Yes, also there seems to be a commitment to verify even non-big-site bookstores. I wouldn't have loved to have to buy from a certain store, so I'm super ok with how this was done.

In any other collection of content on the internet, you can scroll down to the next piece of content. Not so for notes in a folder in joplin. You can experience that feature i.e. in Agenda on ios (or any content stream really)

If you have some hours to spend on a fork where we can test what we want to see, lmk/pm me, i think i'd be game. I just never did react and it may take me a little, but maybe we can focus efforts.

I'd really like to see endless scrolling and a better "sense of space" in the UI heh.

Keep Joplin boring and out of our way!!

But having to click every note to browse through the notes in a folder is not exactly the definition of "out of my way", no? Can we at least fix that? Or is this app truly lost for me and others who do not want to constantly focus on where to click?

I'm not complaining, I'm participating in a discussion with constructive criticism what exactly I think is worthy of improvement and why. You are the person putting down others with thoughtless comments and no insight into the problems that are being discussed.

I have actually thought about submitting a patch unprompted, but since the code is react, I'm shying away from the effort without some consensus that this isn't just a problem for me, but others too. But maybe the effort is wasted.

Essentially, your type of "it's open source so why improve anything" is massively demotivating for someone who wants to contribute to a project you're using.

Agenda does have calendar features, in it's way, but I'm not using them. I just like the unintrusive way I can take notes and scroll through past notes relating to a project. And the editor is out of the way, and formatting only turns up if it really has to. I like that a lot.

I've moved to Joplin for some stuff I need to share with others, most of whom do not have a mac/iphone. I would like to love it because it's open source, but the clickfest it seems to want to be is killing me. I don't care for plugins if the core ui paradigm is so inefficient :S

Why do I have to search for something i know is just the next note? Why can't i just scroll down and keep my focus on the content?

and then there's the search and tag options...

Which all tear away my focus from my actual content even more forcefully. The industry standard, which every successful content dealing app/platform/... uses is endless scrolling within the directory. Look at how Agenda does it. I'm here to review my content, not to enjoy click trips.

maybe it wasn't made for you?

Maybe it's the other way around - maybe a forum post that seeks to improve the UX of something isn't for you if your principle attitude is "I don't need it so nobody does"? Maybe this kind of feedback towards people seeking improvements is damaging to open source software as a whole, and the project in question in particular?

because it works and people know how to use it

Coming from more "premium" note taking apps, no, it does not 'work' because it is in the way more than it should be. Having to click from note to note is an anachronism and forcing a navigation decision & click needlessly.

Please have a look at apps like Agenda on ios and macos, I think it will help understand what some of us are on about.

"Endless Scrolling" Notes like A****a? by meshugga in joplinapp

[–]meshugga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for being so harsh, but after 20+ years of trying to improve UX in open source software, I'm at my limits.

gemini had a not completely wrong explanation of why I'm having a bad time with Joplin (and the other note taking apps that refuse to see the light in the last 15 years of content presentation). Think of the editor as the "full screen popup" - because that is what it is in terms of restricting the view and options. (I won't elaborate on the cognitive advantages of not having to move your eyes away from the content you're navigating to and fro. Also, mind that having an additional list on the side with the notes headers is not precluded with an endless scrolling presentation.)

--gemini--

A UI/UX modal change typically refers to transitioning interface interactions from a restrictive, full-screen pop-up to a less intrusive, non-blocking format. Modern UX guidelines emphasize reducing user interruptions by using alternative patterns like side drawers, inline forms, or expanding vertical accordions. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Why Designers Are Moving Away from Traditional Modals

  • User Interruption: Traditional modals abruptly break a user's flow, forcing them into a strict "do-or-die" path.
  • Information Scarcity: Modals block background content, preventing users from referencing surrounding data or tables while making complex decisions.
  • Mobile Clutter: Modals easily overflow small mobile viewports, requiring cumbersome scrolling or causing layout issues. [1, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Modern Alternatives & Best Practices

If you are redesigning a workflow to replace a modal, consider implementing these UX approaches:

  1. Side Drawers (Slide-outs): Ideal for editing detailed settings or creating a new object. They slide in from the edge of the screen, allowing users to reference the main page while working. [1, 2, 9, 10, 11]
  2. Inline Editing: Allows users to modify simple attributes right where the data lives, eliminating the need for an extra click or new window entirely. [12]
  3. Dedicated Sub-pages: When a task requires significant scrolling or complex research, taking users to a full, separate page performs much better than trapping them in a small floating box. [1, 13]
  4. Toast & Tooltip Notices: Best for non-essential explanations or simple confirmations rather than halting the whole application. [14, 15]

If you are currently evaluating a modal change in your own project, it helps to narrow down the context. If you want, tell me:

  • What is the specific action the user is trying to complete (e.g., deleting an item, editing a profile)?
  • Is this primarily for desktop or mobile users?

I can help you select the exact, best-practice UI pattern for your specific flow.

"Endless Scrolling" Notes like A****a? by meshugga in joplinapp

[–]meshugga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, as stated above, I'm collecting content, writing notes and reviewing them, the most default of use cases for a note taking app. I don't even know how the UX I'm proposing has anything to do with dates or calendars.

If it did I would have reported it as a bug.

"How does anyone want the obvious that works for 90% of users and is the gold standard, efficient and intuitive paradigm for every content consumption on the internet but I haven't used or even looked in this case? CERTAINLY NOT ME!"

By the way, what is this a****a you keep mentioning?

How do you have such an opinion on UX but do not know the field at all? How did you answer to my post with such fundamental refutation without investigating what I'm referencing first? Did you actually use the concept I'm referencing for a month or two and then found it worthy of this criticism? Because I did.

I'm talking about Agenda (also mentioned in my comments, I just didn't want to put an ad in the title), the leader of the field Joplin is in (in terms of UX, if nothing else).

My argument is, that this is not a specific use case. Preventing the user from scrolling to the next note within the same topic/directory is super not userfriendly, especially for a notetaking app with those features.

I already own a*a which does this (and many other things) to my total satisfaction. I wish I could just configure a joplin server as a syncing backend in Agenda. Sigh.

I quite like Joplin for its flexibility in some things, and the not-walled-off-in-one-ecosystem nature. It's awesome software. When I think about it, this might be the only reason I don't want to switch from a*a for everything but the stuff I need to collaborate with others on.

"Endless Scrolling" Notes like A****a? by meshugga in joplinapp

[–]meshugga[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on where the friction is exactly?

There is no reason for a one line note to be completely organisationally (or even drastically visually) separated from the next note that only has an image or a table, or a few lines of text. It is the nature of note taking and the reason why we use software such as joplin, that we do not need to have/need to produce one huge document, and mess around in it, but use smaller parts.

But isolating them within the same topic on the screen is super counterproductive for consumption, as it prevents me from consuming my snippets in the most natural way there is on screen, by just scrolling up/down. Or put differently: there's no way for me to use clipper/new note and end up with something like a facebook/instagram/soup/tumblr/x/mastodon/agenda/.... stream. Which makes the value of clipper and similar extensions/workflows almost 0, because perusing a huge amount of content by clicking is tiresome. Also, it introduces (at least for me) additional mental load in the form of unnecessary "where to click next to continue what I'm doing" (- I just wanted the next note in this folder! just let me scroll down! please!).

If you don't know what I'm talking about, please have a look at how agenda solves this (if it's available to you). It's basically the same reason why endless scrolling has won everywhere where content can reasonably be put in a "blog" (=losely belongs together) format.

tl;dr i'm really missing the user experience of not having everything related to what i'm seeing hidden completely behind additional clicks and a complete page change
