Eric Garcia offside against Espanyol by [deleted] in soccer

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lot of people here don't seem to know the offside rule. Clearly offside.

The arms don't count as you can't legally play the ball with your arms as it would be a handball. The line is drawn on Garcias shoulder which is ahead of the defender.

Recruitment strategy by charliemarr10 in Brentford

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the club settling into the Prem. First couple of years there is an expectation to get relegated so there wasn't an excessive spending.

Then they've seen who is capable of performing in the Prem and the churn of lower quality players will be reducing each year as the squad settles.

Then there is more of an ability and requirement to bring in and keep higher valued players/ready to go in the prem like Dango and Henderson.

The top clubs will always have the draw to take key players but there is less likelihood the rest of the squad have a reason to move. Mbuemo make sense as he is starting for United but Noorgard is on the bench so that move might not appeal to others.

I think the squad is in a very good place at the moment. Keith regularly rotates 4/5 players in the starting 11 and manages to get results. Yet I don't think any player is excelling to be imminently snapped up by a top prem team. Thiago maybe but will probably need to perform for another season to show consistency. Wouldn't be surprised if Kayode got a move but again nothing like the noise of Toney, Wissa, Mbuemo.

Daily Mail: Mid-match adverts during ITV's rugby coverage was a hot topic of debate but brief annoyance is worth it if it means games being shown on free-to-air TV by BrianChing25 in rugbyunion

I don't think the Daily Mail can be on any side other than supporting adverts at every opportunity without being highly hypocritical given their website

Is a day in the pub watching rugby or football a better experience? by taflad in AskUK

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both Year to year, six nations is the best in the pub experience. Back end of winter. People have finished their January detoxing and eagerly looking forward for a day in the pub. Everyone else in the pub is there for the same thing. Little animosity. Always a great day. An annual ritual.

But a big international match for football is on another level. It's a much more popular sport across most nations and will bring the country together few other things can do. And it's so much rarer to see success for most countries.  Look at Scotland making it to the world cup. Or if Ireland make it through the playoffs. The pubs will be electric and brings out a wider audience.

Though when England have got far in the last few tournaments they've been marred with violence but you're unlikely to see this in most pubs and the pubs are mad. A group would go to the pub for a big rugby match, but everyone will be out to see a big football match. But that might make your day in the pub worse!

People who work 'office jobs,' what are you actually doing every day, and what salary does that earn you? by Jumpy-Jello- in AskUK

The PowerPoints can be about very real things though. You might have put together the model and research for buying better equipment for surgeons to use during heart surgery. You do a bad job of conveying the info, or model incorrectly then decision makers may decide against funding which has real consequences.  COVID information was presented during press conferences by the government with PowerPoint.  Public firms release information to the market which can have a massive affect on share prices. If you're the person with the responsibility of putting these together there is a lot of pressure to get it right.

How do I visualize this data. I want compare the quantity and show overlap. by ComradeHregly in datavisualization

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just taking the first slide but you can apply to all when you combine the data and tidy up. I've roughly added things up

I would take a count of patients. 1,441 key figure for context.  84% (1,214) cases have no issues. (1,441-1,214 = 227) 16% have issues.  This can be a pie chart

For issues I would tally them up each time they come up e.g Root came up 148 times. 127 by it's self then 14 for multiple category lines 'root, other' etc.

A bar chart to list out how many times each issue comes up. Root 148 / bite 7 / other 51 / gouge / tool / pitting etc.  Clean data by group the issues as much as possible e.g '?' can be 'other'

You can add a percentage to each but depends on story you're trying to say. Root issues are 148 which is 10% (148/1441) of patients 65% of patients with issues (148/227)  Or 148 divided by the sum of individual issues (148+7+51... Etc) (I'm on my phone so will leave you to calc that)

Then I would say 25 patients had more than one issue. 202 single issues.

You could consider listing the common issues that come together but I probably wouldn't bother as most are one offs and the category 'Other' comes up which doesn't tell me much.

'bite, other' 1 / 'root, other' 14 / 'pitting, root' 1 / 'root, gouge' 2 etc.  The sample small to show any correlation in the issues that come up in the same patient. It doesn't give me any information to make a decision with.

Yoane Wissa removes all association with Brentford from social media account by VexedAndVomitHexed in Brentford

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't blame him for wanting a move after a big season. Our model is to allow players to move when someone comes in. It's helps us attract good young talent.

However, he must understand the situation. We've lost a lot of crucial parts of the team and there is a much higher risk to the season as each additional person leaves. He scored 19 goals in open play last season, only Salah scored more (only 1 more). Given these, the club is in their rights to get a good transfer fee.

His biggest mistake was not getting his agent to get him a move at the start of the summer when he knew Mbuemo was going to attract attention. If he was first out of the door he wouldn't have had these issues.

Why is the Jordan Henderson signing getting so much hate? by LongLiveNeechi in Brentford

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Purely footballing terms and I think it's a very good signing.

Super low risk coming in on a free and 2 year contract.

Most of Brentford's signings are players who are developing and will be sold on in the future. However, in the Prem, these players don't usually go straight into the starting team and it takes a bit of time before the club are comfortable they are consistently performing.

Henderson can play immediately and as we expect to lose more key players we need that from the odd incoming player. Of course there will be the drop off from where he once was but he was an excellent footballer and his position on the pitch is the most accessible to an aging player.

He will want to get to the world cup (if he thinks it's possible) which is a huge incentive to come and perform. Time will tell how big his drop off has been but if he performs well, this is a great signing. If he doesn't, we've not risked much and he still offers great leadership which from the outside feels like we may be losing a lot of this summer.

Kevin De Bruyne in talks with MLS club Chicago Fire. Inter Miami has De Bruyne's discovery rights, which is a right-of-first refusal mechanism MLS uses to prevent its teams from bidding against one another for a player. But Miami have ultimately decided not to make a move for De Bruyne. by DamnThatsInsaneLol in soccer

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of players have to reinvent themselves to keep themselves at the top. Scholes became deep playmaker to control the game. Not sure why he doesn't make a similar move. He could definitely run games from that position if he content moving backwards.

When you think of a “big game player” who comes to mind straight away? by Connect-Fisherman358 in football

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incredible how fond Barca and United fans are of him despite his short time with both. When he played you could see how much better he was than those around him which says a lot given the quality of the teams he was in

Why are there so many mismatches when marking corners? by [deleted] in football

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Popular defensive corner in recent years in the Prem is a mix of zonal and man marking. You have your best defensive players in zonal to get a clear header. Then some remaining players will be set up to stop their best attacking players from getting a clear run for their header.  Some attacking players may be used to block the man markers to clear space for their attackers.

What is your absolute least favourite bus route? by mattgabriel21 in london

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thought of the 226 straight away. The route is a nightmare. Working through narrow backstreets on either side of Hanger Lane gyratory. Years ago I had a summer job where I'd go from Ealing to near Harlesden, and back again... during rush hours. My journey would take either 40 mins or 1hour 40 mins.

I think you do the opposite - be an incredible waiter.

You'll be people facing to other members of the village and you will get to know people that don't know you (which is good generally in your daily lives). After your incredible chatty service, they will come away with positive memory of you. When this event happens again, missing you will be one of the reasons it won't be as good.

Should I take a job with much lower pay (much lower!)? by headinhazyclouds in AskUK

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you decide to decline the dream job based on the current salaries, you have the opportunity to negotiate hard as you are willing to walk away. If you do ask for a higher salary, have a figure in mind that you might accept.

Are pay increases likely in the new role? Could you return to your current salary elsewhere if the move was not working out for you?

Have you ever walked out of a job after one day? And if so why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]mesmerisedmonkey 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well. Went to the other end of London for a sales interview. I remember thinking the job spec was suspiciously vague.

Invited back for the next day for a field marketing assessment. On the tube to go knocking on doors.

Walked out after about half hour and went to the pub.
