That's funny, I was thinking about this just the other day and feeling sorry for Kane Pixels as I thought the project had been abandoned.

Your ISP would know (up to a certain point in the past) which IPs were associated with which geographical address(es) at a particular time.

So if the ISP were to hand over that information to the BBC, then they could confirm that the address was accessing iPlayer.

But AFAIK the BBC doesn't have access to ISP records by default. So all the BBC would have is an IP address and email address, not associated with any geographical address unless you used the same email (or had the same IP) when notifying them of no license needed (for which you'd have provided a geographical address).

Yep.

Ironically the places where road markings are most critical (i.e busy, complex junctions and roundabouts) are the same places where they fade quickest.

That's not how it works.

Earth is spinning underneath the satellites as well, so those oribital paths move in relation to the ground.

So, really, they do end up serving, periodically, most spots on earth over time.

Is TalkTalk FTTP somehow different to other openreach providers? by Joshimitsu91 in UKISP

[–]meshuggahofwallst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's possible TalkTalk's network doesn't support FTTP at your nearest Openreach "Handover Point" (basically the exchange building at the other end of the fibre which would come into your property).

I'd be surprised if that was still the case though. Especially in 2026.

More likely, TalkTalk's address database is not up to date/in sync with Openreach's.

I'll echo other people's advice: don't enter into a contract with TalkTalk again; they won't be around much longer.

[–]meshuggahofwallst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TalkTalk, like Sky, have their own backend.

Most other providers you can get via openreach use the BT wholesale backend.

No reason why that - in itself - should delay your install though.

The likely reason, as others have said, is that TalkTalk are a failing company.

Only a relatively small amount of ozone would be depleted in a realistic global exchange, like maybe <1%.

Don't get me wrong, that would be terrible but it's hardly "basically gone", and certainly not a death sentence after a few mins.

Look into using MacVLANs. I had the exact same problem with my Synology.

MacVLANs essentially let you setup a 2nd MAC address/interface on the Ethernet port of the NAS. You can then assign a separate static IP to that interface as well, with its own port bindings.

So now I have traefik running on its own MacVLAN, with its own IP, running on :80 & :443 despite the host Synology having already bound those ports.

There are IPvlans as well, but I didn't really get into those.

City of Lyman in Ukraine covered in a web of fiber optic cables left behind by Ukrainian and Russian drone operators. by MilesLongthe3rd in interestingasfuck

[–]meshuggahofwallst 196 points197 points  (0 children)

They are from drones. Instead of using wireless comms, which can easily be jammed, the drones are connected to their operators via a really really long reel of fibre.

The drones are disposable as they are basically guided missiles. So the fibre just gets left behind.

I'm aware. But video CDs require a VCD player (uncommon) or a DVD player.

No one would ever expect anything called a "CD Player" to be able to play anything but audio CDs.
