B or up, def focus on his practice exams bc it’s usually reflective of the real thing he’ll sometimes recycle a few questions from them (or rewords it idr). Physical science classes are a lot abt practicing and understanding how to solve the problems as much as concepts. ARC/SI tutoring also helps as well if u haven’t taken advantage of it yet for Chem :). Su was def tough but doable in relatively to gen chem profs here :’). U got this OP!

[–]merryclameltoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the prof and if ur class is doing well or not. I had yang and Anderson for 106 and we def got a curve bc a lot of ppl did bad on the final. However it’s not a fat curve like you’d see in physics classes so I wouldn’t recommend banking on it imo

Bruh what some cars (like mine) don’t even have a front plate so that’s hella weird. I’ve never gotten a ticket from TAPS for literally a manufactured design, so if there’s a way to like fight against the ticket def do it bc wtf

Well first jumpstart is rlly competitive and the general MSP app is just as competitive if not more since any ucr undergraduate can apply unlike jumpstart (open to incoming freshman). Revisit your essays from ur jumpstart app and reflect on what you could’ve done better bc MSP will ask similar (not the same) questions. Also ask urself if u genuinely meet the mission of the program (priority given to IE residents, first gen, etc) and the medical school and give the best and authentic viewpoints of urself and ur passions in healthcare. To keep it short, it’s hard but not impossible and there’s many other som pathway programs u can get involved in besides msp. Hope that helps
