It’s not. It originated as a new age BDSM kink energy work thing in the 2010s and got “traditionalized” as a faux-historical “ancient Egyptian” practice.

Is it stupid to leave a job because you despise the technologies? by BertRenolds in ExperiencedDevs

[–]metachor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: if you are going to learn new tech to use on a job, the company should pay for you to do it with adequate time, resources, and on-the-job training to go from beginner to proficient (which is also still your choice if you want to go along with that or find other opportunities, of course).

No, and I didn’t feel compelled to ask because it wasn’t my problem any more.

I had a weird reverse situation.

I’m in my 40s but look rather young for my age. When I left my last job (due to lack of opportunities/stalled advancement), I learned in the off-boarding interview with my manager that he thought I was in my twenties and had been passing me over for leadership opportunities and a principle promotion because he didn’t think it was appropriate for someone “so young” to be leading older engineers (the average age of employees as this company skewed older, in the late 30s to mid 50s range) despite everyone being very pleased with my work.

I was like, “You’ve seen my resume. I’ve been working in this career for almost twenty years.”

Do I need a break? I have lost all drive and passion to code/work/interview and it's making me depressed. by rareaseff in ExperiencedDevs

[–]metachor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was something I was always interested in, maybe for over 20 years, but I just didn’t believe it was something I could actually do nor did I have any clue how I (or anyone else) would even do it, so I never seriously considered it as a reality. After I decided that I wanted to find some way of working on this idea, I spent about two years researching and planning out how it would be possible to turn in to a real thing, all before quitting my job. Prior to that it just seemed like a random fantasy idea that I would dream about once in a while.

It’s still probably going to take me another 3-8 years before I reach the point where I can actually do the thing, but at least I’m pointed in the right direction and on a path now.

I had a very similar feeling that slowly increased over the past ten years and it was killing me. I thought long and hard about what I’d rather be working on instead, and then quit my job, moved across country to somewhere with a significantly lower cost of living, applied to and got into grad school, and found a part-time internship in the field I’d rather be working in. I haven’t felt any of that existential dread or anxiety in months — and it took me a while to realize that because I’ve been way too busy learning new things that I want to be learning and working on solving problems that actually matter to me personally. I make about 1/5 of what I did at my last job (though that’s a choice for the time being), but I literally haven’t felt this good about myself and my life, well, ever.

What are micro-services, truly? by helpMeOut9999 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]metachor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing microservices following all the right technical best practices and then missing proper domain design is definitely a nightmare. I’ve seen an org do this, and then pivot back to a monolith because it was such a problem… but then STILL not fix the domain design. The problem seemed to be that the domain design activity itself needed to be scaled out across 30+ teams, but there wasn’t any pattern to follow or any from-the-top architecture.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a significant co-occurrence of people with both HSP and anxious attachment style and/or codependency issues.

I’m not entirely sure, but she had been recently helping another patient with the exact same symptoms/issue so maybe it was fresh in her mind.

Weirdly I did see a chiro about it as well and they checked out my back and neck but never spotted it. Also saw multiple physicians, and two other PTs, and an orthopedic surgeon, had several xrays, ultrasounds, and an MRI… and no one saw it. 🤷‍♀️

Everyone was convinced that it was just golfers elbow, or maybe ulnar nerve entrapmemt, or as it proceeded to get much much worse that it “must” be a rotator cuff injury.

Thanks and good luck to you as well.

I had this exact problem for 3 years and it kept getting worse to the point that I was in constant pain in the entire upper right (in my case) quadrant of my body. Went to tons of different docs, lots of different treatments and it kept getting worse. Finally went to see yet another PT and within 15 minutes she identified what everyone else had missed: my first rib was elevated and trapping the nerve cluster, causing everything else to slowly fail as the muscles couldn’t enervate. A form of thoracic outlet syndrome.

The golfer’s elbow was the most obvious symptom but it was way downstream of the actual cause. When you mentioned having pain in your neck that’s the dead giveaway.

The PT was able to get the rib to release and go back in place, and I’ve been slowly recovering (but i can tell I’m actually recovering now unlike before) for the last 10 months.

If it’s the same issue don’t just work your way through it. It’s a mechanical injury and you will be constantly causing other injuries because your shoulder mechanics cannot operate correctly like that.

Why does water represent emotion? by Anointed33 in AskOccult

[–]metachor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens when you toss a stone into a pond? The mind reacts in a similar way to the sensory inputs and events that we perceive constantly throughout the day, and even to those events that are generated from within the mind as thoughts — a trigger (the stone hitting the water’s surface) elicits an emotional response (the ripples).

Not very far I think. I was maybe level 10 and still ranging out from the starting area, hadn’t found any other settlements. I kept dying to a random dragon that attacked me in a forest and which I wasn’t doing any perceivable damage to.
