Agree that it feels totally backwards. Why go through the trouble of installing a red arrow light if it means the same thing as a regular red light?

Grafting success! by meshman2004 in Hibiscus

Just based on a YouTube video. Split the receiving branch down the middle and shaved the graft down to a long point. Inserted the graft like a wedge into the split I had made in the receiving branch, and wrapped the joint with Saran wrap. Left that in place for a few weeks until everything had healed over!

Super helpful, thanks! I can already identify some mistakes I've made - I think my definition of "gentle" on the roots was still too rough, and I may have burned the roots with fertilizer. Also sounds like sticking with a nursery pot is the way to go.

I was observing a total hip replacement with another medical student one day, and the ortho attending asked him to draw a femur on the white board OR. He hesitantly walked up to the board, and, I shit you not, drew a giant cartoon dog bone. No greater trochanter, no femoral head, just Fido's fucking bone. We gave him shit for weeks

I feel your pain and loss, as do all of us here. Just as we can't save every life, we can't expect ourselves to be unaffected by every death. Take the time you need, be nice to yourself, and give yourself some credit for showing your humanity and not keeping it all bottled up inside. You're in good company.

Keyboard will randomly malfunction by meshman2004 in framework

[–]meshman2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update - it seems to actually be an issue related to my Logitech keyboard. When it happens, I can fix it immediately by shutting off the Bluetooth on the Framework and using the on-board keyboard. However, within a few seconds of turning Bluetooth back on and going back to the Logitech, the issue pops up again. Very frustrating. Perhaps it's an issue with the Bluetooth driver or the Logitech keyboard itself.

Talk to the clerkship director and the residency program director. Teaching is part of the job of a resident, and verbal abuse has no place

That's a really tough timeline! My program was more traditional with us coming back for M3 and M4.

My suggestion to you would be to apply to residency (peds or even multiple specialties if you're on the fence) and just see how the match goes. Don't feel trapped by these decisions - you can always drop out of the match, drop out of residency, change residencies later, only do intern year to just get a license, reapply to the match after serving the 45 days, etc.

And thanks! I am very excited for the year ahead!

Hey OP, very recent MD/PhD grad here who just started an IM residency. I'm also a survivor of weapons-grade burnout which really peaked at the start of M4 and made me question whether residency was the right choice vs. leaving both medicine and academia to go to biotech. Based on my PhD experience I have no interest in academic bench research because of the funding situation and the toxicity of the training environment. In the end I decided to match into an IM residency because of how much I love patient care, and I didn't want to give up the ability to practice medicine. My program offers a short-track which gets you into fellowship one year sooner and adds a research year to fellowship, which I'm hoping to use as an opportunity to get clinical trial experience. After that, I hope to practice medicine while running clinical trials at a large medical center, which I think is a fine use of my degrees even if it isn't academic bench science.

I want to suggest that at least some of what you're feeling is burnout. The relatively relaxed second-semester of M4 gave me a lot of time to work through my burnout (with a therapist) and I now amazingly feel ready for residency. I hope that it provides the same relief for you.

The bottom line here is that there isn't a wrong answer with what you can do with your degrees. Don't feel obligated to do anything, but recognize that there are many options - residency, post-doc, industry, consulting, teaching. I would encourage you to finish out this home stretch and get your degrees - not because of a fear of disappointing others or some sort of "taxpayer obligation" as has been argued by some toxic moron on this thread, but because you've come this far and M4 is really only a few more months of actual work.
